hey. hope you are having fun diving.
Heh, your training sounds like an average day with my body. I am mildly dyspraxic and whilst my fine motor skills are good (I can touch type etc), my proprioception sucks.
Have fun with the diving!
Alexus, yeah I had fun, very very tiring fun though. 2 dives a day, lugging my equipment, dismantling and setting up twice a day PLUS putting on a wet wetsuit twice a day (it was never dry after the 1st dive). Anyway you’ll find I do lots of moaning but it was fun. We didn’t quite get the good weather I was hoping for. If I can figure out how to put up photo’s on my profile where only friends can see I’ll put some of them up.
Hey Cal, yeah my proprioception is off at times, other times it is bang on. I have not quite matched any patterns as to when it will go off and when it will be fine, which is why I get a bit nervous an hour before I train w/ Oly lifts. I can’t tell when its going to be a good day or not till I’m actually doing it. Maybe its something that I either just have to go with or maybe something I should keep track of???
I’m in a bit of a pickle this week with regards to going back for coaching & a place to do oly lifting. My 2 months that I paid for were up and at the moment I don’t have any money for now, they do a 3 month, 6 month & yearly contract. I’m still with my other crappy gym. But I’m afraid if I don’t get back on that oly lifting horse??? Anyway I think the worst case senario is that I’ll miss another week of it.
Money woes!
So I’ve decided to just do some training at home for now. I’ll wrap my wrists nice and good since I don’t have an oly bar. I’m going to stay light and just hammer out reps, which is something I don’t do around my coach (there’s probably a reason he doesn’t but its only for a week or two).
Also decided that I need to practice non-attachment (in the buddist sense), so I’ll start with just allowing my body to have great and crappy sessions without any judgement. The mystery of why I have good ones and bad ones, I can solve later. A nice hot bubble bath is a great place to contemplate life.
I need to plan a little diving expedition of my own this summer. Also toying with the idea of booking for Costa Rica in Feb and going there to dive the whole week. I have a girlfriend who surfs, we’re thinking of hitting the waters together. I’d go back in the future with the hubbie for some rain forest hiking.
Crappy sessions come and go. Standing before the bar every week despite the crappy days is the real victory. Yes learn from the not so good days but also move on. Don’t get bogged down by analysis. Work on weak points while you’re at it.
nlmain, Costa Rica sounds lovely, take me with you, PLEASE ![]()
I think I’ll make that my new motto “Standing before the bar every week…is the real victory”
So yesterday got a little creative and kinda set up my own stuff at home, not exactly ideal since I don’t have an oly bar, but it was ok.
Snatching went up to 22.5kg starting from boxes (I don’t have any height on my plates). I kept it light & wrapped my wrists, as I couldn’t really afford to do any fails. Anyway it was hard enough to set up as I still have diving equipment all around the place.
I did one set that I was happy with. The rest were a bit iffy. I still have to concentrate too much on the first pull (patience, I know!). Couldn’t lock out on my right shoulder when it got tired, I know my scapula needs work, guess it needs more than I thought.
I hope your diving trip was fun.
Very cool on the home set-up. Every little bit helps.
I also like
‘It’s not a sprint, but a marathon.’ I think that’s how it goes.
If we woke up one day the strongest, fastest, biggest, leanest, etc that we could be, then what would we have learned along the way?

That I am superfly ![]()
lol… just teasin.
sbmart2, yes it was fun and exhausting. I’ll see about some pics on the set up, very very DIY. It might take a bit getting used to do this at home, but its only temporary till I gets some moola.
MiM, ooo I don’t know only crazy people do marathons hee hee. But I get what you are saying, gotta think longterm.
nlmain, I think you’re superfly
Yesterday did some snatches before going to pool. Was late for the pool too, so everything was kinda half assed. Tried to set up recording it too, um well its a work in progress, and still want to limit who views it too. Wasn’t happy with the snatches, oh well, I also probably wasn’t focused as I should be as I knew I only had a short time.
Feeling frustrated and unmotivated about everything, it’ll pass, probably just post-holiday & lack of money woes.
Tonight will be about yoga and getting a bit more mentally grounded. Gonna see then if I can give myself a bit more time with snatching tomorrow. Just focus on improving one part of the lift at a time.
Hey Techno! Just poppin’ in to catch up. Saw that you were feeling a little blah with the training - meh! We all go through those phases, so hang in there.
First off - freaking awesome on the diving! Lucky you. I don’t have the balls like you and Frenchie to dive into the deep. I’m a leo. Cats and water, not so much. lol!
And as for the money woes. UGH! I hear you on that too. Dealing with money issues can be incredibly stressful, and stress is no bueno. Stress completely incapacitates me, actually, which is why I always err on the side of irrational optimism. Its like tricking myself! Maybe you can use some of that Buddhist non-attachment in this case too - think, money will come and money will go deep breath lol! That won’t feed you, but you never know, you just might find free food, or a generous friend, or something that helps pick up the slack while the money is a little tight. Sending you good vibes on that though!
Finally! As for the training…yoga, swimming, snatching - sounds great! Just keep yourself moving and definitely use that time to get centered. That’s the time when you do NOT have to worry about bills, family, work, etc. Its just you and your body - enjoy it!
Also, I’ve been in and out of the gym since starting Oly thanks to a bunch of injuries (oy!) and just working snatch technique with a broomstick has been a great way for me to keep my Oly skills in tact while not being able to work with my coach. And even if you can’t workout at the Oly gym, there’s tons you can do that will help your Oly so that once you’re back into the Oly gym you won’t have missed a beat! If you’re interested I’d be glad to throw in my two cents and toss some ideas your way - do you access to an barbell or dumb bells?
Sorry for the loooong post!! Hang in there, mama!
Machy! Now I know why everyone around here thinks youre so special. Yes it will pass, I’m resourceful enough. and I sent my coach a text explaining my money situation, I put it out there so we’ll see what he & the owners say. Its a small enough place, think I counted 60 programs (ie 60 people), so they can’t be getting loads of money in.
In one way I feel like I’m giving myself an excuses not to trek all the way out there for awhile but on the other hand realistically I just don’t have the money right now.
There is TONS I can do still on my own, my technique is, well you’ve heard my complaints, so I can still work with that. Any tips you have would be welcomed but don’t go through too much trouble, things could pick up next week.
Anyway I’m going to go do a nice warm up before working with my homely bar.
LOL! Oh please. I’m not saying anything anyone else here wouldn’t say. But I’m glad you appreciate it!
And frankly, I also have to trek over an hour to get to my Oly gym, and I aint gonna lie, it IS nice to not have to make that commute. So enjoy some of that extra free time while you can. When the Oly bug bites you again and you get the itch, you’ll find your way back in there.
Well, I know you do yoga and swimming and snatch tech, do you ever do stuff for cleans? Push presses? You can use your homely bar for those too! ![]()
Ha thanks Machy, yeah that hour to get there is the worst, not to mention I’m all nerves waiting to get there.
Yeah I was thinking of doing cleans again, but I have this snatch bug so I’m itching that since I don’t have to listen to my coach. I’m taking on board what my coach has instructed me to do but also kinda what I just want to do. The cleans are easier (for me anyway) so not in rush on those.
I managed to have a decent enough session at home. I can’t just go into a snatch, I have to do the snatch break downs first to get me focused. Even recorded them, unfortunately its not my computer so I won’t be able to upload it until Monday. And the software is weird on it, couldn’t break it up so its a combination of multiple clips that last 10 mins. Took too long to even try to email myself so have to wait till I get access again.
Anyway I’m off this weekend to a wedding I can’t afford to attend, at least I don’t have to pay for the hotel. Plus missing out on a dive on Sun. Anyway enough moaning from me.
Well Hot Damn! My coach said to just come on down next week and I could train for free the rest of the month. They are also moving the facilities in 6 weeks (fingers crossed), it’ll be slightly closer to work, still a bit awkward to get home from but it will be closer (as the crow flies) and they are going to lower prices too since their rent will be down.
I also managed to upload the home video, its a bit fuzzy though and long. You’ll have excuse the music, L7 just seemed appropriate even though they are terrible live.
The vid will be temporarily available here, I’ll then move it to my hub.

@ 2:28 is my ugly snatch pull
@ 4:30 22.5kg hang snatch starts
@ 5:40 knee dips (really need help with these)
@ 6:05 pull from boxes start
@ 9:20 hang snatch of 25kg
OMG! That’s freaking awesome! Woot woot for positive vibes going your way! I love when things even out like that. Good stuff.
I have no critique for your snatch work - looks pretty darn good!! The only thing I noticed though, is that sometimes you’re not letting the second extension do the work and you’re using your arms a bit to get the bar overhead. Keep those arms loose, and when you get your hips through on the 2nd ext, with your arms loose, the bar should fly up your torso, then you DROP. You do keep the bar close to you, so you’ve got the leg up on that. But I’ll let your coach, coach you. lol!
And I can’t believe you’re doing all of that with no shoes on! You have great flexibility! Keep up the great work and enjoy the wedding!! (if you haven’t already…I never know what time it is down unda)
holy crap… is it just me, or do we look like we were separated at birth, or something? except you have bendier ankles, obviously… what year were you born?
looking pretty good to me. you might want to be careful how you lower the bar, though (except when it comes down hard and you don’t have any other option). try and maintain your lumbar arch when you lower it. it will save your lumbar spine considerably (even though it will feel like more work to lower it carefully).
your hips shoot up a bit quick, too, when you pull from the floor. but things are looking pretty good to me. except kinda freaky… thought i was seeing myself there for a minute lol.
Nice work! It was actually kind of hard to see angles very well in that video, but you look like you’re doing really well. That weight is sure light for you!
