I watched this fight last night(haven’t had time til then). I was yelling at the screen for him to drop the leg and turtle up.
Amazing how he kept his cool threw that flurry.
I can not longer watch Sakuraba, Its heart breaking.
Sure Im happy he won, but he should retire.
He is the Greatest, but it is just sad, to watch him take so much punishment.
It did look like a very painful kneebar.
He’s a legend, no question, unbelievable toughness.
I wonder how long til he comes out completely mummified in joint wraps and tape?
I have to agree with a few of the other posters. He’s a great fighter and all but it’s just a little unnerving to watch him take that sort of punishment after what he’s already been through in his fight career. I think there’s a time when you should walk away. No one will think it cool when he’s sitting in a chair staring out a window drooling. Enough.
He is pretty mumified as is… with tape.
In the Pride days he used more- but its like vinyl contact paper almost- flesh toned

I agree with you guys about him retiring. He really has nothing more to prove. Hopefully he’ll take a couple more fights at his weight class (paired with someone actually IN the same weight class) and bow out.

I absolutely agree about what condition he will be in, and how that will be a shame, but when you have a burning passion for anything, I’m sure it can be difficult to give it up. And as much as I never want to see him like Ali, the guy is still a hero to me for being such an indomitable warrior. It’s like what one of you guys said about absorbing that kind of punishment and still going for a submission. It’s unbelievably inspiring and is already reminding me of what kind of pathetic things I allow to interrupt my own focus on putting things together.

Yeah, Eddie Alvarez was saying good things about it. Apparently it’s got a little more “bounce” than a conventional cage, due to the fencing being made out of the same material used on Japanese fishing trawlers, rather than steel.
Go Sakuraba! If that was UFC the ref woulda stopped it due to unprotected blows. But so far i’m liking the Dream’s ref’s.

Sakuraba was one of my heroes when I was first getting into MMA. Watching him take a beating to pull out a ridiculous victory was like a real life Japanese Rocky in orange briefs. But his fights are now hard to watch. I’m impressed that he can still do it. But he’s got nothing to prove. We all know he’s got slick submissions and a huge heart. If he retired tomorrow, I’d still think he was a pound for pound great and a warrior willing to take on any comers.
I mean, would anyone here face Wanderlei Silva 3 times knowing that he outweighed you by 30 pounds?
I just hope he doesn’t become the next Shamrock.
He is the man, its good that fight wasn’t in the U.S. because the ref. would have stopped it IMO. You guys are right, he has nothing to prove. I hate to see the man go much more, I’m sure he’ll feel it later down the road.

40 years old and he looks at least 55. Does he not have enough money to retire comfortably? I suppose it’s good he at least fought someone his size instead of a juiced up, monster LHW like in the old days.
