This was a cool interview. Watched it all. I wonder two things: was it really the skulls that injured him, or doing the skulls with over 300 lbs (didn’t he say something insane like 385 for 3)? The second thing is, I wonder if he’d have as many world records without having done those insanely heavy skulls?
Just thinking aloud. He mentioned a ridiculous amount of injuries and surgeries and I just wonder if that’s part of being the best, especially when PLing was in its infancy.
Just a follow up, I bugged the owner of the gym I go to into buying those cannonball pullup things you hang from a pullup bar to do pull-ups. I thought I’d try my luck after seeing Brian Alshrue doing skullcrushers with these attached to chains.
So I gave it a go. Neutral grip, slight incline… got a great pump (sets of 15) and not even a hint of elbow issues, felt good if anything.
Highly recommended - just thinking about this, you could just hold onto the chains, no cannonballs required.
If cannonballs are available for use in any exercise they should be included both for the anabolic value ( 70% higher) and the myriad other intangibles that exercising with cannonballs offers.
