Basically, its a dark comedy about a forensic investigator who is also a serial killer that preys on other killers because his father taught him to channel his ‘gifts’ and be more productive to society. It actually succeeds at making a hero out of a monster! Not an easy task.
Honestly, it really seems to capture the idea of a mostly emotionless person acting like a regular human to fit into society. My only complaint so far is that most killers seem to have serious psychological issues that would preclude them from normal behavior, but perhaps they are too varied to really be able to tell how well that statement fits. Here, Dexter seems to be a killer born with bloodlust, but shaped with a caring hand to be intelligent enough to learn to “fit in” and control his urges.
I’m going to have to read the book its based on–Darkly Dreaming Dexter I think–because it feels like they’re probably doing it up right for once.
I saw it and I fucking love it! The special effects are goulish and very realistic. I watch most of the HBO and SHO series and Dexter is going to be one of my favorites if it continues to be as good as the first episode.
The only character I don’t care for is the Sgt Detective that gave Dexter a hard time in the station. His character seems forced. He will be a good adversary but I hope they chill him out a little.
Yeah, I don’t get why they made that guy such a dick. Sure, there are intense people in the world, but that guy is f’ing over the top! He does have every right to be creeped out though! haha Dexter is almost letting his cover slip through his passion for death and blood.
And speaking of blood, hell yes they get it done with the special effects! At least on the level with your standard theater movie F/X.

I am going to have to get Showtime again. I saw the teasers for this and thought it looked good. I had Showtime a few years ago and like some of their series. Remember Resurrection Boulevard.

I have only had SHO for about a year now, when I switched to DirectTV. I never got a chance to see Resurrection Boulevard.
The only other series on SHO that I have watched just ended its first season. It was called “Brotherhood”. Outstanding show! One brother is a gangster the other a politician. Great story lines and I can’t wait until next season for that one.
I used to have HBO and CIN but switched to HBO and SHO when I started seeing the same movies being played on HBO and CIN. Glad I made the swap.
Yeah, i’ve heard good things about Brotherhood, but have yet to watch it. Right now, Showtime is earning my money with Dexter, Weeds, and to a lesser degree, Masters of Horror.
Sounds good. Will have to check it out. Normally, I only watch 3 shows: Entourage, Brotherhood and The Office. But, since Brotherhood and Entourage are done for the season (and I have class Thursday nights) I’ll have to try this show.
Don’t want to turn this into a Brotherhood thread but…
I’m originally from Providence so it’s funny to see how they portray it. They’re much more honest than the show ‘Providence’ was a few years ago. But, Irish mob? In Providence? Federal Hill? I think the Italians would have something to say about that. Very few Irish.
Cool to see the real local landmarks. Characters were pretty good–showing the good/bad in each though not sure if anyone could really have such pronounced differences. i.e. I kill a few people. But I’m a helpful alcoholic. I want to help the neighberhood, protect my family but I deal drugs and kill people.
Just waiting for someone to get a drink from the ‘bubblah’

They probably just didn’t want to offend Italians, because the Sopranos already ruffled some feathers.

Yeah–a friend and I were joking about this. HBO starts has a mob show with Italians in NY/NJ. SHO can’t copy so does Irish in RI. Not sure how many other pay stations have TV shows. Chinese mob in LA for Cinemax? Russians in Chicago for ??? By the time NBC catches on it will be the Lithauanian mob in Omaha. It will be “A Very Special NBC Event”

I wouldn’t say Brotherhood is a Sopranos knock off though. Its story line is heavier on back door politics than the mob. Either way it’s a good show.
Dexter is getting better each week! This dude is in his house and Dexter doesn’t give a rats ass! Dexter’s GF looks like the mom next door, but then they show her in S&M gear in previews. BOING!
I just finished watching this show and it is amazing. I was especially fascinated with Dexter’s psyche and way of viewing the world. 5/5 in my book. Does anyone know when the next season airs?
!spoiler ahead!
The ending was very intense, and I’m still wondering who I would’ve killed if in Dex’s position. Knowing the kind of mind Dexter had, one would think he would’ve killed Deb, but perhaps Harry had a stronger influence on Dex then he knew. That is all.

I would have killed Deb.
Not because I am a homicidal sociopath, but because her character annoys the ever-living shit out of me. Never in all my years of watching TV have I wanted a character to take a dirt nap as much as I want that fate for Deb.
