It is intriguing that in every other country with slavery abolished within the last two centuries all seem to have less social stigma regarding the formerly enslaved group and seem to have a better national relationship and fewer if any programs specifically geared towards the enslaved group. Serfdom in Russia anyone? There’s no affirmative action for former serf families nor any type of reparations for the former laborers.

Most of the issue with white to black racism as I see it and have discussed it with people of all races being different than white to white or X to X as opposed to X to Y is that the overwhelming majority of blacks in America are descended from slaves and it’s an impossible trait not to see specifically because it is just as un-missable as a trait can be, literally the color of your skin. I’d like to think that another 100 years will see the end of white/black/black/white (however you would like to write it) racism in it’s present form but it’s become a social object that has been accepted as politically incorrect and then left to it’s own devices to grow into American racism in it’s present form.

Having programs and public events (such as black history month) specifically geared towards giving assistance and pride to a formerly enslaved group places the message that that group needs said programs and assistance in order to have pride or achieve success.

Just my 2 cents.

All he knew about himself at the beginning of the show was that he was of French and Turkish descent. By the end of the show he finds out that he’s a direct descendant of King George II.

Another episode features celebrity chef Ainsley Harriott. At the beginning of the episode all he knows is that he’s descended from Jamaican/West Indian slaves. He soon finds out that he is also descended from white slave traders in Jamaica.

My cousin living in Perth told me once of his 17 year old Australian classmate who had no idea of the Aboriginal genocide and and the abuse of the indigenous children until her and other group of students had to write a thesis on races relations in Australia. Apparently she was so horrified she cried during the presentation. Her family had cocooned her so well.

She is one of the few Australians who are genuinely sorry on ‘sorry day’.
