What? No Jedi Knights here?
I was born and raised Catholic, but now I believe in the infinitely ineffable. What does that mean? Well, it means that the force that is behind the universe is totally impossible to comprehend; although we experience it daily, it will not respond to us as would another person. It has no anger or need to be worshipped, it probably has no man-like attributes at all, despite us being part of it. We do, however, need to respect it, much in the way that we need to respect a bolt of lightening, a raging fire, or, for that matter, the creation of a human being from two zygotes. It all is the physical manifestation of that force that creates order. Basically, any religion that claims the universe is created by some person / deity is inherently wrong. The Taoists probably have it closest to the truth, IMO.
Whew! That’s the most thought I’ve given to my belief system in a long time.
You guys ever seen that bumper sticker of the Darwin ?Creature? humping the Jesus Fish doggy style?!? Hilarious.
I’d consider myself agnostic/atheist. Agnostic because i think “the church” is a bogus and filled with conspiracy. But i almost think that there has to be something “bigger” out there. Simply because we can’t explain how everything started. Kind of like how the greeks and romans had gods to explain what they didn’t understand. For example, Helios was the god that pulled the sun across the sky. I think once we know how the universe started religion and god will die.
I belive in almost nothing, whats that called?
Catholic
but have my own concerns about my own faith.
Told you powerlifter. Many of these folks will make funny posts of how intolerant the religious are while not seeing the ironic intolerance of their posts. How come, if it’s the religious that are supposed to be so intolerant, these posts always end up as non-religious bashing the religious and not the other way around? Seriously think about it for a minute. That’s how it always works out. There was no post by any religious person attacking non believers are believers of another faith. Yet, like clock work, uprovoked, we see the “religious people are intolerant, hypocrite, incapable of rationalization, etc. chants.” But again, when we go back to look at the posts were religion is brought up it’s a few of the nonbelievers who are scathingly attacking the religious. Powerlifter, your post was completely neutral as you left it open for anyone to declare what they indentified themselves as. And huck, your post completely lives up to what you dislike. You ended up trying to paint a picture of zealous, intolerant religious people. However, reread your post honestly. Funny how the religious people merely stated their affliations and didn’t start attacking anyone else’s faith or lack of. Very telling and no suprise.
“I want this to be fairly lighthearted, so try not to bash each other.” Ha! You didn’t know that was to much to ask of the zealous, irrational, intolerant, and fanatical atheists, did you! Funny how they exemplify what they supposedly hate about me!
The best thing about being am dyslexic atheist is that it’s a non-prophet organization…
I worship that goon with 27 inch arms…what’s his name? I believe in the power of stupidity.
Do you mean Gregg Valentino?? grin
Christian, non-denominational
Why do religious people get so damn worked up over everything? I don’t really see how anyone “Attacked” your religion Mr.‘Tolerant’ your handle contradicts everything I’ve ever seen you write btw. Also, Caped Cathiolic Crusader, you are a Spas! You guys need to read this weeks atomic dog, and really pay attention to the part about growing a stick up your but. Powerlifter asked, people replied, the only people making an issue out of anything is you two. Most the people that replied to this post were joking and making light of the topic. You obviously take your religious beliefs waaay too seriously. Even jesus had to tell the religious leaders of his time to get the sticks out of thier buts. Lighten up, life is about learning and having fun, not arguing about who’s going to hell, or who’s right about thier beliefs. Don’t be so sensitive, and try to work on your narrow mindedness.
Forrester, I’m not talking about people who were claiming to worship this or that (and were obviously joking.)
Forrester, I’m not talking about people who were claiming to worship this or that (and were obviously joking.) But, I think you might want to work on your reading comprehension if you didn’t notice the thinly veiled rant against christians.
Almost forgoet to address the statement about me not living up to my handle. To Tolerate does not mean to go along with. You can get into very heated arguements and still be tolerant. In the case of an disagreement if one does not force another to conform to his/her view, that is tolerance. You are obviously stuck on the liberal PC version of ‘tolerant’. Their definition of tolerant means to agree with them. Or, to at least disagree, but shut up about it. Glad I could teach you something.
Catholic here. Cool, alot Catholics on the board. I’m a fairly new Catholic so maybe I could fire some posts off if I have any questions on teachings. Should be appropriate on an off topic board. later.
Hey bro why don’t you read Caped Ones’ post. I think you’ll see who is doing the name calling. Those names are all the same ones he called me in the lake of fire thread. Why? For stating my opinion.
Actually, I did read that post. And others. And I agreed with him. You absolutely said that people such as myself and other religious people were incapable of rational thought. You’ve also argued that religious people should keep their beliefs to themselves; to the extreme that if you sneezed and someone offhandedly said “god bless you” you’d be offended! Why are only religious people the one’s that can be seen, but not heard? I’ve seen how selective you are in dragging up every negative event that has been done by supposedly religious people, while not mentioning the sacrifice of health, wealth, and lives to fight for the poor, the oppressed, the uneducated, etc. You’ve used history to paint all religions as violent, yet you forget the athestic communists and their bloody oppression of people of faith. Plus violence carried out on a daily basis by atheistic individuals. Would you deny that out of all the murders and rapes every year, some of them would be atheists? I read the posts in which you attempted to claim that I (I’m religious after all) try to force my religion on people. Huh? Words equals force these days? Offering a pamphlet is force (which I personally don’t do, I might suggest a book to someone)? I’m sorry, but you have a rather irrational idea of what force is. And you do come of as fanatical when, unprovoked, you begin verbally attacking religious people in general. I actually thought CCC did a good job turning your arguement around on you. And by illustrating how your post lived up to all the things you criticized us for. But, I still think your a swell guy. Oddly enough, outside of these type of posts I very rarely disagree with anything you post. Before anyone thinks to reply to me and suggest that I’m being UnChristian like…My beliefs move to be charitable, forgiving, compassionate; not to be a pushover. I’m ready to turn this one into the biggest archived post that will ever be recorded on this forum. I know that got some groans! I’m kidding!
WOW! My PC went down for a few days after I wrote that post, and I didn’t expect it to get so hot, some of you said it would! To the dude that asked me if “I am fishing” I’m not sure what you mean, but I probably am not, all I wanted to do was start an interesting thread. I too sometimes see non-religious folks bash religious ones, but I am not easily offended, You have to learn to be thick skinned when you are a Member of the Church-of-Jesus Christ Of later day saints, you know “a Mormon”, such as myself. (An no I only have 1 wife!)Anyway there were some funny posts, and some that may have been a little near the edge, but I really am interested in what the majority of the people here believe (if anything)
Bravo, Mr. Tolerant, for having a belief and sticking to it. But forgive the rest of us for feeling just a touch gun shy about you “true believers.” Most of us have been harrangued year in and year out about having our own ideas about religion. Don’t forget that most of us are also aware that the church, in all it’s manifestations have killed and maimed more people than any other organization. Many of us are sickened by the crass commercilization of the church. We are tired of those scumbags who abuse children. We have had enough of pick and choose religions. We tire of being told that we are going to burn in hell for using our own minds.
As for me, my relationship with god is very personal. I do not need an interpreter, aka…priest, shaman, etc… I think there is much lost in the translation.
Agnostic
I consider myself a Christian Warrior. Kind of like a Shaolin Monk.
