This looks like it’s about to have a very good pay off for you with deadlifts from the floor, assuming you keep most of those reps next week. What’s your rep PR at 190kg?
4 reps dead stop
You are basically correct. Pulling from a different height changes the focus of the movement. Most people use block pulls to either work on a weak part of the lift, or to overhead a strong part of the movement and move bigger weights.
This 8 week training block has had me start with 7 mats (about 7 inches) and each week remove a mat. The idea is that the higher pulls are a little easier. As the height reduces each week it gets more difficult but the aim is to try and keep hitting the same reps each week.
So the weight and reps stay the same but the distance that you are moving the weight increases?
Sorry that you get stuck fielding my questions. But you are always so kind about answering. ![]()
Yes that’s exactly it, it’s just another progression model, rather than increase reps or weight each week, you are increasing the distance you are moving the weight.
Kazmaier was an animal.
There’s a vid of Kaz in the late 80s doing a demo in a gym, most impressive was he cleaned a pair of 150# bells and did super fast pressing and his traps were just pumped moving them as they filmed from the back side. Really showed how traps engage in that! Yeah, he just cleaned them bells, absolute horsepower!
Those just keep looking awesome. Don’t sweat that attempt for a 10th: it took me a LONG time to build the ability to get more pulls after the first one. I saw on the 6th the bar drifted away from you and you still recovered well, and some of those hitches had opportunities to become Poundstone hitches. All that to say: you’re even stronger than the reps show on this, and have the chance to do some more damage.
I am definitely starting to change the way my body / mind reacts to the pulls being slow and hard. I would have stopped a few reps earlier if I had tried this from this height 6 weeks ago.
You got more than 4 from the floor at 190 now, that is for sure.
Just how we like it.
Tuesday 16 Dec week 7.
Push press (from rack)
40’x 3
60 x 3
70 x 2
80 x 1
85 x 1
90 x 2
90 x 1
90 x 1
90 x 0. Total Fkn rubbish. It’s like all the practice has done nothing.
60 x 15 - had a few left but upper back was cramping
That’s all I had time for today. This was Friday’s session that I missed last week. Not really in a good headspace right now.
Leaving those here even though I am not happy with it. Don’t want you thinking I only show the good stuff
I’m currently reading Never Let Go. Last night’s chapter was about bad workouts. (Not that this was a bad workout). Not sure if you’ve read it, but he talks about how nothing in life gets better and better every single time. “Even sex can have highs and lows”. I told you all of that to tell you this.
It might not have been there today, but that doesn’t mean it’s not there.
I’m glad for this. It’s nice to know that even the strongmen have days that they aren’t thrilled with. So that kind of makes me one of you.
Don’t forget that you inspire an odd little American woman. Even with a failed lift. Strong work today.
Go easy on yourself, as you would on any of us. It looked like proper hard work to me, so you hit that goal at least.

A Very good book, Beth. I’ve read that one a couple of times.
I’m not very far but I am enjoying it so far. It’s made me laugh out loud multiple times.
I’m still waiting for my first “good stuff” to happen so I can capture it on video and post it. I think I’m going to need to post myself walking around the neighborhood, which I execute pretty expertly.
Nice progress on the push press!
That’s a mad overhead, dutifully respectful here. Question, who taught you how to push press and have you always done it that way?,do u think it adds compared to a strict press or are they about the same in terms of poundage?
Kinda just worked out the push press from watching vids and people giving me advice. I do get a bit out of the press but not as much as I would like.
