Rock Songs for a Beginner Drummer

To start, look for ‘pocket drummers’ – Anything by Parliament-Funkadelic, like “Up for the Down Stroke”.

AC/DC is the perfect band to learn drumming to. Phil Rudd is the epitome of the rock ‘pocket drummer’.

If you like blues/rock-a-billy, learn a shuffle. Everybody on the blues and country (rock-a-billy) circuit looks for a drummer who can do a G’damned shuffle correctly.

Single or double pedal on the bass drum? I’ll second playing to Led Zeppelin. But like Chip said, you should play along to your favourite songs. Always try and play stuff that’s slightly beyond you, but not so difficult you get lost completely. Have some kind of progession, so you’re moving on to more difficult material each time you master a new song.[/quote]
Single.

Thanks guys, this is really helping me out and exactly what I was looking for.

Thanks for the tip SD. Didn’t really know what a shuffle was but after some youtube, I can play that easily.

Some of the first songs I played when I got my drum set were…

“New Sensation” INXS

“Devil Inside” INXS

“Dude Looks Like a Lady” Aerosmith

“Nothing Else Matters” Metallica

“Money Talks” ACDC

“Thunderstruck” ACDC

“Girls Girls Girls” Motley Crue

“Nothin’ But a Good Time” Poison

I got my set back in the late 80’s, so before you flame me take that into consideration.

Dude, stop bragging about going to prison already…fuck.

(I’m being sarcastic, just so you know)

I second the White Stripes - good beginner tunes.

3 Sets of “Sad But True” from Metallica.
Play “Moneytalks” by AC/DC Twice
Follow up with “Sex Type Thing” by Stone Temple Pilots. Do this 5 times a week. Get drummer muscles.

Wanna rock n roll by Cross Canadian Ragweed

Not 100% perfect analogy, but well said

Amen to that, if I were able, I would sound proof a room and put a kick ass Tama set with some Zildjian cymbals in it. Rock Band isn’t bad, but just doesn’t compare.

If I had the money, it’d be one of these: http://www.kumu.fi/english/index_english.html

I agree anything by AC/DC for sure its a basic 4/4 beat once you have that down you can play along with mostly any song. Work on that a bit then try playing along with some of your favorite songs and just keeping the right tempo

No I would stick with a TAMA any day.

Why aren’t you going to get lessons? Do you not respect the art enough to learn properly, or you just a lazy ass?

Why would I even answer you with such a hostile comment (fuck face)?

John Bonham never took a lesson in his whole life. I guess he didn’t respect the art of rock drumming. Neither did Ginger Baker. Guess he didn’t respect it either.

Some people can learn without lessons, I learned a couple instruments that way. No one says you need lessons, although you would probably learn faster.
