My only complaint so far is that most killers seem to have serious psychological issues that would preclude them from normal behavior, but perhaps they are too varied to really be able to tell how well that statement fits.
The only character I don’t care for is the Sgt Detective that gave Dexter a hard time in the station. His character seems forced.
I don’t think the character is the problem. The problem is Erik King is just a terrible, terrible actor. He’s got all the emotional of range of of a block of wood and makes a stiff like Dolph Lundgren look like Al Pacino.
It’s guys like him who make me wince every time we get on the argument about there not being enough T-men in Hollywood. King is absolutely chiseled out of granite, but he is just a brutally bad actor. I know this is heresy here on T-Nation, but I’d much rather see an emo-boy who can act over a buff guy who flat out horrible.
My general question about the show is … did they hire a casting agent from HBO?
Erik King, Lauren Velez, David Zayas, & Scott William Winters were all regular cast members on ‘Oz’. Michael C. Hall was a main character on ‘Six Feet Under’. C.S. Lee did a stint on ‘The Sopranos’.
After thinking about it a little more, I would also have killed Deb. Considering Brian was his real brother, and the only one who Dexter could be genuine with, combined with Dexter’s utter lack of compassion and emotion, Deb would get the knife (or power drill, as the case may be) if it were me.
When I saw the first episode, I thought King’s character seemed very over the top as well, but I just chalked that up to the goal of “establishing” his character in the pilot, and assumed they would tone him down in later episodes, which they did, at least somewhat. Though King is certainly not a great actor, all that is needed is for him to play the hardass senior cop, which he does reasonably well.
I’m going to have to check out the books this is based off of as well.
Figured I’d dig this one up since the 2nd season just started. I didn’t know much about the show until a week or two ago, and then I caught all of season one on OnDemand. Needless to say I’m hooked! This is already shaping up to be a wild season.
Spoiler
Dexter is such an idiot for not taping up the Super Sized Danny Trejo more than he did. I knew that guy was going to get away. It looks like Dexter gets him in the end though, looking at the clips from future episodes.
A friend recently turned me onto Dexter and I’ve become hooked on it is well. It is a great concept, and Michael C. Hall does a fine job, but some of the other actors/actresses aren’t too wonderful, and the writing/dialogue is sometimes a little amateurish, but I guess I’m able to look past all that.
It should start getting really interesting now that all kinds of Dexter’s shit is hitting the fan, according to the previews (they’re discovering all those bodies, the Sgt. is onto him, etc.).
Oh, and for the record, though I think her acting is a little sub-par, I think Dexter’s sister is hot!

But consider how lucky he was that it happened… If he’d managed to kill that guy he would have shown up to dump the body while the divers were busy dragging his corpses off the bottom of the ocean!
For any out there that enjoy the show, you should definitely read the books. You’ll be very surprised at the end of the first one, some key characters die who lived in the show, and some live, who died in the show. You also see a much darker side to Doakes.
The second book’s killer is EXTREMELY disturbing, and the second season of the show is not based on it at all. I believe because if they showed on tv what is discribed in the books it would give even the most disturb even the most desensitized viewers.

Glad you caught that, because I sure didn’t.
You theory is good on why they’re not going in that direction. The second season credits even, well, credit the first book. One other idea is that it’s still a TV series, and they have to make sure they have enough material for multiple seasons. They’re probably stretching this storyline out for all it’s worth, and then pick up with Dearly Devoted Dexter in season 3.
If they wind up using the second book, they may have to recast for Doakes, because I don’t think Erik King can pull off what you’re describing.

I’m still holding out hope that he succumbs to his dark passenger and kills his sister. I was laughing my ass off when he was saying to himself ‘I will not kill my sister. I will not kill my sister.’ after she failed to return the orange juice to the fridge.
Oh, when I said “nails,” I didn’t mean “kills.” I meant . . . “nails.” Just to be clear.

Yeah, I also have a tough time getting that image of him out of my head. Does anyone know if he (Michael C. Hall) is actually gay in real life? He seems a bit effeminate . . . .

He will always be little gay David Fischer to me.
It’s a great show. I’ve seen the entire season one and starting with season two now. Dexter is definitely a very interesting character.
I must say that it annoys me that he is having “feelings” for his girlfriend all of a sudden though. He didn’t complete a kill, and on top of that he got offended when the car salesman offended his wife, instead of keeping his cool attitude. I hope he keeps up with the killing and not caring about people.
Dexter was fine until his brother started making him relive his childhood, which seemed to turn on his emotions. He’s feeling now, and that more than likely won’t change. Now he has to learn how to “process” those emotions, hopefully with the help of that chick in rehab.
I couldn’t help but laugh my ass off at the final shot of Sunday’s episode, with that super-fast zoom in to a distressed Rita after seeing Dexter’s “sponsor”. Hey Rita, you’re the one who wanted him to go to rehab!
Yeah, I REALLY can’t stand his girlfriend. I see absolutely nothing interesting or redeeming about her, and I can’t understand why he’s even with her in the first place.
Anyway, I hope he hops on the British chick.
