I’ll give you a quick version of my labor while she naps…
I went into labor on the 18th around 9 pm. It wasn’t the bumpy jeep ride or the castor oil, it was the sex. ![]()
My contractions started half an hour later and I waited until 11:30 to go in to the hospital. By that time they were pretty regular and lasting about 30 seconds every 5 minutes.
By 5 am I was 5 centimeters. By 7 am I was 6 centimeters. My doctor came in to see me around 9 am and I was still at 6. He put me on pitocin immediately. I thought I was going to die. The pain was manageable without it although I was lucky to be able to stand next to the bed… screw walking around! Every time I’d get a contraction my knees would buckle.
So I dealt with pitocin contractions for three hours and then finally gave in and asked for an epidural. Mind you, I hadn’t dilated any further even with the addition of pitocin. Bastard.
Within 25 minutes of having the epidural I was complete and ready to deliver. However, apparently my doctor was at his office in another city. So they made me wait, lying on the bed in my epidural induced haze, for an hour and a half before I could push. That pressure was the most intense thing I’ve ever felt my body deal with.
Finally after he arrived I delivered her in all of 10 minutes of pushing. She’s such a strong baby girl, her heart rate wasn’t even affected by the contractions. She was still kicking me while her head was crowning.
She barely cried at all when she came out. She just stared and stared. She is actually a very quiet baby so far. Even an exam from the pediatrician just got a few squeaks out of her.
The overnight stay in the hospital was hell. Every time I could sleep, someone was waking me up for something stupid. I got more sleep after insisting on coming home a day early.
So we’re settling in and trying to establish a routine. Breastfeeding is going pretty good. I’m finally figuring out how to get her latched on so I’m not in pain and she’s just guzzling it down.
She can already push off my shoulder and she holds her head up and looks around like a 6 week old. I’m in love. ![]()

10 minutes, way to go! Took me almost 3 hours, they were threatening the salad spoons to pull her out.
I’m glad you are at home with some peace, hospitals suck. The nursing is going to hurt for a while, but you boobs will toughen up fast. The first week is hard but afterwards it’s a breeze and so worth it.
