Thanks mate. The 165 felt ok and I really thought another 10 or more was there. I think maybe I didn’t rest enough between the two. It’s all good. After 15 weeks of deficit I’ve lost a heap of fat and maintained most of my muscle and strength. That’s not to bad for middle aged dad of three who sits on his arse all week.
Absolutely, my strength is noticeably better when I’m training in a surplus. I’d be quite happy with where you’re sitting right now.
That’s not bad for a youngster who is relatively new to training, that’s very impressive for a middle aged dad of three who sits on his arse all week!
Woke at 81.4kg - feeling a little dehydrated. Body is sore, nothing is out of place I just know I worked hard yesterday. Lats and triceps have decent DOMS already !!
Sleepy said it, a full mock meet, will take its toll.
You’ve not had a proper deload, this was supposed to be your deload week, so you’re coming in to this fatigued from that intensity block.
You hadn’t worked in the 1 rep range for a long time.
I would say that you could go to Bali and really enjoy yourself and the family.
130 kg squat Quality
the DL looked good and smooth.
Bench that was a great fight man, took a lot out of you. Awesome.
Thanks @mortdk on reflection it wasn’t a bad result from 15 weeks of deficit and only doing hypertrophy blocks. Here’s hoping with some more strength focused training I’ll hit something bigger later this year.
Did my good deed for the week today. Was getting out of the car at the supermarket and saw someone bad dropped their phone on the ground. Checked the phone and at wasn’t locked, so I checked the calling and called the most recent repeat person called. Turns out it was the ladies son. I told him a where I was and waiting a few mins for him to drive out and collect the phone. He figured his mum was still shopping as he could see her car in the car park, so he went in to find her and give it back.
Last day of work tomorrow then flying off to Bali to meet up with my mum and dad. Really looking forward to a break, some sun, sand and good food and drink.
Enjoy Bali! Dont forget pictures for us common folk!
Sounds fantastic. We have just over three weeks until our trip. Hope you have a blast Simo!
Yeah enjoy Bali Mate, have a good one.
Enjoy mate, off to the warmth as it finally cools down here hey.
That’s it mate, get away from the cold. We usually do something in July to break up winter but going earlier this year because Mum and dad are over.
Please change log title to dangerous daddy ![]()
Sounds a bit dodge mate !! ![]()
Sitting in the airport waiting to board and catching up on everyone’s logs. It looks like there are lots of injured athletes on t nation right now. @losthog , @guineapig , @strongmanvinny2, @flipcollar, @Frank_C @MarkKO to name just a few.
So it leaves me pondering what causes this. Is it pushing too hard ? Is it not recovering enough, Is it just a fact off life or a sign of age or bad luck.
I have been back in the gym 3 years since I gave up running (after a bad calf tear injury !!). In that time I have only trained 2 times a week, because that’s what fits with my life right now. I spent the first year progressing very slowly (literally starting with an empty bar and adding weight every week). But I have pushed harder over the last 2 years. I’m still not as strong as I want or even as strong as I used to be. My training is repetitive, with very slow progression and very little time pushing maxes or amrap.
But this has kept me injury free and able to keep going week to week.
I genuinely feel for all of you that have injuries and can’t do the thing you love.
I will be sending healing vibes to all of you, as I relax and recover over the next two weeks. I hope you all get back to full fitness soon.
At least three of us listed compete regularly. I think that adds a dimension to training in respect of how we deal with niggles and loading. If you have a small issue and you’re in the tail end of a peak there isn’t a whole lot you can do beyond be careful and hope. You have to perform at a specific time and to be ready to do that you have to do specific things at specific loads. Add to that carrying about as much fatigue as you ever do and your risk of getting injured increases.
If you do things right, and execute your technique correctly along with doing everything you can to recover and manage that fatigue you have a decent chance of getting through unscathed; but the risk of getting injured is still a lot higher than if you aren’t working on a strict schedule and can simply back off until you’re recovered.
Totally agree Mark. Competing definitely adds another dimension, both in terms of general training fatigue and how hard you push your body. I remember when I ran after telling me there are three types of runner, 1. Those injured, 2. Those recovering from an injury and 3. Those about to get injured.
I guess people who lift weights are the same.
All the above lol.
I’m still training…![]()
Just not as heavy or with barbells for deadlift, OHP, or bench. Just working on my back and cutting weight. One thing I’ve learned through this is when you make up your mind to cut, drop back on the weights and focus on the cut. Strength training and eating go hand in hand.
If it makes you feel better I’ve heard the amount of work to maintain gains is less than the amount to make gains. Keep all the gains but get sexy as
Interesting discussion opener.
I have to agree with @MarkKO on the point of competition and risk taking.
Some injuries just occur. Some injuries happen because of bad luck and some happen out of stupidity. Sometimes you are executing lifts wrong or you have underlying issues that cause you to injure yourself in the gym even though it wasn’t something you did wrong.
Like common back pain doesn’t have a definite cause. It doesn’t have to be back technique amongst lifters (see Stefi Cohen’s instagram posts on the topic for reference).
When I joined Tnation I was reading about @T3hPwnisher and how he said that he never tries to find out the reason for an injury. I was baffled at the time. I thought he was kind of mad. Today I understand him a lot better.
My opinion may change once I pick up more debiliating injuries but that’s a take on it
