Skiing or Snowboarding?

I ski and board. Between the two I think boarding is more fun. Skiing is easier to learn and safer. If you are only going to be going once or twice a year it will be easier to have a good time if you are skiing. Your first two days snowboarding will be spent getting up over and over.

Someone above said snowboarding is no good on tree runs. Not true at all. There’s nothing better on a board than ripping through a tree run with virgin powder. I agree moguls are easier on skies (not for me). I see good skiers whipping down mogul runs better than I think I would ever be capable of on a board. I practice mogul runs a lot because I think they are the best way to improve your skills.

On good snow days I hit the trees. On regular days I practice carving on groomed runs trying to hold my edge with no slipping or shimmying and I practice mogul runs trying to be as fast and smooth as I can. I try to hit a rhythm and hold it under control as long as I can.

I’ve been told that snowboarding is more difficult to learn but skiing is more difficult to master. Thoughts?

I would like to highlight this point. I have seen many a great powder day get ruined by a bunch of jackasses on snowboards. And it’s not limited to the beginners either.
If you do decide to snowboard, learn how to carve properly. None of that sliding down the hill face forward bullcrap.
Again, and quoted for significance.

Also, I’d avoid the advanced hills for quite some time. I see very unexperienced people go on them early in the boarding/skiing career and they’re very dangerous.

Also, don’t bother with the bunny hills. Learning curve of the row tow < learning on the intermediate hill.
Quoted for clarification.

This is done by knuckle dragging dimwits, not snowboarders. Snowboarders like powder, ripping through trees, pounding through bumps and everything else a mountain has to offer, even if it requires a hike.

Although elusive, You may find snowboarders on any of the previously mentioned terrain having a blast. The knuckle dragging dimwits on the other hand, can only be found either on their way to the terrain park, where the sit around “stylin”, or coming from the terrain park going toward the lodge. The reason for them is simple. They can’t ride. You may find them trying to do little tail hops or ollie over a cup of cocoa, but that is about as far as they ever get, and even with that, manage to make a nuisance of themselves.

It’s an honest mistake many people make. Even some of the knuckle dragging dimwits mistake themselves for snowboarders, so I can understand how others would too. I had to point this out to my niece last year when I taught her. Within a couple of hours, she was carving and navigating a slope at will. After about six she even caught a little air at the park. It brought a little tear to my eye when she met me at the bottom of the slope and said “I would have been down a lot quicker, but there was a bunch of assholes sitting in the middle of the jumps.”.

Use a stiff board, bevel your edges at a 2 degree angle toward the base, and when you initiate your turn- lift and pivot like you want to leave the ground and set your edge like like you are stomping a pop can.

They are about the same difficulty to learn. The problem is learning one then trying to learn the other. I really enjoy skiing. The thing that sucks about snowboards is the gigantic blind spot and getting on lifts. Ski boots blow chunks for walking in. Hope this post is helpful.

I skied for years but am now a die hard boarder, have been for the last 15 and at 45 it is not a fashion statement nor do I hang out in the terrain park. We free ride and there are few places a skier can get to that I cant. That being said one is no better than the other, they each have their assholes and retards. So live and let live.

P.S. I have seen more than my fair share of 2plankerwankers fucking up the powder.

I agree. Skiing is more technical. Two skis instead of one board. Each ski is less stable in that one foot is in the middle of each. Where as with boarding two feet are attached to one board for much more control. Skiing also have the element of poles to learn how to utilize effectively.

QFT

Since I’m lucky enough to live practically in the middle of Colorado ski country, I can tell you that the really good skiers and boarders I’ve known, and not the posers, respect each other. In fact, most of the skilled people do, or have done, both just for the challenge of learning something new.

There are days when I board and days when I ski (tele lately).

I recommend picking whichever your friends are most into since it’s easier to ski with skiers and board with boarders.

Props to you for tele skiing. Folks don’t really do that anymore. I had to learn when I was in the Navy during mountain/cold weather training and sucked at it.

i bet you wear those one piece fluro spider suits!! just like the old man that cleaned me up and ended me season with a MCL tear… damn skiers take the whole slope to do one turn… i hate you!!
