Simo - The Red Shoe Diaries Part 2.0

Awesome night in London catching up with 3 old school friends. We all turn 50 this year and have known each other since we were 11. Funny how when you get back together you slip back into the same jokes and stories from years ago. Feels so natural and comfortable. Very lucky to have such good mates.

Gym again this morning with dad. Did a body attack cardio class. Lots of dancing around to music. My hip flexors and calves were fked. Lots of fun though and the trainer is a nice lady with heaps of energy. Love how my dad does these classes and has such a good community. Very fun and really good to share it with dad. We laughed a lot at my uncoordinated lump trying to keep up.

Enjoying myself In Spain, lots of good food and not a lot of training, just like a proper holiday should be. I’ll update more when I am back next week. Hope you are all training hard.

I’m Back.

Flew back from Spain to London on Thursday and then back to the airport on Friday morning to start the log flight back to Melbourne. Flew with Malaysia airways via Kuala Lumpur. The first flight was on time but unfortunately the second had a bit f a delay. Was only supposed to have a 2 hour layover in KL but it ended up being 9 hours. Got back into Melbourne at 2am, home and in bed by 3 am. Back to work today (it’s Monday here) which was a bit of a shock to the system.

Was so good to get home and great to see the wife and kids on Sunday when I woke up. That is the longest time I have been away from them and I missed them a lot by the end of the trip.

Going to force myself back into the gym tonight. I did a little training whilst I was away but nothing to heavy. I fully expect to be sore all this week.

It was a good break and great to catch up with my family and friends, but I am very happy to be back at home.

Monday 8 July - week 1

Axle squat
Bar x 10
60 x 5
80 x 3
100 x 3
120 x 5 x 3 sets (264 lbs )
These felt nice and easy. The thicker bar is very nice on the shoulders

Hack squat
20 x 10 x 3 sets
Narrow feet, full depth, no lock out,
Straight back down, quad focused. Weight is 1 plate per side. Short rest

Leg curl
32 x 12 x 3 sets - short rest, these were light but hammies were cramping a little by the end. Haven’t done these for ages so they are going to hurt.

Db bench
40 x 6 x 4 sets
Easy presses.

Db supported row
35 x 10 x 3 sets
Weight was a little heavy for week 1, still got the reps but it was hard work.

Very nice first session back. The few sessions I did on holiday will deff help to reduce the doms but I still rekon I’ll be sore. Especially in the legs.

I have got my eye on another local strongman comp coming up in later September. That’s assuming it doesn’t get cancelled like @T3hPwnisher one was.

They have a masters division so I can compete with the old boys and for master the weight class is U100KG so I don’t have to worry about any dieting.

The events for this are:

  1. Rising bar car deadlift, 60 second time cap

  2. 90 seconds to complete 10m farmers run, into a 10m duck walk, into powerstairs

  3. Overhead medley- 90 seconds to complete one rep on each implement, axle, log, sandbag over shoulder In remaining time you will choose one to complete max reps.
    you can swap out implements.

  4. Sandbag toss over bar
    1m for women
    1.2m for men
sandbag series increasing weight to be thrown over bar in the quickest time.

Going to change some movements in my training to prepare for this.

Deadlift will change to trap bar or frame deadlift.
Tuesdays movement session will be farmers or sandbag over shoulder (alternating each week)
Pressing will be Axle clean and press
Strongman Saturdays will be log press or sandbag cleans

Not sure what to do for duck walk or power stairs, I don’t think my gym has a duck walk implement - Probably just wing it or Happy to take advice of anyone has any ideas @Koestrizer @T3hPwnisher @DoubleDuce

Wednesday 10 July - week 1

Deadlift - trap bar 33kg bar
Bar x 10
73 x 5
113 x 3
133 x 3
143 x 10 x 3 sets
These were hard work on the lungs

Axle clean n press
60 x 5 x 2 sets
60 x 10
Felt smooth so went for 10 on the last set . Still had some in the tank.

Axle bent over row
60 x 10 x 3 sets

Pull ups
BW - 8 x 3 sets

Hammer curls
15 x 12 x 3 sets

That was a nice session. My legs were pretty sore from Mondays squats but they didn’t affect the pulls . The frame/ trap bar felt ok. A little different to a bar but won’t take long to get used to it. Axle overhead felt very good. Nice easy reps.

Have you considered roughing up a T handle like this and loading with plates?

Ive seen other versions too. You buy all those sort of gal pipe fittings at bunnings.
A T join, two short sections, an adapter to go up a size, a long section and a bottom flange connector and youre done.

Thanks Sven, funny but on this holiday for maybe the first time ever I caught a glimpse of my reflection and actually thought, fk me I am a unit right now. :joy:

Thanks for the tips mate. I will have a good look at my gym as there are tons of handles in there I don’t use. I am sure I can find a loading pin and a straight handle.

Contemplating having a gander at competing but never done it before. As I train at home I’ve not got or ever had access to some of the equipment I’ve seen listed when I’ve looked at some of the events. What would you recommend for someone considering having a go?

That t-handle idea that’s been pitched has been my go to solution. The thing to account for is how they’re going to load you up. I did a competition that used 45lb plates, which meant that my plan of swinging the weight up was completely not viable compared to when I use 25lb plates to load.

Excited to follow along once more, mate! Looks like a good comp.
I am currently also training for power stairs in a bit of a diy manner, haha. Without any kind of handle, I would probably do some high rep close stance sumo deadlift with doh grip. Or just wing it alltogether

@T3hPwnisher @Koestrizer Thanks guys

Had a quick look last night and we do have a number of different loading pins in the gym which I can just attached a straight handle to. This will swing about a little but will still allow me to practice moving with weight between my legs.

I was also thinking that maybe a heavy kettle bell would work, we have some that are 92kg (200 lbs). Am thinking repping this onto a squat box will be kinda like power stairs.

I would just day do it. I did my first one last year and had almost none of the implements to train on. It had Yoke - I had never done one, it had Stones - I had never lifted one, it had viking press - I had never touched one. It also had deadlift, farmers and sandbags all of which I has used before.

Just get yourself strong and then have a go. You will learn a lot, meet some great people and likely it will give you greater motivation to do another one.

Some gyms will also have open days or strongman Saturdays where you can try out equipment before the comp.

Lots of people sat they are waiting to get to a certain strength before competing but I think that is the wrong way to go.

Doms from yesterdays deadlift session is real. Upper back and traps are tight as …

Getting some pain in my right forearm which is a little concerning. Feels a lot like the tendinitis (tennis elbow) I had in my left arm last year. Going to be doing a fair bit of pulling for training for the strongman comp and need grip to be good. Will ice a bit tonight, do some stretching and keep an eye on it. Worst case I can use straps in training to minimize any impact and just deal with the pain.
