Great job. Don’t you find that sometimes when you go to the gym, you get pounded in the ass something good?

fixed…what?

I should add that I have been watching your log and you have inspired me to switch to sumo deads. Plus you are a good Eastern boy that likes felling trees, burning brush and long walks on the beach. Like I said…inspirational.

Anyway, the switch was for a couple of reasons…conventional deads were tough on my lower back and my quad development is not what I would like. Sumo seems to be a fix for both.

My sumo is 100lbs off my conventional but I’m getting the form down and it is starting to feel more natural.

Thanks man! Yeah, sumos have been great for progression and recovery-- much easier on my back for sure, plus I can take better advantage of my hugantic ass.

Nova Scotia, eh? Your just a short ride away on the ‘The Cat’! You ever see that thing? Pretty awesome ship.

Yeah, I love me chainsaw. Cutting wood and living in the northeast go hand in hand, unless your a crunchy-assed tree hugger that thinks that toilet paper just appears out thin air (if they use toilet paper at all…). 8^O

The Cat is cool but I haven’t been on it. I usually drive through New Brunswick when I go to your fine state.

With sumos being primarily a leg movement, I’m trying to work through where to put them in the rotation. Traditional deads went on back day but I’m going to put sumos on leg day. Not sure if I will squat and sumo on the same day, use either squat or sumo, or do both but switch which exercise I do first. Dunno.

Question for you SD. You mentioned that once a week was enough for you on squats and DLs. Does that mean you do either squats or DLs once per week? Not squats one day and DLs another day in the same week?

Reason I ask is that my back never seems to fully recover. I am wary over going to legs once every 7 days because that seems to be the cusp for me with reference to DOMS. If I go 6 days between, I may or may not get it. On upper body there seems to be enough crossover in workouts that it wards it off. Not so with legs.[/quote]

LS- I was alternating squats and deads every other week on leg day. I changed up my split to ‘quads’ and ‘hams’, so squat/legs and DL/legs (posterior) once a week. I’ve been trying to stick with:

Bench
Deadlift
Arms (or cardio or off)
Back
Shoulders
Squats
Off

Or, something like that. My only rule is no back the day before squats and keep squats/deads as far apart as I can. I just throw in a day off whenever I think I need it (usually after DL day). I think i could get away with squat and DL on the same day, but only in ‘maintenance’ or weightloss mode. I don’t think I could generate the intensity to progress with them on the same day.

Was feeling kinda bad about maybe going a little too far with the ‘bulk’.

Not that I’m obese, but sometimes that little voice kinda says “Hey man, it’s almost Summer-- beach days coming up…”.

Who are you kidding? You live in Maine! I’ve been there and I’ve been in the water. In late August. So … you’re worried you’ll look bulky on the beach in your summer parka?

BWAH!

Hey! We have 3, sometimes 4 days where it’s hot enough to take your shirt off and dive into the water (for 5 seconds before hypothermia sets in)!!

I try to look nice in my summer flannel

Good question. I always squatted first when I did them on the same day.

Yes, but summer flannel is just Madras plaid on vacation!

Cappy

Cappy… too damn funny! Play nice!

Steely, training looking good! I am gonna try some sumos I think, after this comp. Don’t wanna screw around with things and risk injury until after.

BBBBBBBench (and other chest/tri stuff)

Cycle 2, Week 2 (1 week behind other lifts), 3x3

w/u: Barx10, 135x8

185x3
210x3
230x7
Couldn’t arch because of stiff hip/back from squats

Inc. DB Press:
60x12
80x8
100x4, x5, x6, x5

Inc. Tate Press:
35x10
45x10
50x8
55x5

DB Lat Raise:
25x20
30x20
35x16

Dip: BW-25x6 (shoulder felt just OK)

Right Glutes/hip/lower-back very stiff/inflamed from yesterday’s squat session. Nothing debilitating, but uncomfortable until it relaxes. Such is life with a gimpy back and heavy squats.

I couldn’t get any kind of real arch for benching tonight because of it, but managed to get the weight up some.

Video from Sunday’s squats:

Am I hitting depth on these? I thought I was getting good depth, but after watching, I’m not sure. Thoughts?

I’d say you are just breaking parallel, Steely. But that’s just my inexperienced eye…

lookin’ strong on 'em anyway!

You are right at depth according to the piece of paper I put across my screen at your knee level as the video ran.

I’m nothing if not scientific…

Reps #1 and #2… right on the borderline it looks like (IMHO)… #'s 3-4-5 definitely broke parallel. Good job, and nice form! I am ot the authority though… go to “ask Meat” forum and post the vid… he will critique it for ya. There are a few guys that are very experienced (Big Bumpy, PeteS etc.) and will give you their honest opinion and advice.

PM Cardio - Rec. Bike, 25 minutes, L12

depth looked good to me bro.

Dog, DCA, Bunny, Meat-- thanks for the eyes on. I can never tell if my fat ass gets to grass or not-- it sure feels like it in the squat. I usually go until I feel ready to rebound, like letting the weight push me into the hole, but the video always plays tricks on my eyes.

On another note, FASTING for AM bloodwork SUUUUUUUUUUUCKKSSSS!!!

As usual SD, nice work. The squats looked strong!

It could be worse. You could be drinking 5 jillion glasses of water, taking a jiggly train ride to a doctor’s so some tech can press your bladder with a wand while you try not to piss yourself. I miss being pregnant. Fasting sucks ass too. You have my sympathies.

Good depth Steely D and nice squats. To your discussion on squats/deads on the same day. I will squat heavy week 1 and follow with speed pulls and the next week deadlift heavy with speed squats. Always squat on my RE day though. Works for me, but we all have to find what works for us.

Thanks Bumpy!
o_s: I drank so much water. I swear I downed 3 or 3.5 gallons from last night until right up until they stuck the needle in my arm. At one point I told them if they need a urine sample NOW is the time because I GOTTA GO! I almost blew the cup out of my hand with the pressure of the pee stream.

After 14 hours of fasting, they finally got my bloodwork. Had a pretty comprehensive panel that included a lot of non-routine tests, so they took forever getting everything together.

I followed up with a BK Big Swiss Steakhouse Burger, vanilla shake, my 2 scoop MD shake, then an hour later, a whole small frozen pizza. Managed to get a nap in, then off to workout, which sucked. I will summarize:

Lat P/D: no PR
T-Bar: no PR
Low Row: no PR

Had no energy, no intensity, but managed to get in 3 or 4 sets on each movement, sub-maximal weight.

Came home, another shake, work, blogged, twittered, surfed, and now eating a pound of beef and vegetables. I still haven’t recovered energy wise, so I’m calling it a night.

Gotta drive down to Beantown (boston) tomorrow for work, so I have to figure out how I’m going to blast my shoulders…

My very thought. No worries Steely - you got the work in and it’ll pay off in the next cycle.
