Doesn’t appear to be a fast lane as there are turning lanes, just the left lane.
Isn’t the left lane considered the “fast” lane? IMO the person filming was being as big of a jerk as the tailgater. Once you’ve passed whoever you are passing, get over. It’s like she (sounded like a woman when she laughed at the end) was trying to force this guy to drive a certain way; it’s not her job. And, laughing at someone else’s misfortune makes her even more of a douche.
This. Growing up I remember seeing signs on the highway that said “Slower traffic keep right”.

The left lane is a passing lane, unless there is an exit you plan to use. I have had people tell me that they think as long as they are driving the speed limit, they can drive in whatever lane they want and you have to go around them.

Not only that, but it’s a common courtesy issue. if someone is coming up on you from behind in the left lane, move over. There are lots of people who will intentionally sit there and feel you should go around them. Even when they are sitting right next to someone in the right hand lane, they maintain speed and you’re stuck. They know it, and it sucks they just sit there knowing they are being discourteous to someone while in the safety of their own vehicle. It’s weak.

As you said, it’s them trying to control how you drive. Same thing with people driving 10 under around town. They won’t speed up for you because “why should I speed up for you and drive how you want me to?” Very hypocritical since they are forcing you to drive how they want, and you can’t do jack about it.

Dude in the truck was over the top for sure, and after he passed, everything that happened was his fault. But the person filming KNEW she was pissing him off and continued to disregard “unwritten” rules of the road to do so for the sake of a good video.
No. The left lane is the passing lane on interstate and typically highway and this appears to be in the middle of town. She has no obligation to leave the left lane especially since at the end of the video she appears to be making a left hand turn.
When you say obligation, are you implying a legal one?

I wouldn’t say it’s “the middle of town” judging by the over all lack of businesses I see. Mostly some residences among large portions of trees, which can be seen on many highways. Highways generally run through different levels of “town”. I admit the overall video doesn’t give you a good look of the roadside. Anyway…

I said what I did in agreement with Dr J that she could have just moved over and let him pass. It’s common courtesy, IMO, many obviously disagree with this sentiment as evidenced through every day driving. Unless, as you say, they are preparing to make a left.

Was she making a left turn, or used the opportunity that a left turn lane was right there to stop and get one last shot of the disaster to top off the video? We’ll never know. But, as Dr J said, the fact she laughed after it was all over sorta leads me to believe it was the latter.

Normally I would agree with you, but this was originally posted on Reddit, and the person who took the video explained that there were 2 tractor trailers in the right lane, so there was no where for him to go until he passed them. The guy who crashed was pissed that the guy wouldn’t pass the trucks going like 85 or whatever he wanted to do and so he then proceeded to make a big show of flipping this dude off. Also the cameraman mentioned seeing the truck passing people dangerously a few moments before this even took place.
Oh, I’m not defending the guy and It was obvious he was an ass. However, when you have a lunatic behind you, instead of shooting video WHILE DRIVING and escalating his lunatic-ness, just throw your blinker on and slide to the right after you pass the trucks.

She could have very easily been caught in that mess all because she wanted to get some footage of him raging with his finger in the air instead of just letting him pass on by on the left.

Even the cops don’t want slower traffic in the left lane…

Complete agreement with your points. Good posts. I take a 7-lane freeway to and from work everyday. Invariably there are people who camp in the left lane. Whether they are ignorant (and there are some) or feel like they need to be the traffic cop, these people make life miserable and dangerous. It causes those who want to go faster to have to pass on the right. These lane changes are what introduce danger where there should not be any.

I am at the point where I am actually considering an electric car for the sole purpose of free access to the HOV lane. It won’t solve the problem entirely as there are plenty of lane campers there as well. But it should be better. Deep down I don’t want to do this as I love driving my gas-guzzling high powered sedan.

We should consider some European style driving rules. If you are caught camping in the left lane we would fine and or suspend your license.

If there were a “Like” button, I’d like this.

Also, after going back and looking at the video again, it’s almost 50 sec before the person in the video gets far enough up to even see the back end of the first truck. Knowing now that this person posted this to Reddit and explained they already knew he was reckless and had witnessed it previously, they certainly could have slowed a bit and got BEHIND the truck to let him pass.

Instead, they sat there at the ass end of the first truck for the better part of a minute shooting video of a guy they could have completely avoided any real interaction with.

Edit: Actually at the very first of the video for a second you see the tail end of the truck. Then, almost as if the person slowed down intentionally, it’s not until almost 50 sec do you see it again. Even after the camera pans left where you would expect to see it if they had simply maintained speed.

This person WANTED to get a good video based on his previous actions and It seems there was at least some intent to get a desired response.

A state trooper pulled me over one time and had me on radar at 90 some, maybe 93. As we were talking he told me that anything less than 80 and they don’t even look twice. That was in a 55 mph zone.

On another roadway I thought I was getting lit up at mid 80’s when the cop passed me and went for a guy going a good bit faster.

It depends on the cop and the road way.

Well ya this is reality of course. It doesn’t change the English language though. Maybe I don’t know what limit means…

Nothing i hate more than left lane campers on the highway. You are an asshole if you do this. Fuck you, and fuck your vigilante effort to enforce a draconian speed limit. I understand if there is heavy traffic, or around town and all the lanes are full; but move the fuck over on the highway if there is room. It’s just common courtesy, and not being an asshole to fellow drivers.

My favorite is when they speed up as you pass them in the right lane. Makes owning a decently fast car that much more enjoyable.

I’ve heard that nickles work well when dealing with tailgaters…

It’s more of an existential issue: If a limit exists but no one is there to enforce it…

It’s not the responsibility of the commuter to enforce this limit though.

Someone wants to speed, move out the way, let them get ahead of you and then merge back to go at your own pace.

The force is strong with this one.

Nickels? Marbles and ball bearings?

Hell, why not just throw a banana peel out the window?

Are you saying you always drive at the speed limit and no faster?

Im confused. When I driving on the NJ Turnpike for instance, I am generally in the left lane, generally if traffic allows am going 80mph, but if some dick is on my ass when I am going 80 in a 65, I am supposed to move over for him?

If he is trying to go 90, and youre going 80… Exactly who is being the “dick” in this instance?

Over here, that would be expected.

The fast lane is like a free for all, you go whatever speed you want but when some guy wants to go faster you move out the way.

He is hence me calling the imaginary driver a dick. I would be the dick if I was going the speed limit or slower in the left lane. Going 80 in a 65 is not camping out. Especially when the road I speak of has troopers everywhere.

That’s different if there is no speed limits then fine

No, there are speed limits.

This isn’t Germany with the Autobahn.
