Well, I learned two very important things this weekend. First, I need to do more work on my triceps, and second, I really don’t look good in a singlet.
The bench only meet went well. I learned a great deal that will help me with my training and my next competition.
I weighed in at 238lb. This is the heaviest I have been while at a decent bodyfat % (probably 15-16%). The meet had 19 lifters, but I was the only one competiting in the 242 RAW division. So, all I had to do was complete a lift and I got first place.
I decided to open at 245 since this was a weight I had done in the gym for 3 reps. It might have been a little high, but I felt confident I could get it. On my first attempt, I had a guy from the meet help me with the lift-off. BIG MISTAKE… I got the lift but it was probably harder than it needed to be.
My next lift was going to be at 255. On my second attempt, I got a friend to do the lift-off and things went much better. I lowered the weight well and waited for the press command. When I started the press, I could feel my triceps just not strong enough to push the weight. I missed the second and third attempt for the same reason, weak triceps.
In the gym, because I don’t work with the pause at the bottom, I can power the weight through my weak point. With a pause, my arms just have to be stronger and ready to power the weight through to lock-out. My longer arms make it even harder to move the weight through my sticking point.
Overall, I was happy with the meet. I got my first lift in despite a poor lift-off and I learned what I need to work on, stronger triceps.
It was really good to get used to the commands. I saw a number of lifters miss lifts because they didn’t wait for the rack command. I also realized the importance of training everyday with a strong mental focus. Training really needs to be consistent every rep so that when you compete your instincts kick in.
I have four weeks to get ready for the November meet. My goal will be to get more confidence with my squat opener, get stronger through the mid point of the bench, and continue to improve on my DL technique. Oh, I almost forgot, get a new singlet…
