Size Matters

I’m going to add box pulls in somewhere. I used to do them when I pulled conventional and loved them.

big pulls off boxes- how high where they?

Front squats after pulling is so torturous

are you using straps on your front squats?
and can I say I like your bangs
The boxes are 9"; just at/below my knees. They are a killer on the back at that weight/volume.

I don’t use straps on my front squats. That’s all flexible wrist.

Thanks for the hair compliment. It’s driving me nuts at the moment. I can’t get in for a cut until Christmas eve.

I used to love them because they were an ego lift. Now that they’re actually scheduled, fairly weighty with a bit of volume, I’m finding them very draining.

I’ve never done box pulls. they look like a great way to help trouble spots on dl’s…man…do you have any suggestions of wt’s to use to start with? compared to max etc?
They are a good way to hit trouble spots particularly if you have problems locking out just like deficits work problems off the floor.

The weight to start with would depend on the person and the height of the box. My raw max so far is 295 and I pulled 380 with no belt for multiple triples just below the knee. Just experiment a bit with it.

285-2x3 suit bottoms/belt/loose knee wraps

reverse band bench - skinny black bands
bar-10

155-10
175-10

push ups - 27
narrow push ups -10 ugh

good box pulls, I’ve always been told not to do sumo rack/box pulls, only conventional because no carry over. You still have a ways to pull due to long limbs, are you finding there is some carryover?

I honestly don’t know if I get any carryover from box/rack pulls. I already have a pretty strong lock out.

I’m doing them right now for a couple of reasons: 1) It really smokes by back and abs like just about nothing else, 2) they’re making me focus on pushing up with my hips rather than using my back as much ie popping up with my hips as opposed to bending over to pick it up.

The back thing might not make much sense but just staying erect with that amount of weight is a big amount of core work for me. I don’t know if conventional would do anything either other than get me bending over to pull which I’m trying to train myself out of doing.

All to say, it’s too early to tell. This entire cycle is a new experiment for me.

295 deadlift without a belt is pretty hardcore.
keep killing it in here J.

This is why I never do rack pulls. If I get the pull to my knees, I have never not locked it out. I always fail on (or mere inches above) the floor.

The other weird thing is that the times I’ve done rack pulls, I find that I can only initiate the pull with my back. Cannot seem to do it any other way.

Your weights are so impressive already. And you must have at least six training weeks left before your meet, eh?

Saturday December 10

Deadlift - suit bottoms
135-5
225-3
275-1
295-1
All of the above were no belt and hook grip.
310-5x2
Below is set 4 I think

Box squats
135-3
225-3
275-3x2
225-2x3

These felt heavy and hard today. Last week I did 5 triples at 275. There was no way today.

CG Incline Bench
75-4x6

DB swings
30-20
52-2x20

I got a french manicure today for the first time ever. Manicures aren’t really my thing but it looks lovely and they put a special laquer on that made it survice deadlifts quite nicely.

When my daughter and I were getting our nails done, she said I had a look on my face when they were cutting my cuticles like I do when she’s driving; kind of curled up and stressed out. Turns out I hate having my cuticles cut back.

We also made all our Christmas Chocolate today: White Chocolate almond bark, milk chocolate with caramels and cashews, dark chocolate with ground up candy canes and, just for me, dark chocolate with cinnamon and dried chili peppers - delicious.

gourmet!! oh la la!

Are you using hook grip to grow more hair on your chest or what? And no belt! Egads.

Can you send me some chocolate?

Thats one badass belt Julie. Looks like you took it from a Titan.

Actually, I ripped it off a giant inzer?

Monday December 12

Bench
bar-10
65-54
95-3
115-1
135-2 shirt (36 fury)
160-0,0
155-0
145-1,1,2
150-1
95-2x7 no shirt
This really sucked. I felt weak as crap. I was supposed to be hitting 160 today but it was no go. BB also had a weak bench day. I’m not sure how much the weight and volume of this portion of the cycle is grinding us down. This is the last week in this phase and then it’s a deload.

Box pulls
225-3
315-1 - hook grip whee
365-2
405-2,2,1,2,2 no belt

I’m wondering, if this stuff in particular is affecting my bench. I can certainly feel all this in my back; erectors mostly and traps.

Reverse hypers against black band
15, 15, 20

Low rows against blue band
3x25

My mouth is watering, IVe never been a chocolate eater, but lately its yummy.

The hook grip is totally to grow more hair on my chest. It get’s cold training in the garage in winter.

I’m actually doing it to see how heavy I can pull with it. I still get a left lean when I get heavy/tired on the side with my supinated hand and was thinking that might even things out a bit. I think it will take quite a bit of work. I’ve been talking to a couple of guys who use it in competition. One of our open guys uses it pulling sumo which was more interesting to me because of where your fingers hit when you lock out.

I actually meant Titans as in the big ass god like cratures of greek legends.

BUt when i posted it I thought “Wait, isn’t there a Titan brand… oh well,”

Some training days are just like that. They always leave a bad taste in my mouth even though I know they are inevitable at times.

You’ll compete in the Katana, right?

Yes I’ll be competing in the Katana. I’ve just adopted the old fury as a loose training shirts for (supposedly) lighter weights and higher volume.
