Because what supplement company would buy deca to put in their supplements?? Too expensive, they’d never make a profit.

The thing that pisses me off is that Merriman and his agent completely threw all of us under the bus with this. They are pushing the envelope for Congress to get involved and have all supplements regulated.
For the slow ones out there, this translates to “More expensive and less available supplements”.
If- and that’s a big if- it truly was because nandrolone was in a “legal” supplement, then the company that made the supplement should bear culpability, but I’m not buying that it was “unwittingly” ingested. As much money that is involved with pro sports, I can’t believe there isn’t an “approved provider” list as well as “approved products”. This would completely rule out the “I didn’t know it was in that supplement” excuse.
And it’s not like Deca isn’t widely known. I’ve heard of people taking deca since my freshman year in high school, and I’m sure I’m not the only one. The fact that he said that he didn’t know that a pretty popular drug like deca was in the supplement – I’m dying to find out what legal supplement includes nandrolone – is ridiculous.
Some good posts above. Here is a possible scenario (and this is about the only thing I will truly say in Merriman’s defense).
I do not think there is a very comprehensive list of approved supplements. My gut tells me its more like sponsored stuff, “Official Vitamin of the NFL” or some junk like that. I would guess any approved list is probably not terribly long, but that being said, if this is how you make your living and don’t want to chance it, you better be damn sure of what is in anything you are taking as a supplement.

I think what sucks most about this is the possible effect that it can have on us. I’m all for people using steroids if people want to (except in sports). However, the people that opt to stay clean and just use things like protein powders, creatine, and even natural t-boosters will end up falling under scrutiny, too. For some reason, it seems like, with all the research the government claims to do, they’re quick to lump everything under the same category.
[You know, you’re a real idiot. This is the second or third discussion that you take part in where you offer a lot of opinions but don’t back anything up with any real information. I understand that there is pressure and all this other stuff, and that’s fine. I understand that. However, you expect me or anyone to just sit here and take what you say as fact just because you say it’s true? We’re taking part in a discussion man, where people offer opinions, not just shoot down the thoughts of everyone else with flase claims and an appearance of knowledge. For all I know, you had to take performance enhancers because you sucked and you thought it would somehow help that. But it didn’t. You sucked, and now you want to go and say that because you sucked and had to take something that everyone else in the league is in the same boat (that boat filled with people who suck). Dude, get over it. You sucked. It’s not the end of the world. Just don’t go and accuse everyone of taking HGH or whatever just because you had to make up for your shortcomings. You sucked. It’s fine. Just don’t accuse everyone of the same. That’s all I’m saying.
This was an obvious boneheaded mistake, but Im sure that Shawne will learn from it and move on. The simple fact that he was juicing I think is moot, especially when it comes to the NFL, if you want to survive, then you find a way, its just that now Shawne will have to find another way, Oh, and by the way, this is the guy I wanted the Bears to draft, instead of Mr. Benson, it would have been nice to see Shawne Merriman and Brian Urlacher on the same team, kinda scary I`d say.

If everyone in the NFL used steroids the entertainment value of it would be somewhere close to WWE or whatever it’s called now.
What makes professional sports so interesting and amazing is the fact that these guys put in so much hard work and do it without “outside help.”
At least for me that’s what does it.
Sorry to have to break this to you, but the majority of NFL players juice. You’re living in a fantasy world if you believe otherwise.
And saying if NFL players juiced it would have the entertainment value of WWE is a stupid statement. You’ll never see Eli Manning hand off to Tiki Barber only to have Tiki bash a chair over Eli’s head and then run it back to the wrong end zone and declaring himself a member of the other team (Though with TO that’s a completely possible scenerio).
That and the WWE is a freak show where they care more about being big than their athleticism.
Boy, i’m sure glad everyone here is mature!
My point wasn’t that no one in the NFL uses steroids, of course people in the NFL use steroids. Believe it or not, i’m not an idiot, and maybe I just wasn’t clear on my point (or maybe some of you are just way too eager to try and jump down someone’s throat over the internet because you’re depressed about who you are in the real world - I don’t know).
My point was that if it was legal in the NFL to use Steroids the entertainment value would drop significantly - to the level of WWE. I didn’t say it would turn into the WWE, but that’s apparently a bit above your reading comprehension level, so i’ll let that slide.
It’s just like Baseball - Steroids aren’t legal in Baseball, but since Juiced and whatever other book(s) came out anytime someone is having a good streak or year (Howard from the Phillies, for example) people look at them and say, “Wow, that’s good, but he’s on the juice.”
It doesn’t matter if they are or not, it’s a perception, and that’s what’s going to happen to the NFL if people start getting caught or it’s brought to the publics eye as it was with baseball.
