If things go right, I should get my bachelor’s spring of '07. So, I need to start on my masters summer of '07. I am planning on moving to kansas city, and working as a jailer till I turn 21. The only two universities that I can think of in KC are friends and UMKC.

I would have to pay out of state tuition at UMKC, and Friends doesn’t offer the degree I need. I have been looking at online universities, and there are a lot of options. However, I am fearful that I might go to all the trouble and spend all the money to get a degree online, and then end up getting a degree from a college that isn’t worth a nickel.

I was wondering if anyone here has gotten a degree online, from a univeristy that isn’t some fly by night rig.

you might be better off waiting a year and establishing residency in Missouri…then go to a real school…

Go to a real school. Online schools are a joke, especially compared to real ones.

I can’t establish a residence in missouri, to be a policeman in kansas, I have to live there.

What kind of program are you looking for? I’m working on my teaching degree through Western Governors University. It is a highly accredited university and is much different than other online schools. If you have any questions, PM me. The website is just www.wgu.edu Good luck!

I would agree that there are some shady online schools out there, aka diploma mills, however; there are some really good ones as well. I have my undergrad from National University and did it all online.

Classes are very intense and I learned more there then I ever at a “traditional” school. Much like anything else, shop around and check everything out before you decide.

Many traditional schools offer online degrees, also. I know both Boston University and Florida State offer master’s degrees in criminal justice via distance learning (assuming you’re pursuing a CJ degree).

Arizona State University offers Masters Degrees online.

I actually need a masters in public administration. I will check out the WGU, thats halfpint. I will also check out national and arizona state.

I take some online classes from washburn, but I also go to traditional classes. I prefer traditional classes, becuase the instructors teach. In most online classes, the book does the teaching, and I hate that. However, You all know that I don’t wait around, and an online degree would help me get my masters quick.

I would look into these traditional brick and mortar schools, that also offer fully online courses:
Florida State
Arizona State
Nova Southeastern

Those three all well respected and have multiple online programs. Why do you “need” an MPA (masters of public administration) if your goal is to work in law enforcement? A Masters in Criminology or Criminal Justice is just as good for most people.

Who cares if you get your masters and it is from a crappy place? Doesn’t mean anything then.

I have an associates in police science, and will have a Bachelors in Criminal Justice. My mentor and my boss are both cops, one is a state agent and the other is a police chief. Both of them have told me that once I get my undergrad in criminal justice, its better to get my masters in something different.

Both of them have told me that a masters of public administration would help me be able to become a police chief, and sherriff or a director of a state agency. I don’t really want to become any of those, because elected officials have no job security, and I am not a politician.

However, if it would help me become somebody higher up in the chain of command, I am all for it.

The FBI was at the university carreer fair a couple of weeks ago, and they said to get an MBA. They also said that they don’t normally like to hire cops, they would rather have businessmen. The FBI was kind of rude to me, and I thought that I could beat both of the agents up and take their lunch money, so I am reconsidering working for them.

To whoever suggested nova southeastern, thank you! They don’t require to much in the way of admission, and the mpa is only 18 months online. thank you very much.

The FBI seems like it has really gone way downhill over the last few decades.

They used to be one of the most respected law enforcement agencies in the world. Now they seem like a bunch of bozos with MBA’s instead of the best cops around.

Which is exaclty why I am reconsidering wanting to work for the FBI. I may still enter the federal service, but with a different agency.

I just got the worlds biggest kick in the balls today. I will have to stay another semester at washburn. I will have all the required courses spring of 2007, ASsUMING that they approve me for 27 hours next semester. unfortunately, I will need 4 more hours from washburn to graduate. 4 hours, in anything. They may not even approve me for the 27 hours next semester, then I might have to stay even longer. Anyone feel like coming over to my place and drinking tonight?

Yeah, their selection is pretty limited. But if you do decide to go, a major in Chandler with a minor in Joey is your best bet.
