Schoolgirls Using Steroids

“An alarming number of American girls, some as young as 9, are using bodybuilding steroids – not necessarily to get an edge on the playing field, but to get the toned, sculpted look of models and movie stars, experts say.”

holy crap.

Well, good thing they are illegal… it certainly seems to be stopping everyone from getting ahold of them.

I’m guessing we should immediately go back to prohibition, didn’t that work well too?

Yeah, they’re screaming everywhere:

You mean Dianabol? If so, that is indeed a steroid.

I believe it’s spelled dianabol. I could be wrong also. Anyway, it’s the stuff Arnold used so it’s been around awhile.

I believe the correct term is “Smuggle”.

The notion of a 9 year old girl using them (even if she was the ONLY girl that youung to do so) is hard to comprehend. First off, no 9 year old girl should have such self-image problems that she feels the need to use steroids to correct that problem. Second off, where the heck does someone 9 friggin’ years old get gear?? When I was 9 (and yes, I know this is going to sound like a trudge to school up hill both ways in the snow), I was thinking about buying baseball cards. I don’t even think I knew what a steroid was back then.

I admit a lot of this story sounds like scare tactics, but the image of someone that young using is profoundly troubling. That’s one sad little mixed-up kid.

Kuz

I agree with Kuz. I know that kids now a-days (I sound old) are acting older than they really are but c’mon. I would have a hard time believing that a nine year old boy would have trouble buying gear (unless his dad was craig titus) let alone a girl. It sounds a little far fetched.

I heard this on the radio this morning. To be honest, I think it’s a crock of shit. I’ve seen too many of these bogus stories based on shoddy studies and sensationalized to conform to the current fanatical anti-steroid climate.

Just read that shit. It smacks of bullshit. You’re telling me that hundreds of thousands if not millions of middle-school to high-school aged GIRLS are taking anabolic androgenic steroids for cosmetic purposes? Call me naive, but I just have trouble swallowing it.

How is a nine year old girl getting steroids on the black market? No teacher or parent would give steroids to a nine year old girl. And even the scummiest of dealers would probably not sell to a God damn nine year old GIRL. How is a nine year old paying for steroids on the Internet? How is she hiding the fact that steroids are being delivered to her? Who here has ever seen or heard of a nine year old getting packages for herself in the mail that no one is suspicious of? And if this is some freak occurrance, which it would HAVE to be, in my opinion, then why is this making huge headlines? I’m sure there are nine year old girls taking alcohol from their parents’ cupboards and mistakenly putting cocaine on their cereal because they think it’s sugar. Is this really national front-page news?

When this country gets into a media-induced fervor about something, it really becomes scary to watch.

I’m very skeptic.

How did they get their data? Surveys? Kids and teenagers love to get a cheap laugh out of these things. At that age, every survey I’ve ever filled out became a pure joke - everything from age to name to the answers chosen, was fair game.

Also, did the individuals in question fully understand what was meant by ‘steroids’? It’s easy to mistake something like steroids for some other drug when you’re that young. Sure, the following questions about self-image don’t make sense to you, but the whole survey is a bit strange anyway.

How were the samples chosen? Samples consisting mostly of selected groups (i.e. sports groups, individuals with self-image problems, etc) are not representative of the whole population and as such are obsolete.

What options were available to the surveyees? Particularly among very young individuals (3rd graders for example), they will very often pick an option if it doesn’t apply to them - just because it is somewhat closer than any other option. I remember filling out several surveys as a kid where every other question depended on the first. If your answer was no to this first question you didn’t have to answer the rest, and I did anyway because I thought they wanted me to - I just picked whatever options I felt I should pick, the ones that made slightly more sense. Was that survey valid? Fuck no. Are these surveys valid? I believe not.

Take a survey of 1-3rd graders on their crack usage and I promise at least one will have cheap laugh at your expense.

Chris,

I pretty well agree.

I’d honestly suspect that these stories are “requested” or “suggested” in order to make it easier to bring about soon to be proposed legislation.

Why the hell else whip up such a frenzy over something so crazy?

Either the laws don’t work and other things should be attempted, or the laws work reasonably well and the story is bullshit.

Anyhow, upon waking I heard this item quoted on the radio. Sad, whether or not true.

I noticed in the last paragraph that they included supps with roids, with the same tone that is used to say “we need to talk to our kids about drugs.”.

Looks like the propaganda machines are up and running.

You have to be very careful about generalizing a trait to a whole population.

Is that trait a freak ocurrence or does it belong to a whole class of individuals? Does the trait even exist - that is, do the individuals claiming the trait really possess it? Has a kid who says he’s used steroids really have a history of using, or even trying them? This is a tricky subject, as kids are prone to joking and lying - either for attention, a cheap laugh, or to avoid trouble - as they are to simple misunderstanding.

In high school they have students fill out surveys about drug use and sex. Most students don’t take them seriously, so if this study is based on them I don’t think its credible.

Don’t forget how many people actually think creatine and protein powder are steroids.

I think that all those girls are either taking some dietary supplements and think those are steroids, or were simply lying on the polls.

Its important to know how the data was collected. We need to be certain the people knew what they where taking.

I had a friend right a paper for a college writting class on steriods. He asked me to read it over. No joke the first line was

“There are two main types of anabolic steroids, creatine and androstiendione…”

He said he didnt do any research just found and article on line and copied it.

My friend had a freshman at our school come up to him in the locker room, while my buddy was getting some Surge after his workout and said.

“Hey dont you know those are steroids? It says ANABOLIC on the bottle.” and no the kid wasnt joking.

So how many of these kids have taken andro or god knows what and filled out the survey thinking they took anabolic steroids.

If you listen to the news everybody is using steriods even my grandma. This is crap nine year old using. I guess I better hide my gear I my get beat up by a gang of nine year old girls with roid rage.

Notice the ambiguity in the term “steroids.” Perhaps what is being taken is your run of the mill perscription steroids for asthma? Who knows. Just a thought.

Hahahahah, that’s fucking hilarious.
