Have the plates slide off the bar and you will never lift without clamps again!
As far as lifting alone, a power rack would be a wise invesment.
His point is, if you ever get trapped under the bar, having the ability to slide those weights off is a GOOD THING. Maybe some of you should simply learn to balance better.[/quote]
Hence the suggestion for the power rack for lifting alone.
Balance is not the only issue. I find it hard to beleive that in all your years of lifting you haven’t caught an upright or something.
I had someone run into the end of my bar once while benching and it threw it off kilter. If the plates had slide off things would have gotten ugly quick.
If the plates had slide off
For example: I go to the gym and am doing some clean and jerks in an open space where the military press rack ussually is. Normally the best spot is to do them behind the cage, but that was occupied by the military press rack because somebody was using it to do box squats with.
Well, after I do a few sets, I add some weight and sit down. As I’m sitting three feet behind the bar on a bench, I watch this kid and his friend take the m.p. rack and place it practically on top of the bar I was using.
After scratching my head in disbelief, I walked over to him and asked “Why’d you put that there?”
He responds,“Well that’s where it goes.”
I retorted," Didn’t you see me using that bar for clean and jerks?"
He says,“Oh, I’m sorry” and offered to move it.
I honestly don’t think he even noticed what he did. Funny thing is, I was about to kill him that day, and now I’m friends with him. Go figure.

People tend to not run into your bar if you look like you will run the bar into them.

I had an old dude actualy pull the pin out of the weight stack while I was doing leg curls. He pulled the pin out and my legs slammed the pad into the safetys. I got up and proceeded to curse him untill some of the staff came over to see what was up. I thought I was going to get kicked out (not the first time I’ve thought that). I was sooo mad, I could have killed him.

I’ve had this same thing happens to me the only difference was well I was staring at this guy (late 30’s early 40’s) he proceeds to cuse me out for dropping the weight well he was right next to them and that he was going to go get me kicked out. The only reason I was is I was staff at the gym and they knew me better than to do that.
And since I made a comment about the baby boomers gen I’ll also post one about my own. I’m going on the bench and just finish my 3rd set and a kid (16-17) walks up the bench I was using, the only one being used at the time and proceeds to strip my bar. I look at him and ask him what the hell he is doing. He just looks and said, “I’m working in and if u got a prob. I’ll whop your @ss.” I al most died at this comment. I’m only a few years older than he is but 6’1" 225 lbs against a 5’7" maybe 150 lb kid that thinks he is hot stuff. Just goes to show u have them everywhere and there isn’t anything u can do.

What did you do?
You know why he started stripping your plates? Because he probably never cleans his up and any unattended bar is fair game for these little prince kids.
In my gym all plates are to be cleaned up after every excersice. Only the kids and some adults (to a lesser degree) seem load up work out then leave them.
People are generally rude at the gym I workout. They fail to strip the bar after use, dont wipe the bench after a workout, stand hugging the db rack doing their fucking fancy curls. Pisses me off to no end…I usually hole myself in the squat rack. Considering that no one apart from me even goes near the rack I use it for benching, partial deadlifts, bent over and chins apart from squats.
Next time someone strips your bar and tell you they’re gonna beat your ass in the gym, just shove the bar down on top of them when they’re near the end of the set. Or just bump into it and get it out of the groove. It’d be hella embarassing to lose a weight onto your stomach and make you TU on yourself in the gym.
This subject, along with many others, is exactly why I’m writing a book entitled, “Why I Hate Society”. I’m hoping to be the first social worker to do so.
