Any other RUSH fans out there?
Just got the new “Rush in Rio” Live CD. Wow!
These guys are amazing! And NO ONE plays an ax like Big Al!
I was (and still am) a huge fan of Rush’s “middle period”, which I define as “after they settled down a bit from all the wigging out that they did on their first few albums” to “before they got stale”. So, roughly, from about half of “Permanent Waves” to the first few songs of “Roll The Bones”. Everything in between was simply amazing, not a bad record considering that we’re talking about seven or eight full albums with only one or two weak songs in the entire bunch.
If I had to pick one rock album that would stand as the absolute best of all time, Moving Pictures would probably be it … and Hold Your Fire would make my Top Ten.
If their latest album is good, it’ll be a nice change of pace for them from the last decade or so though. I couldn’t even listen to “Test For Echo” all the way through… 
Oh, man, I’m listening to Signals right now! Great stuff. Counterparts wasn’t too bad either. But I agree, their “middle” period was best.
Char-dawg…you might want to check out “Vapor Trails”…their lastest studio album. It rocks!..much like Moving Pictures…

Quite possibly the worst music I’ve ever heard.
And I do mean THE WORST.
the worst music huh? matter of opinion for sure…but ask any hardcore rock musician about RUSH’s music. RUSH has inspired MANY people to learn to play a musical instrument. And…they never cared about being cool…the bands who were “cool” back then are non existent now…either because of death…drugs…burnout…etc…Whereas RUSH is still going strong after 30 years and MANY albums!

Big fan, always have been. Own Hemispheres and Signals on vinal. Celebrate the entire catalog on CD. I really dig Neil’s lyrical prowess. The Professor on the drum kit! Ofcourse, I am a drummer, it only makes sense that I like them.
Anybody own Neil’s Jazz albums? His tribute to Buddy Rich? I want to know how they sound…oh yea, and the name of the album too. Guess I could check amazon.
If you are interested in a chilling read, pick up the book “Ghost Rider”. It’s about him (Neil) and his motorcycle working through the death of his wife and daughter…Sad stuff, but enlightening.
Regardless of how you feel about the end product, the musicians in Rush are extremely top notch. A few quotes from the “All Music Guide” :

Funny you brought this up, you might be freaked out to hear that I used to train Geddy Lee. He lives in a suburb of Toronto and I used to train him in his house and on weekends we’d go cycling. He’s hugely into bicycle racing and is in awesome shape. One of the gyms I train out of is located directly across the street from a jazz/blues club called the Orbit Room that is owned by Alex Lifeson. I run into him all the time.
Isn’t the fat drummer dude the founder of Pearl drums or something or am I wrong. I’ll give Rush a 7 from 1 to 10
I’ve said this before, but it bears repeating: Neil Peart is the closest thing that rock music has to a Shakespeare. The lyrics during the middle period are really astonishing in their depth.
And for anyone who doesn’t like Rush, I’ll confess that I didn’t like them either when I first heard their stuff. Okay, I liked Tom Sawyer (everyone liked Tom Sawyer; it went to Number One), but aside from that one song I couldn’t stand them. You have to listen to them for a while to develop a taste for their kind of music. But once you do…
I always thought that Geddy Lee and Steve Perry were twins separated at birth. Just so similar looking. Cool that Geddy is into bike racing – had no idea about that one.

I used to love them a few years back. Now, the voice just wears on me. I can’t take it for too long.
I can definitely appreciate the musicianship though. Neil Peart is a bad, bad man… I heard about him doing this thing where he busts out the drum sticks, puts a dime on the wall and bangs away… the dime doesn’t fall. Pretty fucking sick.
