Sean Sherk Stripped of LW Title

"Sean Sherk has been stripped of his UFC lightweight crown, a Zuffa official confirmed this afternoon. The promotion’s decision to unseat Sherk came after his appeal to contest a steroids suspension did not vindicate him.

The California State Athletic Commission voted at a hearing Tuesday in Los Angeles to reduce Sherk??s suspension for suspected steroid use from one year to six months. Sherk, whose $2,500 fine was upheld by the commission, will be eligible to return to the Octagon next month."

“The UFC has already announced an interim lightweight champion match between BJ Penn and Joe Stevenson at UFC 80 ??Rapid Fire?? on Saturday, Jan. 19 at the Metro Radio Arena in Newcastle, England. It is unclear if the interim title will now be promoted for the vacant title.”

On a side note, does anyone know who does the songs at the beginning of every UFC event and at the credit/highlight reel at the end?

Also, happy retirement Big John.

Good, he was a boring fighter.

War BJ PENN!

Amen brother. It really gave him an edge…the edge of the UFC boot! Maybe they need to start testing everyones flaxseed oil. Sherk wouldn’t really need roids would he?

On another note Joe Daddy’s gonna kick Penns ass! Maybe…I could be wrong on all counts of my post.

I don’t agree with Dana’s decision. He knows full well we all take steriods to be at that level.

You’re saying you are Sean Sherk?!? Would be interesting to know. I was wondering whether the UFC fighters take steroids. Some fighters look absolutely stacked but quite a few don’t look that big even for their weight class, e.g. BJ Penn.

The rules say you aren’t allowed to take them so it’s potentially an unfair advantage if you take them which I wouldn’t appreciate as a fighter.

BJ doesn’t juice but he is a genetic mutant, so I do sometimes feel a bit guilty cheering for him over someone I know who works harder, steroids or not. BJ is infamous for a questionable work ethic and making up for it with the retarded amount of talent he has. I do have to respect him for fighting much larger guys, though.

He’s definitely one of a kind. I’m really excited for the Stevenson/Penn fight, regardless of who wins.

I call bullshit on the delay in pulling the belt.

Saying he was waitign to see what CSAC was going to do (conjecture on my part only) makes no sense. Dana had to know some sort of saction was coming down, even if it wasn’t the full year off. Thus he should have made the decision months ago, pulled dit and saved a lot of drama.

And I’m going for Penn. Regardless, winner should face Huerta or Ken/Flo.

I agree that BJ seems to lack a good work ethic sometimes. In fact he came out and said that is why he thinks his rib broke during the Hughes fight. I don’t think BJ really should be fighting for the light weight title. The only light weight fight he has had in the last I believe 2-3 years his fight against Pulver. Not to take anything away from him because he is such a good fighter but just doesn’t fight often enough for me.

Penn needs to win his silly belt and then get back to welterweight. He needs to face Hughes and GSP again, since there isn’t really anyone compelling at lightweight to face him, now that Sherk has been exposed.

The 155 division is way more stacked than most division. Also why would BJ fight GSP/hughes again? He lost to both of them what has he done to earn that shot. People give BJ to many hand outs and not enough based on what he has done.

Totally agree. I can’t really see BJ do much against strong guys with conditioning like GSP and Hughes unless he catches them in a submission before they knock him out.

The track is face the pain by Stemm

Cheers

Has he actually retired? Is he that old? That is such a loss. I was wondering what was going on coz he didn’t take any of the fights in the last UFC. I really hope he comes back at some point.

No shit. I feel a big void in the mma universe opening up. What an icon he’s been for the UFC. Will be missed for sure.

What kind of rift are you referring to?

Being an official for state comissions pays next to nothing. Big John took a position with The Fight Network and probably decided it’s time to start getting paid from his popularity.

Not his choice.

The NJSAC has their own pool of experienced MMA refs and didn’t feel the need to bring in guys from out of state. For all of UFC 78s shortcomings, poor refereeing was not one of them. I thought the NJ guys did an excellent job.

As the individual SACs develop their own pool of refs, there will be less and less demand for the nomad referees who seem to be at every show across the country. Big John has played a key role in the education and development of MMA refs nationwide and his success in that venture has resulted in decreased demand for his services as a ref.

He saw the writing on the wall and decided to plan for his future by seeking other opportunities.
