Rousey vs Kaufman

Count Yoshida out dude. The guy entered MMA after two knee surgeries and a decent weight gain. Nastula may actually contradict your point since… well, look at his record. Thrown to the wolves. His fourth fight was with Barnett, and I distinctly remember him being a handful before the finish.

I think a big part of their lack of success was that they never developed their game enough to force their strengths on their opponents. This is certainly the case with Ishii, and less so with Nastula. Ronda does just that, though the point remains that she’s been helped along by the much lower talent ceiling in women’s MMA.

And damn is that ceiling low. I remember watching Cyborg vs Carano and gawking at the clinch/ground work. At one point Carano failed a sloppy trip and put herself in mount.

I agree with your point about the depth in women’s MMA but I hate this example. We all recently saw Sonnen try a move he saw on Power Rangers and trip in the process. The trip didn’t look like something that should have happened to a real athlete. Further, instead of either popping right back up or staying down where he could put on some defense, he backs himself against the fence leaving himself vulnerable to the devastating blow he got. My point is, such a dissection may not be fair.

Ah true, men in a championship fight can pull a Power Ranger as well.

In my defense though, that exchange was part of a series of sloppy grappling exchanges. Perhaps the pace they set was responsible, Cyborg did win the Mundials at purple belt which requires some sick newaza.

I put that in the “Chute Box style” category. Shogun has very good groundwork, but he can get put on his back fairly easily. Hell, Wand impressed me against Yoshida, but again he is susceptible to take downs.

On the other side of it, Rousey has shown a tendency to try to walk through shots. Doing that against Cyborg is a hell of a lot different than doing it against others.

The question I have is if Cyborg is off the funky juice is she still a physical beast?

She was bigger and stronger than everyone she ever fought to a scary point. Now that she needs to clean up is she still gonna steam roll girls.

That is THE biggest question for us all. Technically,Cyborg relies on lots of strength…she is far from technical. She is a brute…and we shall see how being clean affects that for sure.

Also, she and RR will probably end up agreeing on 140 so she will have to come in a little thinner. Btw, I’ve gone from thinking Cyborg would be too much for Ronda to now thinking Ronda will take her.

So, where does Ronda’s career go from here? I see her taking Cyborg then a rematch with Tate. After that is she just going to fight a bunch of rabble? Are there any worth while up and comers? Or, is she just going to go the way of Gina Carano and make movies or maybe the way of Leila Ali and do a little bit of this and a little bit of that?

Well…there…is…another…Olympian…decorated grappler in Sara McMann. She is 135…6-0. But she is tied up with Invicta FC right now. I guarantee she doesn’t get arm-barred…in…the…first round…lol.

I never thought of her as technically amazing Physically it was so one sided it hurt. She just ragdolled girls. Now hopefully she comes in clean and we get to see what she can really do.

Hmm, the flipside of that is that Cyborg in her last 4 fights at least, tends to get into clinching distance. So I guess it’s either she gets off first, and does enough damage going that Ronda goes defensive, or Ronda gets that clinch.

Another to consider is that the fight will be at 135 and drug tested, as per Rousey management (for now). 10lbs is a lot of weight to lose when you walk around at 145-160, especially for a lean body.

If she’s actually clean then I’m guessing she’ll have lost a decent a mount of muscle.

Haha it would be hilarious if Ronda said something like “It should be easy for her to get down to 135 once she’s off her fancy supplements”

she has lol

She did actually. Saw it on bloodyelbow. lol

I watched Eddie Bravo break this fight down on BJpenn.com. I have decided I can do a whole class on this one fight using your strikes to get inside and using your options from the takedown to secure an armabar. There was a whole ton of skills in that short fight. Very awesome peroformance.

Here is some more analysis of that fight.

I have a love hate sort of thing going with that guys analysis. I think he over analyzes a bit too much but that’s just my opinion. What made this fight awesome was how she initiated the clinch right away, that was straight Diaz brother style with the straight punches and getting Kaufman up against the cage. There are two videos breaking down the finish that are worth watching by Rener and Ryron Gracie and a separate one by Eddie Bravo.
