From the favourite movie list, I saw a lot of people post “Rocky” and the sequels to it. I always wondered how Rocky beat that Russian, I mean, it seems impossible. If Rocky had been the type to juke a jab, and throw one to hit due to his quickness and agility, it might be possible but still far-fetched. The Russian had over 1000lb punch force AND he used steroids. What do you guys think?
Because he got paid more money. The same reason fat cops chase down the bad guy on TV
Rocky trained renegade style while the russian used primarily machines in his training. that was the ONLy difference. and Dragos punching power was measured at 2250 lbs per square inch.
It’s all about the desire to win. Don’t you remember that cheesy “gattaca” movie from a few years back, when everyone was genetically engineered, and the hero wasn’t, but he had such immense desire, that he succeeded anyway? I think the slogan was something like “There is no gene for the human spirit.” Anyways, Stallone got the idea for “Rocky” when he watched Chuck Wepner fight Ali. Wepner was totally overmatched, but he managed to go the distance, and Stallone was so inspired that he ran home and wrote “Rocky” in a month. or so the story goes. Personally, I think the original was the best story of all of them, but the money to be made was just too much of a temptation. Let’s face it, after “Rhinestone Cowboy”, and other such duds, Stallone knew that he always had a proven formula to go back to.
In real life though, soviet boxers seldom used machines in training. Body weight exercises, medicine balls, free weights and kettlebell were popular.
Drago was shown to be training with heavy Clean & Jerks (actually, the way the movie portrayed it, it looked more like a clean followed by a slow military press).
Out of interest what is a typical heayweight’s punching power per square inch?
If anybody wants to go head up with me on Rockys thats cool. Ive seen each one about 69 billion times. I can quote along with them the whole time in each movie. He did do a clean and jerk. That was the only free weight exercise he did. And it looked like he was doing it more as a show than as a training exercise. Notice however how the Russians where ahead of the times as they included rotator cuff training in his program.
Rocky 4 was seriously an anti-russian / pro american propaganda movie. in reality if anyone trained like rocky they would not have any possible hope to beat the ‘evil’ russian. some of the shit he did was crazy tho like power cleaning the wagon and doing hanging sit-ups from a barn. And of course our hero can’t use steroids…that would be cheating…
I have an impression that you think that what was shown in the movie actually reflected the real life situation. Do you really think they knew howelite soviet athletes trained at the time, and then would put that in the movies? Don’t believe everything you see on tv and read in newspapers.
I thought it was funny when Drago was doing his clean and press because: 1) He was wearing gloves, no self-respecting Soviet athlete would be caught dead using them. 2) The weights themselves were metal not bumper-plates as would be the case. 3) The weight he is lifting appears to be in excess of 500 lbs. To my knowledge only Ken Patera and Vasily Alexeyev ever pressed this much and that was early 70’s. Pretty goddamn good for a boxer. The other thing that was funked up was they measured the punching power of Drago in pounds when it should be in kilograms since they use the metric system. I know its just a movie but they could have put a LITTLE bit of reality into it.
I bet watching movies with you is a blast. i bet you sit there the whole time saying, “this isnt real”. Every party has its pooper and thats why we invited you. good lord. i bet pro wrestling is fun to watch with you too.
Have not seen Rocky iv in several years. I think in the movie someone stated that the average heavyweight could hit with around 750 pounds of force. So Drago could hit approx. 3 times as hard as most heavyweights. I did not see the movie as anti Russian so much as contrasting Drago’s high tech, cutting edge training to Rocky’s old school style. Remember, he did that also in part 3 in his training for the first fight with Clubber being in a swank hotel and for the second going back to the old fashion dungeon with Apollo.
that is the underlying theme in all rocky movies. the one that trains with free weights wins!
If you’re going to pick everything apart - the thing I found most amusing after the first time I watched the Rocky movies was the boxers’ lack of ability to block hits. Seems like they never even attempted to use their hands to deflect a punch, they would just let the other man beat 'em repeatedly in the face! You just have to think of how many ‘1000lb’ punches Rocky’s face took in that fight against Drago and he still managed to live. What a man.
IT’S JUST A FUCKING MOVIE!!!
Are there still people who watch pro wrestling?
Or worse yet, are there people who really think that pro wrestling is real?
there are still people who watch wrestling but its no fun to sit there with someone who talks about how fake it is the whole time. same with movies. you cant get into a movie if the person beside is saying, “its just a movie”.
Why does everything have to be a serious discussion? Its just a movie? No fucking shit shirlock. goddamn people have some fun. How bout the fact that in Rocky IV when apollo is fighting the drago, there is a short clip when he first gets in the ring where he doesnt have gloves or tape on his hands. Or in Rocky III Rocky is having a flash back to when Clubber beat him the first time but it shows the trunks he wheres in the second fight. Hows that for ruining the movie?
Pro wrestling may be fixed but it aint fake. If you don’t believe that, ask Mick Foley how he felt after his hell-in-the-cell match with the undertaker.
