Sick With a Cold: What Should I Eat?

It’s not too serious. I’m just drowsy, have a runny nose, a mild headache, and difficulty staying asleep. No change in appetite. I’m on my 2nd week of GOMAD and eat 4500 calories per day. Should I skip a workout and change up my diet (drop the milk?) to recover quicker or just grind through the illness?

Drink orange juice for the vitamin C and my opinion is to let your body recover without working out for a day. But it really depends on how bad you feel… if you can still get in and get a good workout, go for it. Don’t let it get worse, though. If you feel worse and worse give it a few days off.

Why change your diet just because you’re sick. I can see taking extra zinc, but not much else. Megadosing on vit C has not been shown to help or prevent any cold. And why would you drop dairy? If it causes you to produce excess mucus then you are probably allergic anyways, so you should already not be eating it. Take some pumpkin seeds for the zinc and some citrus for the vitamin C. You don’t have to go overkill.

Oh, yeah and lay off the working out. It’s been shown to worsen colds and MPS (muscle protein synthesis) is just about impossible because your body is doing more important things. Hot tub, a little cardio and stretching/foam rolling are a good idea if you’re dying to get into the gym.

So now milk negatively impacts recovery?? Fucking devil juice that milk is turning out to be.

Theirs actually a great article here On T-Nation for training while sick. Give it a read and you be the judge

“Sick? Go Train”

as far as your eating habits go…pick up some zinc (gluconate kind) or better yet “Zinc lozenges.”
