x2. Looking back, it seems like I am remembering someone else’s life. Like I have no real connection to those years or that person.

Great job grinding it out, j-willy. You really are a machine!

hey willy, quick question on complexes. the cosgrove article i read says to decrease 1 rep each set, so that’s how I’m starting out. I have seen other articles where you don’t drop a rep, you do the same each set.

I think you do straight sets, but I’m not sure. Do you know what the relative pros/cons are for the different ways? The only thing I can think of is that decreasing a rep each set would allow you to use bigger weights. I’d love to hear what you think about this issue

When I first started doing them I did them the Cosgrove way. I was limited by the amount I could press from my back to the front. I never felt like I was getting a ‘tough’ workout. Then my shoulder started acting up and I just couldn’t press much.

So my complexes morphed into a 2 bar set up along with the Smith machine for squats. I have found I can use more weights on my pulling and squats and then marked less for the OHP movement. I don’t know if the complex gurus would approve, but it seems to work for me.

I gave in and went to my 30th on my trip in the beginning of August and I must say I don’t regret missing all of them up to that one and I won’t make any effort to attend another. It seems that you either moved away or you got stuck in the 70’s never moving on… One person I’ll make an effort to see when I visit my parents. But I’ve kept in touch with him over the years anyway.

I went to my 20 year back in 2001. I had a good time. Only about 25 people showed out of a graduating class of 52 (small school). The neat thing was, the girls that were hot turned into women even hotter. I was the only one that got fatter. most everybody had jobs they could tolerate, and a couple were actually happy. Guess I was lucky.

Tuesday morning workout
Squats in the Smith: 135x20, 205x15, 220x8, 245x5, 265x5
Floor wipers: 3x10
Decline leg raises: sets of 20, 20, and 15

Typical squat day. I’m thinking of adding some goblet squats. Maybe get back into old school Zercher squats. Luckily the gym is empty at 5 am so I can make me a little zercher stand out of the step aerobic boxes. I need to work on some real squatting.

Just trying to keep things together up here in eastern NC. The daughter is upset I have to travel. The wife doesn’t like me being gone either. Between today’s economic times and the banks, it makes running our business extra challenging. I guess more than ever the iron is keeping me sane. I just hope I can continue to drive through all of this adversity and meet my underlying fitness goals. I seem to be faced with more and more challenges each morning. Many days I just want to lie in bed. I drag myself out and EVERY TIME I feel better because i went.

I’m thinking very seriously about changing gyms. It may be 4 miles farther and 9 stoplights more to travel, but I need to go somewhere I can really train.

JW’s morning thought: My wife says I have two emotions: Hungry and Horny. If she sees me without an erection, she makes me a sandwich.

JW - just getting yourself out to do it on a regular basis is a significant accomplishment in and of itself. You are probably the most regular person training day-in and day-out on this forum. If that other gym has a power rack and real weights, I’d say just go for it and you won’t regret it.

Getting to a new gym, where you have more equipment to work with and expand your workouts, can make them more gratifying. That, in itself, is worth the drive. Feeling like you’re progressing in any area will carry over to the rest.

How long are you going to be gone?

Couple of years back, I was supposed to go to California. When the wife and kids dropped me off at the airport, the wife and daughter were both in tears. Fortunately, the trip fell through at the last minute. I didn’t want to go anyway.
I have not spent a night away from them since my daughter was 7 weeks old. There kind of used to me being there…

JW, I agree with Soldog. You are the most consistant person on this forum. Glad your shoulders are feeling better.

Thanks Soldog, Eco, and LS. I dont know about how consistant I really am, but I’m trying like hell!! LS, I will be gone from Sept 19 to Oct 1. I hate the traveling too, but I guess it’s a part of my life now

Dammit… I overslept this morning

hate it when that happens

Could be the bodies way of telling you that you need a break…

I’ve seen your workouts. I would oversleep every day.

You needed a break. Have you had a de-load type week in awhile? An easy week every so often is good.

Thanks guys. I had a log night at home. Not a fun deal, just long. I plan to go in tonight for an upper body workout. Then I’ll be back at it in the morning. Ecom I’ll deload the last 11 days of the month, while I am in Asia.

Wednesday night workout

Rubber band dislocates: 15 reps
YTWL: 8lbs
Bench Press: 2xbarx20, 2x135x15, 185x10, 205x6, 245x1, 215x6, 255x1, 225x6, 265x1, 205x8
DB Fly: 30x12, 2x35x10
Rev. Grip incline CGP: 185x8, 195x6, 205x5
Rev. Fly: 3x45x8

Thursday morning workout:

Squat in the smith: 135x20, 205x12, 225x5, 4x245x5
Goblet squat: 3x65x8
Floor wipers: 3x10

My daughter started this season’s ballet so off I went to the gym Wednesday to make up for my lost morning workout. No one to spot me, so I benched using a wave rep cycle. What good it does I’m not sure, but it looks cool on paper. It was a simple chest workout. Nothing too remarkable other than the 205 cgp. Even that number is tempered because it was done in the Smith.

Friday I’m going to make the gym move. I’m going over to another town to a weigh lifter friendly gym. One of the officers of 100% RAW lifting federation plays a huge role in this gym. It has 24 hour access, so I can go in at the crack of dawn and train. I think this will make a huge impact on my strength goals. It will take a little longer to get there. In the long run that will pay dividends.

JW’s morning wisecrack reply to a discussion with the better half: If I agreed with you we’d both be wrong.

Friday morning workout

Rubber band dislocates: 15 reps
YTWL: 8 lbs
Tumminello’s Weight Plate Metabolic Circuit: 4 sets
Treadmill interval: 20 minutes

WOW… changed my complex today to the weight plate complex by Nick Tumminello. It is outlined in this article Strength Training, Bodybuilding & Online Supplement Store - T NATION . It kicked my ass, made me want to be a little girl dressed in pink, and I realized I had no testicles when I was done. The complex consists of 6-8 OH squats, 6-8 plate swings, 8-10 bent rows, 6 reverse lunges with a twist with each leg. and 6 chops to each side. I could handle the 45 lb plate for all the movements for the first 2 sets. By the 3rd and 4th sets I had to drop back to 25 lb plates on the chops. I was going to try a 5th set but I had to run to the locker room and puke out a testicle. DAMN these make my tortureplexes look like a cake walk.

I gathered my composure for a treadmill interval. I’m going to do these again!!

JW’s morning thought: Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak and remove all doubt.

Saturday morning workout

T-bar rows: 3x135x10
Lat pull downs: 3x140x10
Inverted hanging push up things: 3xBWx8
Chest supported row: 2x145x8, 145x6
Hies shrug: 3x285x12
Treadmill interval: 20 minutes

Nothing special about today’s back workout. I’m still at the old gym. I wont be able to join the new gym until Monday. The family and I didn’t make it by in time. Instead we went to the sushi joint… that’s owned by a Chinese family. I did get some good dining pointers if I am ever in Shanghai.

Off to take my daughter to her pottery class at the beach, then visiting the parents.

JW’s morning question: Where does the toe tag go if a dead person doesn’t have toes?

Damn, J_Willy, I just got the coffee brewing, wiped the sleep out of my eyes, and was planning out my morning workout and you have already posted yours. Good work!

I’m on my 3rd cup Jack. There is something I really enjoy about morning training. I dont know what, but I do enjoy it!

Sunday morning workout:

Bench press: bar x 20, 135x20, 205x12, 4x245x6
DB Incline Press: 3x60x10
DB flat fly: 35x12, 2x45x10
Rev grip incline cgp in the smith: 185x10, 205x8, 205x6
Rev fly: 3x50x8

It was a quiet Sunday morning in the gym. Just me the Ipod and all the TV’s. I’m not sure what was plying actually, I just know they were on. I still am working out with 80% of my max on my bench. Flys were light feeling so I bumped the weight some. CGP’s felt light, until I bumped to 205. THAT was a chore!! It sure felt fun!

4:30 came early today. I was worn out from visiting the parents and taking the daughter to her pottery lesson. I guess I’m OCD about training, I rolled out of bed and rolled on to the gym. Have a full day today. I guess I’ll move gyms when I return from China. I need a new direction and surroundings. While in China I hope I can develop a new plan. With my luck, probably not!

JW’s morning question: If a stripper gets breast implants can she write it off on her taxes as a business expense?
