Rob's 2017 Contest Prep Thread

Absolutely! It’s played a significant role. Especially the deeper into a prep, recovery/cortisol/phyislca stress can really have a negative impact. Last year was horrible, waking up at 4:30am to do 45-60min cardio before work, then going to work, sleeping terribly for a few hours a night, it was really rough. This year, being able to work from home, still get an adequate amount of sleep, relax as needed during the day, has definitely been a game changer and extremely helpful. In addition to that, having this be my second year, we really hit the ground running. I started my prep this year much leaner, was able to handle way more carbs with way less cardio than last year, so all of those things have a cumulative effect. We learned that physical stress management is really important for me, also why we stopped HIIT a few weeks ago and stuck with lower calories and additional LISS.

Damn straight brother, I’m with you! That’s the attitude I have going in, another reason I’m glad I went to that posing workshop, looking confident and commanding on stage is an important part of it. I definitely plan on taking what’s mine. If it works out it’ll be quite a celebration. If not, I can still walk out with my head held high knowing I did everything I could. Either way, I’ll have a huge smile on my face when we get to Cheesecake Factory

LAST KETO DAY in the books baby! Just a few more hours, a protein muffin, and then I wake up to egg whites, ketchup, proats with granola and cereal.

Today felt better than the last 3, I think because I was busy taking care of logistics, getting ready for the show and focused on what I have to do over the course of the next two days. Prepped my food for tomorrow, got my show food bags packed, ran through my routine a few times, cleaned up the house (always like coming home to a clean house after the show), another layer of Pro-Tan, and ready to rock.

Tomorrow will be another fun and busy day. Carbs all day, polygraph in the early afternoon, pack my clothes, etc., and two more layers of Pro-Tan. Since I’ve been to this venue before, I know we’ll be situated in the hallways. So I’m bringing a folding camping chair and yoga mat so I can sit, and primarily will be laying on the floor with my feet up. Also have my own mirror to check conditioning and vascularity throughout the day, so we can know if I need more food, stay topped off, more sodium/water, etc.

Logistics for Saturday:
7:30am - wake, breakfast
8:30am - leave for show
8:45am - arrive
9:00am - competitor check in, with competitor meeting somewhere between 9-11. Basically just going over the show format, making sure everyone knows the poses expected of them, etc.
11:00 - PREJUDGING BEGINS! Men’s bodybuilding is on last in the order of events, so I’m assuming I’ll be on stage somewhere between 1-2.

INTERMISSION - family will go out to eat, I’m gonna hang back at the school so I can stay laying down with my feet up, relax and focus.

6pm - Night show starts. Everyone does their routine, then they bring out each class, announce the winners, and they compete for the respective class overalls.

I’ll update as much as possible over the next couple days, and I know @The_Mighty_Stu will be posting some pics and updates from the show.

As much as Rob KNOWS how much work he’s put in, as much as he knows that he has completely transformed his physique from just a year ago, I can guarantee that he will also always know that he can still improve. This is the quality of a champion, and is something that has a hell of a lot more to do with having heart than some magic training program or a coach that is a wiz with macro shuffling.

Rob’s heard plenty of my own war stories, about how even when I knew that I had done everything humanly possible going into a show, I still stood backstage, eyeing the other competitors and convincing myself that they were still better and that there must have been something I missed… That’s the attitude that keeps you striving and continually improving. Rob’s still a (relative) newb to training, and this is only his second season competing. As impressive as he looks, and as much as he has already accomplished, I have no doubt he’s still got plenty more in the tank.

Damn proud of you brother.

I would wish you good luck, Rob…but you’ve put in the work, you’ve given your heart, you’ve given up sleep. You’re going to do amazing – and I can’t wait to read the reports that will confirm my predictions.

You’re amazing and you’ll perform amazingly!

1 DAY OUT! 139.4 pounds - new prep low.

Just had the most incredible breakfast, it’s hard to explain how happy I felt eating it.
-3/4 cup egg whites w/ a little ketchup, lots of hot sauce (gotta keep the sodium coming today!)
-1 serving cold oats
-chocolate cashew butter granola
-banana smashed in

Gonna enjoy the rest of my foods today, get some work done, polygraph at 1pm at the host hotel about 20min away, then my pump workout in the gym later. Also gonna do a few short posing sessions today as I feel posing really tightens me up, and helps get the carbs where I want them.

Sidenote, my wife is truly incredible. Yesterday she comes home from work, having made a pit stop at the grocery store, and man, she stocked up on all my favorites for after the show. All sorts of healthy crunchy snacks, variety of protein bars, various Halo Top and Enlightened ice creams, the works. Also got my favorite “normal life” foods for me to get back into next week. Just the thought of having some toast on my Dave’s Killer Bread with fat free cream cheese and jelly is so exciting. After a prep, eating normally feels like a feast.

My dad is bringing some of his signature cookies to the show, my mom is bringing some of her world famous challah french toast for me and @joshbenjamin. Challah bread is a Jewish tradition, it’s basically kosher potato bread shaped like a braid. Made into french toast, it’s pretty dangerous. I’ll have a nice variety of foods to enjoy post show!

For now, just trying to stay calm and focused on what I have to do today. It feels like there’s a ton to do but there’s really not, just gotta make sure my mind is right for tomorrow.

Feeling good, 5 meals in me so far. Did a couple rounds of posing today, it feels great, not strained at all, and filling out nicely. It’s crazy on the carb up day, I wait for it for so long, and every time it comes around I always feel like I’m eating too much! But, stick to the spreadsheet, trust the process, and wake up tomorrow morning to hopefully see everything come together.

Most of my meals have been my pre workout cakes topped with cereal. This latest creation I changed it up a bit, and put chocolate rice puffs in the cake, then microwaved, then topped with more cereal. Just as tasty as it looks.

Got my third layer of Pro-Tan on earlier, one more later tonight and I’m good to go.

As this is my fourth show, I feel pretty calm and have everything ready, almost too calm and it makes me feel like I’m forgetting something or should be more anxious about things. But, all the work is done at this point, I went over my checklist and have everything packed, only thing left to do is make a bunch of egg whites for tomorrow.

Breakfast tomorrow will be egg whites w/ a little hot sauce, a banana and some granola. After that, I’ll be doing rice cakes with nutella topped with a little salt, or rice cakes with creamy almond butter and honey topped with a little salt. Egg whites on hand in case I get hungry. Also have assorted goldfish grahams, swedish fish and jelly beans if I need a quick shot of some sugar.

I’ll be sure to post some pictures first thing in the morning, after Stu will probably be doing most of the updates during the day. There is a good length intermission where I’ll update if I can, priority will be keeping my feet up and relaxing, hopefully getting ready for the overall judging.

I would like to say thank you so, SO VERY much to everyone who has followed along this year and/or last year, for all the support, motivation, encouragement, comments, if you’ve been following along silently, it just really is awesome to feel such a great sense of support and community here. This log has been very therapeutic for me, and I’m so glad that it seems to be interesting and helpful to a lot of folks. Words truly can’t express how much I appreciate all the encouragement I’ve received on here, it means quite a lot and I’m very grateful for it. Also want to throw out a huge thank you T-Nation, because without this website and the resources it offers, I wouldn’t have gotten into bodybuilding and probably wouldn’t have even gotten into the gym.

Hope to bring back some good news tomorrow, but either way, it’s been a hell of a journey!

SHOW DAY BABY! LET’S DO IT!

Feeling great, got a lot of sleep last night, ready to rock. For breakfast I had egg whites with hot sauce, a chocolate rice cake with almond butter and some granola. Got my salt with me in my show bag to keep the sodium and carbs coming, making sure to have some water with each meal to get the water+carbs+sodium in the muscle.

Excited, pumped, motivated to show my hard work on stage and make a serious impression, returning to what was my first show last year after a year of hard work.

And awaaaaaay we go!

Checked in this morning and this thread has a funny smell to it.

It’s the smell of napalm in the morning.

Bring it home Brother!!!

I thought it was the smell of pro tan and a bunch of people who hadn’t showered in 3 days.

Intermission right now, it’s a long one so just relaxing in the hallway with my feet up.

Prejudging was solid, I felt confident on stage and brought my best. I was in the middle for most of it, looking in the mirror back stage I felt I was as tight and filled out as I could have been. Had a blast on stage! I woke up tight but a little flat, I made sure to heavily salt my last few rice cakes, kept the water coming, and had a big spoonful of creamy almond butter, honey and salt before the stage, did some isometric squeezing and the salt went to work almost immediately. Filled out very nicely. I also popped a 200mg caffeine pill about 30min before prejudging, that really helped my mindset, I felt laser focused out there.

Unfortunately there’s a smaller than usual turnout this year, typically every year there are enough competitors for a pro card, this year there aren’t. There need to be 8 competitors to award a pro card, there are 6 bodybuilders here today. I was initially slightly bummed that there’s not potential for a pro card, but ultimately it doesn’t matter. It doesn’t change the work I did or the physique I’m bringing, I’m just as proud and worked just as hard on stage. So, just enjoying the day and still hoping for the best tonight! The winner does get a photo shoot at the owner’s studio tomorrow morning to be featured on the show poster for next year, so that’d be a blast and great opportunity for sure. Fingers crossed.

After pre judging slammed some water, Reese’s trail mix and egg whites, looking even tighter and fuller now than I did this morning. Gotta resist the urge to eat my face off right now, just gotta stay topped off tonight for my routine and the overall.

Having a great time, everyone is very friendly and the day is all about enjoying the new friendships, meeting new people and celebrating killing yourself to get here. Will keep everyone updated for sure!
