Should I Let the Guy Win?

Where would this country be if George Washington felt bad for the British and decided to let them win one? [/quote]

Washington was definitely not undefeated…

Didn’t read the original post but the answer is “No”. You should never let anyone win. Ever. If you are going to be in a situation where you will be expected to lose then don’t play. Letting someone win is demoralizing and no fun for anybody.

Do not ever LET someone else win. If you like the guy, coach him. Help him up his game. Do not throw the game. If he doesn’t figure it out immediately, he will soon enough. And then you will have destroyed what could be a good friendship. It isn’t worth it for either of you.

My experience:

I was in a company pool tournament at a company-sponsored outing once while summer-clerking and competing for a job with many others. I was very, very good at pool back then and ended up playing the big boss for the title. Everybody there told me the guy was crazy competitive and to let him win or I probably wouldn’t get the job. So, in a best of three match, I won the toss and sank the 8 on the break in the first game and won. Then I broke and ran out in the second game and won without letting him shoot. The guy looked like he was going to blow a gasket and I was pretty concerned.

The next day, he came to my office and closed the door and told me he suspected that others had advised me to tank and that if I had tanked the game he probably would have fired me and that he didn’t want anyone working for him who wasn’t a ruthless killer. Then he invited me to go golfing instead of working that afternoon.

IMO, you don’t want to work for anyone who would want you to tank to stroke his ego anyway so just don’t do it.

But at least we fought fair. Oh wait…

Letting him win is a chick thing.

If he is still playing after 10 games, he is enjoying the competition, so carry on.

Great story.

Don’t worry guys, I’ve never had any intention of letting him win. I just wanted to hear what everyone would say. I was kind of hoping some chicks would chime in so I could see if they were like minded with my wife.
