Rise Of The Slaya 2019- Next Strongman Comp prep and fixing my hip

Only thing I would say you need for strongman would be a good set of straps.

That’s true. I dont know how much growing i have left do though… i havent grown in a while :frowning_with_open_mouth:

I have some cheap figure 8’s i got for like $5 :joy: I’ll see how long these can last.

The only thing I was going to add to Cam’s list is the straps, and Pwnisher beat me to it. I have everything Cam has, except instead of Oly shoes I have Converses, and I’m too old to do the backwards hat thing, and I upgraded from girlfriend to wife.

Of all of that, the most benefit was definitely with the belt and straps. Figure-8 straps are awesome if you’re lifting in a competition that allows them, but I think that’s hit or miss, so if you’re not sure you’ll get to use them, just go with a good regular set of straps.

Two other things: I love my lever belt, but if I were to buy another belt it would be a normal buckle belt, because I need to set my belt at a different position and tightness for carries than for deadlifting, and it’s a pain to adjust the lever belt tightness on the fly. Also, eventually I’ll want to get some sort of better traction shoes for pushing/pulling events, like rock climbing shoes, but that’s further down the road for me.

You’re never too old for a hat!

I have never even used regular straps. Only figure 8’s so far. Whats a good brand for straps?

Alot of strongmen/ strongwomen wear a soft belt for carries and stuff. Whats the difference between that and a lever for carries. I really hated using a lever today for carries so i ended up taking it off. (Still needs breaking in + i suck at using a belt etc etc)

Im sure you could get dirt cheap rock climbing shoes

I don’t know, I still only have my figure-8s.

I’m not an expert by any means, but I have to wear the belt looser and lower for carries, or I can’t breath. Heck, breathing while doing carries is hard no matter what, and the belt makes it even harder if it’s too tight or too high, in my experience.

How low are we talking exactly? Today i had it relatively low but i dont think it was low enough. My breathing already sucks with carries but man it was fucking up my carries using the belt today

Along with this, it tends to push the object further out, unless you can rest it on your belt. I find it better to go beltless.

It helps for yoke carries, but for something you carry in front of you I’d definitely bow to Pwnisher’s greater experience here. I know I haven’t found a way to make it work for me with the Zercher yoke carries I’m doing to prep for the Conan’s wheel.

Everyone’s a little bit different, but when I was doing yoke carries for the last competition I was in, it helped me brace my core a lot if I wore it down almost at my hips, and loose enough that I have to push out a little to get tension, which gives me more room for lung volume. For max effort deadlifts I wear it almost up at my rib cage, but I also have a little hitch at the bottom of my thoracic spine and this stabilizes it for those lifts. I almost never squat with a belt.

Ah, when we were saying carries, I assumed we meant load in arms, like a sandbag or keg. I just call yoke “yoke”

That makes sense. In my mind, anything where you walk while carrying something translates to loaded carry, but then strongman is relatively new to me.

Depends on the implements you have access to train with. I’d echo the belt and straps sentiment. I have a few different straps. It’s totally redundant, but I like to use Olympic style straps most of the time, and only occasionally using figure 8’s or larger more traditional straps.
For your belt issue, I’d recommend just turning the belt around if you feel it helps with your carries.

Well it depends on the kind of carry/ implement.
For farmer’s walks it definitely helps ne stay stabile and focus less on my breathing. I know that some people don’t like it and prefer a lighter support, like a neopren belt.
For yoke I think it is stupid to not use a belt.

For front carries like sandgbag, keg and so in, I personally just go beltless. I tried it with a belt nunerous times but prefer beltless.

Looks like I’ll just go beltless for anything front carry related

I havent done yoke yet but I’m doing some yoke this friday. Yoke looks like one of the most complicated implements along with circus db

Lets just say almost all of them. :ok_hand:My gym’s very well equipped. It’d f****** wanna be for the membership costs lmao

Why do you prefer olympic style straps to figure 8’s?
I’ll try the belt turn around thing.

Ya i can imagine why yoke beltless would be stupid. Since its on your back and if you’re not very tight, Itl fold you in half and you could fuck yourself up??

I tend to not even breathe on farmers walks or any other carry because i immediately lose brace. @OTHSteve told me to breathe through the diaphragm but I haven’t mastered it yet.

Nah, not complicated at all: it just sucks. Once you get a feel for it, you just have to learn how to move fast and not die. CDB, on the other hand, is evil.

I must be a weirdo because i love zercher carries so I’ll probably like yoke as well. I’m glad CDB isnt in novice comps around where i am. I mean it could be but I’ll hope not

There is no liking the yoke lol The worst is when you haven’t done it for a while and come back to it.

I usually go in with the intention of a first session of 5x30m at 50% of wherever I left (I try get in a 15m run - so 50% of a 15m run)

This always leaves me hating life and it takes about 4 weeks to go from truly miserable to awful lol

For yoke, the belt goes on at 150kg for me. It used to be 180kg and 200kg before that - these weights are where I felt a tweak warming up with no belt haha

Now im scared of yoke walks :joy:

Is the yoke worse than prowler pushes?

The belts going to go on immediately for me then, i mean i have no clue how much i can yoke but the yoke weighs 75kg standard, and id imagine you could easily yoke walk double -Triple what i could.

Holy shit!! Just treated myself to grass fed steak. Best steak I’ve ever had… tastes wayy better than normal steak. How can i ever eat normal steak again lol

You’ll be okay, my back is just cactus. I don’t think it’s straight anymore :worried:

What have you done to the poor back? :frowning_with_open_mouth:
