Hey man, I humbly seek your learned advice.

Figured I should ask you here instead of other threads since it’s a specific question about a drill.

Now, I have lots of old, wooden shelves which vary in wood quality - not sure of the correct term - that are cluttering up my storeroom. I explained why I went throught that room in the flame free thread. I only picked the ones that are like the long, thin shelves you put at the back of your sofa or bed. The rest I’m intending to throw out cos I don’t even wanna sell them on a 2nd hand platform since that would require setting up an account, a payment account, monitoring the page for buyers and getting deliver guys and all that shit lol.

What I mean is I have some that are made of plywood and some are really fucking hard, antique quality kind of toughness.

I wanna get a drill that can use a hole cutter to cut holes through some of the panels so my cats can climb through. You probably get what I’m saying lol.

The problem is the internet says I need at least an 18V for this purpose since it would require using a hole cutter for holes big enough, which would probably be like 12cm in diameter. What do you think? More? Less? I don’t know lol.

For the old shelves, I’m going to throw them out anyway so I don’t care if I fuck them up initially lol. What do you think? 18V screwdriver? That’s like for serious DIY dudes and experts from what the internet also tells me.

Thanks dude.

The 18V drills/drivers are pretty serious, but since manufacturers are switching to 20V now, you can find them at a pretty reasonable price.

I use one of these-

And this (impact driver)

A whole lot. They have A Ton of torque. Enough to drill these holes

In half inch plate.

So for those holes you’d probably be using something like this-

And the 18V drill would be the right call. Thats a pretty big bit, and requires a fair bit of torque to turn and cut through the material.

In fact, you may want to make sure you have the additional handle attached because if that hole cutter binds it will snap your wrist like Steven Segal .

At least here (i dont know what may be available local to you) the 18V & 20V are really the only things available.

You’re welcome!

Let me know how it goes or if you run into any snags along the way.

My wife keeps hinting (telling me directly) that she’d like a cat tree built for ours. Im going to have to figure something out.

Alright, I went to set up that desk 5min after our previous exchange.

I’ve just FINISHED. 4 FUCK HOURS lol.

And you know what? I have a cat tree problem of my own as in I have enough cat trees.

But I don’t see the point in them unless they are just for lazing around. (Trust me, I am currently in charge of 8, yes, EIGHT cats, 4 of which are mine. 2 are my parents’. 2 are ex-strays that like to go in and out of their house and they’re cool with the 2 indoor ones.)

So, IME, which also gives me the chance to ask your advice for just one more thing:

  1. If your cats are fully grown, they have no use for one unless it’s FUCKING TALL - like ceiling height - and something that’s both a “challenge” and requires physical exertion. Like I saw just on really thing, vertical one on YouTube that was at least 7ft high and wrapped in sisal and a bunch of cats loved climbing it.

  2. Don’t get me wrong. Cats like cat trees. For lazing around like bums. And I’ll even tell you an ingenious way of getting rid of all the fur if it’s one with furry material. However, if I had the skills to do stuff like “floating shelves” that actually lead somewhere like a box at the corner right below the ceiling, I’d go with that without any consideration.

  3. I have 4 cat trees, one that goes up to near the ceiling but there’s no “path” to it. They only use them for:

  • Looking out the window or just being bums.

  • Evading another fucker. But then, prior to what I wrote in the flame free thread, there was nowhere to go from there but they’re lucky the fucker who does the chasing is near obese so the fucker doesn’t even bother climbing.

(This, BTW, isn’t “aggression” being displayed. I know real aggression when I see it. It’s “stalking” behavior and I’m told this means the cat is just really bored without any physical/mental stimulation. It’s the "hunting instincts kind of thing. It’s like one of those automatic rolling balls that stop for a couple secs and start moving when touched. If the cat being chased had not started running, the fucker would have left him alone.)

So here’s the interesting (and fucking frustrating) part.

ALL my cats have one favorite toy. That’s a fucking OLD MATTRESS I was going to throw out but they liked it so much I just kept it in one of the rooms and it’s placed adjacent to an old, long sofa. So the rush begins from outside the room, onto the top of length of the sofa to climbing the fucking mattress lol.

My parents heard about this and did the same thing.

No cat can resist this lol.

Currently I’m trying to find an alternative to the mattress but I have no ideas. U have any?

But, anyway, it’s not that important. I can just buy a new one since the only thing I don’t like is that mattresses are FUCKING MOLD AND BACTERIA TRAPS and it’s around 82% humidity where I live unless I turn on the aircon.

So, if I were you, I’d go for:

  1. Long, floating shelves on the wall that lead somewhere they can perch.
  2. One of those “ceiling walks”:

Man, this is would be something I’d get a pro to do if the wife doesn’t give me shit about making the house look bad lol.

You wanna see how much fuckers from China charge for 4 fucking steps?

That’s 80USD.

I’m thinking of something built into a corner that goes up to the ceiling with a couple of shelves coming out in each direction.

With enough space to put some books on so that they have something to knock on our heads.

This is Derpy the house panthers favorite spot.

Perched on the windowsill to watch the birds.

And my other cat Tabby is mixed.

She has always liked going up.

But to get them to prefer one spot like their scratching post or cat bed I used cat nip. I rub it into the fabric and carpet so that they keep coming back to it to get stoned.

Congrats on the assembly too! 4 hrs. Really isn’t bad, especially if its solid, done, never to be messed with again.

Haha oh man, one of mine would climb what that thing that’s holding the curtains all the time so my wife got rid of them.

I wouldn’t even get a cat tree for the home if you let them out. Just some comfy beds on whatever you have beside the windows.

Btw, try letting your cats watch this. I went and bought a cheap but bigass TV for one of the rooms these fellows hang out in because they love some of these videos:

CAT GAMES - STRING STRING THING (FOR CATS ONLY) - YouTube

This one drives them crazy.

I wanted to touch on this for a moment.

I do this goofy thing with my cats that I did myself when I was like 2 & 3 years old. I used to play with matchboxes (the little cars) in the bath tub because it has smooth curves and steep sides. It was great.

So, for my cats, I get the little jingle balls and get them all excited bapping it around. Then, put them into the empty bath tub and give the ball a zing, and Viola! Happy cats getting lots of play time with their jingle ball in the tub.

Big Derpy even trained the kittens we have now to do it himself, because he runs around the house with the ball then drops it in the tub to play when he wants to.

Its pretty cool except for when he wants to play at 3:00 am.
