Saw Palmetto

many people use saw palmetto for prostrate problems and to combat hair loss as well. it has been shown that palmetto reduces the production of DHT, an androgenic by-product.

does anyone know if it reduces other adrogenic effects and if saw palmetto would have negative effects in the weight room?

I’m curious to know the negative of effects on libido and in the weightroom.

I work with a guy who was having prostate problems and he started taking Saw Pallmetto and noticed a huge difference in his piss stream etc. He is a large man, probably 6’4, quite a bit overweight and very sedentary. At about 1000mg’s a day he said it became very benificial. However, I have read a few negative things on the net about it effecting libido.

One negative that I know about is that it can hide an escalating PSA and possibly delay diagnosing a prostrate irregularity.

i wonder if this hints at an over all drop in testosterone levels.

does any body know of any studies?

Bump from the dead…

Curious on negative side effects of Saw Palmetto in regards to training and/or libido. I am considering taking it to try and control breakouts.

Hmmm… If saw palmetto indeed prevents the conversion of DHT, wouldn’t that mean a rise in free testosterone levels?

I took propecia for a few years - never noticed a bit of difference in the weight room or bedroom. I imagine everyone will have slightly different experiences with it. cheers.

I’m not sure why everyone says saw palmetto has a negative effect on libido…its actually used to help IMPROVE/INCREASE libido

Every man over 45 should be using a prostrate formula. I heard one idiot say he nevr heard any one dieing from a lack of saw palmetto. It called prostrate cancer.

Saw Palmetto has also been linked to increased cardiac problems. Specifically atrial fibrillation where the top part of the heart does not beat right/efficiently, but just sits and quivers. This can lead to blood clots forming, then being pumped throughout the body causing heart attacks, stroke, pulmonary emboli, and problems elsewhere whereever the clots ‘land’.

Well Im looking to take it to clear up acne, along with taking Fish Oil and Zinc (both of which have anti-inflammatory attributes).

But for some background, I’m only 21 so prostate health isn’t really my concern. Ive just read a lot about it in acne treatment, but I was wondering mainly if it could have a negative impact on my t-levels with regards to training.

Ive taken millions of anti-biotics and accutane once before. At this time, I am refusing to go back to that route.

Don’t know much about saw palmetto, but in terms of acne…

Have you tried removing as much refined sugar from your diet as possible? Bread, about all baked goods, pasta, cereals, soda, many sauces. Try to get the majority of your carbohydrate intake from fruits and veggies, with the exeception of around your training. What about removing as much dairy as well? Especially milk.

I think you are on track in terms of not going back to the accutane and the like. Highly anecdotal, but I can tell you from my personal experience the day I stopped using all the products you mentioned, as well as all of the other OTC med’s…my condition improved.

I actually went about treating it in the opposite way and moisturizing the areas as opposed to drying them out. It seemed to me as though the excessive drying out of my skin was actually making it worse.

Depending on how dry your skin is…you can use cocoa butter, or the johnson’s baby lotion w/ the light green lid(no added oils), and if you’ve got a girl…ask her to pick you up some lotion called PHILOSOPHY. They only sell it in those make-up type stores.

my 2 cents…

Recently, I tried toe www.acne.org “DKR” regimen of a gentle cleanser, benzyl peroxide, and a moisturizer. Didn’t do much good.

As far as carbs, the only refined carbs I consume is gatorade powder with whey PWO. Other than that its all natural breads, whole wheat pastas (occasionally), and fruit and vegges. I do enjoy pizza as a cheat meal… so I can’t say I’m completely eating clean.

As far as milk, Ive tried to go without dairy. Ive tried to just remove milk, milk and cheese, cheese, etc. Its hard for me. I do believe milk could be contributing but I have a hard time giving it up.

Trust me I know about the milk, I used to drink 50-75 oz. of milk a day as a convenient source of protein. Then one day I had a resting blood glucose reading of 294, and I was starting to lose some of my vision. Not exactly normal symptoms for a 28 year old who’s been training since I was a sophmore in college. Doctor’s nurse tried giving me med’s within 5 minutes of meeting me, something that definately doesn’t sit well with me. We are entirely too over-medicated as a country.

Being the critical thinker I am I did some (ok, ALOT) research and found a connection between cow’s milk and type 1 diabetes in infants, and figured it wasn’t much of a stretch it could be connected to the type II diabetes I was heading towards. Made the choice real easy for me! I keep that unopened bottle of pills they gave me around to remind me from time to time.

Now that I’ve gotten my blood sugar under control completely on my own the only dairy I have is the milk in my peri-workout shakes. I’m trying to eliminate it entirely, but it’ll have to do until I find a suitable replacement. Surge is not in my budget for now.

There is a site called notmilk.org I believe that outlines a case against milk/dairy products. I will give you that they are probably a little off their rocker and extreme. And I’m not ready yet to suggest removing dairy ENITRELY from one’s diet…but as is the case many times when someone bashes a particular item, I don’t seem them trying to turn around and sell you another product of their own in replacement of it.

Food for thought…no pun intended.

My only other suggestion would be to work on relaxation techniques…diaphramtic breathing would be a great place to start.

Dumptruck, very interesting. I assume the same goes for raw milk? What about cottage cheese/yogarts? Cheers, ~katz

This is the most absurd post that I’ve read on t nation in quite a while. There are no negative side effects with 320 mg of Saw Palmetto daily.[/quote]

hmmmmm…I wonder where alsrnbsn got this? Frightening if true.

when i was younger and im only 21 now so im talking 16,17 and 18 i took saw palmetto and noticed no… negitive side effects my libido is very strong and as far as strength in the weight room goes if anything at all it may have helped.
just my 2cents.

I use it and also employ the other thing many Docs are recommending…

Ejaculate

Man I wish all Doctors recommendations were this helpful to my marriage…

Mr Gabex: I was an Execuve Director of a Company that owned the distribution rights to a product called Biogime. For Men, the face cleaning product is a 4 bottle treatment that did wonders.

The problem with it is that the way to get the best use, is to have someosne demonstrate it for you. See if you can find a distributor, costs for a man’s kit is about $80.00. Get the demo video. It shows women using their kit, but it will give you the idea as to how to get the most out of the product.

I had a lady with many small scars on her face use it, she says the scars all but disappeared when she used the product. It works, just don’t tell your men friends that you are using a facial product or they will expect you to wear pink & yellow shirts.
