So I got the cortisone shot today and went to work… then left a few hours later because it hurt so bad. I think it is starting to feel better now so that is good. I hoping this will be an improvement… eventually.
I am hoping to do a lower body day tomorrow if my body cooperates with me. I have just been keep up with some cardio lately just to keep doing something in the mean time.
Sorry to hear about your shoulder. I messed mine up on a bad bench press. Sounds like you are in worse shape than I was. The first three videos that come up under this youtube search really helped me:
EDIT: Deleted messed up search URL… just search for "“Diesel Crew Shoulder” on YouTube.
It’s been about 18 weeks and I’m back to pressing about 80% of what I could before hurting my shoulder (with much better/safer form). I hope you get well soon too.
Meh. Sucks that your shoulder is acting up. Your lifts sound good tho - at least to a newb like me!
I just had a friend get a cortisone shot in his shoulder, apparently he had torn or stretched a ligament, something like that. But he got tons of relief. It took him a couple of weeks after the shot to get back into a full upper body workout tho and was still doing a lot of pre/re hab work.
how’s that shoulder feeling? i hope the shot is giving you some relief. i had one in my foot for a heel spur…meh…no help, even with 800 mg ibuprofen x3 a day! but i’m willing to try another because i’ve heard it can take more than one.
one word of caution if you do get fairly ‘instant’ relief. be careful of over-doing it because you aren’t feeling pain due to decreased inflammation. my grandma has had several in her hips. always feels better and starts running around then starts hurting again.
I did a light upper body day which I am not so pleased with b/c my shoulder started to get irritated but I suppose bench pressing isn’t called “taking it easy” though I go very light…
Bench Press 1x8x45, 1x8x95, 4x5x115, 1x8x95
T bar Rows 1x8x45, 1x8x65, 1x8x55
HS Iso Row 1x8x45, 1x8x80, 1x8x45
HS Iso Lateral Bench Press 1x10, 1x10x25, 1x10
I might be saying the name of this wrong
HS HIgh Row 3x8x45
Now I am going to take some Motrin and get ready to go to PT… this particular work out probably best not done directly before Phyisical Therapy…
I think the shot helped my shoulder though my neck is now the problem…
I have been told that squats may not be helping my neck… so I may have to decide to not squat heavy… not that I ever really got to but I mean I may just have to stay w/ really low weights… which will suck.
Squats 1x10x45, 1x10x95, 2x6x115, 3x1x95
SLDL 1x10x45, 2x8x95
I was there helping my Dad who has recently decided to join the gym. He has all sorts vertibral fusions and rods in his back so I was helping him find a routine that will work for him. Turns out he is really weak, lol.
You can try switching to front squats. I have to right now due to lower back and elbow problems (yes, elbow - I’ve developed golfer’s elbow from the way I hold the bar during back squats. Grrr. I just wish there was one joint in my body that didn’t bitch and moan.)
Good luck training your dad. I did that with my parents last summer; what I learned was, have them try out every exercise with just bodyweight before you hand them a bar. Middle-aged people can have surprising amounts of trouble with bodyweight squats.
Also, a particular experience with fathers.
Me: “Dad, this is the deadlift. You can do them this way [demonstrates conventional] or this way [sumo]. Some people like sumo better, often short people and women.”
Mom: “Shush! If you say women do it, he’ll NEVER try it.”
Alisa, my dad will never squat, lol. He has so many metal rods in his back magnets would probably be attracted to him. He is very limited but I am just trying to find things that don’t hurt him… it’s a challenge…
As for today I took my dad back and we both did upper body days, as for I did…

You and your dad are birds of a broken feather.
Maybe you need to try higher rep work…

Well he has really good reson to be broken. He has worked really hard his whole life and in his youth was amazingly strong. I have to say I owe my strength genes to him. I on the other hand did nothing and I am broken… woe
I should try goblet squats, I hear they’re great for warming up on squat days.
About the wrist wraps - I’ll look into it. I think my issue is more a matter of form, so I’m trying to correct it off the bat. But maybe if I still have the problem when the weights get heavier I’ll get them. Thanks for the rec!
