Seriously Stoopid People in the Gym

ok, here is a good one. I was getting ready to do another set of heavy squats, had gotten into position under the bar and a split second before I was going to lift it off the pins I hear a noise to my right. I look over and some clueless dude with earbuds in is taking off one of the plates! wtf? srly. w-t-f? I bailed instantly then chewed him a new asshole which he didn’t like cause he “didn’t know” I was using it an I was, apparently, suffering from roid rage. Or something.

Sorry, Just had to share. Any of you all have some noob do something stoopid to you during a lift?

He could have killed you if the bar was really loaded and it snapped back.

Yip. I figured at the least with a massive imbalance I’d have probably gotten a very serious back injury. What experienced lifter expects the bar to be out of control as soon as it leaves the pins?

You may want to check out the curls in the squat rack threads…

Yeah, the Headphones in the Gym thread turned into this and I had a really similar story to the OPs in there.

Was he wearing a yellow tank top? I think I know that guy.

You can’t be that stupid. Someone would have to know the difference between a plate on a loaded barbell and one that was properly racked. I would have yelled at the guy to.

I had a friend not put a plate on 1 side. It became very apparent, very quickly the weight was unbalanced so not sure it’s dangerous. That was a 10kg/22lbs plate and not a 45 though.

I had someone reach into the rack (to grab a pad) while I was squatting, was thoroughly pissed.

I was at the gym one time and, and fairly tall guy was squatting he had 315 on the bar and when he was done he left his weight on the bar and walked away. I should have told him to re rack his weight but decided to mind my own business. So anyways I’m in the squat rack next to the one with a loaded barbell, a guy comes over starts un racking the weights I don’t really pay attention until he has all 1 plate on 1 side and 3 on the other, well he takes off the one plate and the bar comes flying into the mirror smashing it and the other weights smash on the floor. Luckily for me he had taken them on the side next to me so the bar didn’t hit me.

Fuck stupid people like that guy and the lazy douchebag who wouldn’t pick up after himself.

I have never understood people doing that but fuck the guy leaving his weights on the bar. I hate that shit. If you are to damn lazy to unrack your weights then stay the fuck at home. I had to unload 1200 lbs of 100 lb plates off the leg press for this lady who wanted to use the machine the other day because some tool bag who thought he was hot shit couldn’t be bothered to unrack his weights.

Akshully I’m thinking that a thread of people who nearly cause a catastrophe for someone (or themselves too) else warrants its own thread. SRC is a lot of fun but mostly stories of clueless people being ineffective or just being in the way.

One other story I witnessed. Crossfit guy (t-shirt and everything) is doing his workout which involves a bunch of kettlebell work. He really sucks, but whatever. Then he starts chatting up some overweight dude about how awesome it is. Next thing I see is fat guy is trying a max effort swing with probably 70 or 80 lbs with horrible form: deep squat + front raise.

I start over there to tell him to stop and find a real coach but don’t make it in time. He gets through a couple, drops the weight, hits the ground and starts screaming bloody murder about his back. Yeah, he was in bad shape so I told him he had to go to the ER. Crossfit guy sort of shrugs and quietly walks out about this time. Guess the fat guy wasn’t tough enough. After about 15 - 20 minutes on the ground the fat dude was able to shuffle to his car and head off.

Sheesh.

Oh I had a bar break on me. Old rusty bar. I loved it. Made my ego fly…rusty equipment chalk etc. I had 4 plates a side on and the bearing snapped when I came out of the hole in a squat. The bar was flexing at the time and the weight slipped and slid off one side almost taking me out with it. I think being in a power rack saved me. I asked the manager of the gym if I could keep the bar and they said no. :frowning: Would have made a good trophy

They might have thought you were thinking it would make for good evidence in your lawsuit so they needed to make it disappear ha

I was thinking the same thing.

Today someone started cable curling inside the station where I was doing chin-ups right in the middle. I grabbed the chin-up bar, lifted my leg and swing-kicked him out of the station.

Not really, I just asked him if he could do them sideways.

I had a fool sit down on the other end of the moveable bench while I was resting between sets of db bench. I just said to him “What the fuck??”

Awww nope. They got something on the inside and welded them solid. Poor bar …nobody used it after that.

I going to make my own thread about this, but this OP seems fairly close to my own problem.

Today I was doing deadlifts, warming up with 185lbs. Since I was going to change the weights next set I didn’t use the clamps. While I was doing reps with the 185, some guy walks in front of me and keeps saying “Clang” each time the weights touch the ground. Yes the weights made some noise but I wasn’t dropping them from above my knee or anything, maybe just the last 2-3 inches of lowering. Then when doing 2 plates, I finished my set and he turns to me and says “good work”. I let it go and didn’t say anything to him, but part of me wants to just interupt him next time he is doing squats or bench to see how it feels.

Damn you know me too?

One time my buddy was doing dumbbell flyes in the free weights section where all the adjustable benches are when this kid dragged over a barbell and started loading it up. My buddy asked him what he was doing and he said deadlifts, so my buddy explained to him that deadlifts were usually done over by the squat racks. The kid ignored my friend and kept loading the bar up, so my buddy starting doing his set and the kid managed to smoke my friend in the arm when he was in the bottom position of the fly. Needless to say he lost his shit.

I’ve seen this kid get yelled at on three different occasions besides the one described above. You think he would get a clue to stop doing stupid shit
