You guys are cracking me up with the pizza debate!
This is what I love about T-Nation; you open up a thread about Ronnie Coleman and you find yourself emerged into a passionate discussion about pizza.
Lovely!

…and I think many guys bulk up because it helps to build muscle mass as well. Why act as if that isn’t the case when many who gain more weight in the off season are the ones who make the most progress from one contest to the next? I mean, great, he said he doesn’t eat pizza. Dexter Jackson has said he does. Neither of them gain much body fat in the off season so what is it you have against pizza?
I may eat a pizza once every month or less but I am not quite getting what your point is. If it is about bulking up, pizza has little to do with it.
I posted a pic of Lionel Brown in the Bodybuilding picture thread. Not only did he bulk up last year, but he did better in his contest this year after dieting down with the added muscle size. So why shouldn’t he have done so again?
Did you read everything I typed?
Eating 500 extra calories of pizza might not be AS GOOD AS eating 500 extra calories of sweet potatoes, olive oil and lean beef with the same macro nutrient split.
That’s all.
If someone chooses pizza over that, fine. I just don’t like it when some people act like there were no better options, and would prefer if they admit that it was for taste or convenience. It might not hurt progress much, but there are better foods than the over processed, nutrient lacking pizza.
I didn’t mean to hit a sore spot. I’m not saying you didn’t reach great progress while eating pizza.[/quote]
There are other reasons to add some junk than taste. Meeting calorie goals is one. Especially for those with faster metabolisms. Perhaps it would be optimal to FORCE-FEED 100% clean and healthy food down your throat all the time. But especially for those that are really big and have very fast metabolisms that can be tough.
It’s a lot easier and less filling to get 500 calories from pizza that lean beef and sweet potatoes. Quicker too. If you’re in a rush and need 500 calories, it might be better to grab a few slices of pizza on some days than cook up sweet potatoes and lean beef. As long as the bulk of you intake comes from clean, healthy foods, a little junk could be very beneficial at times.
I couldn’t get through the whole interview but I started looking at the workout videos. That guy is as strong as he looks. 800lb dead. 800lb squat. What a freak and animal.

How on earth can anyone eat “a few slices of pizza”?
It needs to be consumed whole, and must containg all the main food groups; cheese, tomato sauce and extra cheese.
I find it amusing that people are scared that eating a pizza once in a while is going to lead to some slippery slope to obesity.
But aside from the pizza debate, I liked the Ronnie interview, the guy comes across as genuine and determined to win again, and I for one hope he wins his ninth title, instead of getting stitched up.

King of Kings
Great interview, it was great to see his insight. Interesting to hear him say how he can just “turn it on” when he goes into contest mode and instantly have the discipline to do what he needs to do to get into proper condition.
Any athlete can learn from this man’s dedication and discipline.

I agree…it’s like only having ’ a couple beers’.
It can’t be done.
Light weight baby!
Good interview seems like a nice guy.
