Sean Connery 3rd Place Mr. Universe

Thanks, Robo1 and Zap Branigan.

It’s the Official Website of Sir Sean Connery that has it wrong - on two counts!

Check it out:

“His hobby of bodybuilding culminated in a bid for the 1950 Mr. Universe title where he placed third.”

Now here’s something to ponder. If you think more highly of Sean just because he did some lifting before he hit the steam room, please tell me you’re all impressed with Daniel Craig in Casino Royale.
Hah! You don’t really want to get me started on a rant about Craig (and Roger Moore) & their mislaid crowd-pleasing kissassed renunciation of the Bond character using firearms to defend the realm now, eh? (j/k/:wink:

I find it amusing you mention this, as they tried to market Craig (The anti-Bond who likely has Ian Fleming spinning in his grave…He was skeptical of Connery until he met him in person and signed off on Sean resembling the black haired “Hoagy Carmichael with the cruel smile” he had envisioned for 007) to the women simply because the fair-haired metrosexual Craig looked “fit”. F’Crissake, there are “Men’s Health” cover models that put him to shame!.

Back in the early 60’s, the average man looked up to Sean’s physique, and you have to account for the fact that there were tons of WW2 veterans out there then who knew what it meant to be in-shape for combat, a far cry from being in Bill Pearl/Bodybuilder specialization shape, important to keep in context when evaluating the physique standards of that era!}
Remember the height/Steve Reeves factors also…

Shot of the alleged first man to build 20 Inch arms, Leroy Colbert. Again, highly unusual for those days, cant expect the future Sir Sean, or even Demi-God Reeves to have guns like these in 1953!! (less than 10 years after WW2)…

Does anyone else think it would be fair to say that Connery didn’t even seriously work out with weights to get in this contest?

With good genetics, some time spent dicking around with a 100lb weight set, and some not-very-intense bodyweight stuff his physique could be achieved with very little effort.
Hmmm. Well take a look at the vast majority of “members’ photographs” on just about any bodybuilding website and ask yourself the question again.

From my experience the vast majority of present day pictures I’ve seen still fall short of what SC looked like in those pictures. Sure, I read countless posts claiming they’re making amazing gains by following Coach-X’s cutting edge workouts and diet plan, but I’m not seeing any pictures to confirm this.

So, to answer your question, I think SC probably put in more effort than you are giving him credit for.

I remember years ago when I heard this I couldn’t believe it. This was mainly due to the picture of him on the Dr. No sound track album that we happened to have. This was 1962 and I was shocked to see how skinny his arm is…it looks like a broom stick! I thought how could he have possibly been a Mr. Universe contender??

I call diet & his height on this (no more military-all-you-can-eat mess hall food and exercise), not to mention the hot weather outdoor shooting in Jamaica could cut weight, especially if he was eating like a 1960’s normal human rather than a bodybuilder of the era (whose diets were nowhere near as sophisticated as today, re; protein supps, macronutrient ratios, etc.

You had to eat tons of real food: steak & eggs, full fat milk, a chore for the less than dedicated). I’m guessing that cover was shot during or after the shoot. I could be wrong though.
