Religion Catch All

I don’t even know what that means.

They’ve essentially given filmmakers the option of either allowing them to dictate their art or their hiring practices.

The problem is that many have now rejected the Academy because of crap like this. I used to try to see the movie that won “best picture” if I had not already seen it, I don’t go out of my way anymore. As I said most of the films are good, but I want the best (I just saw Moonlight, and it was good, but best picture I don’t think so).

I hope film makers just make what they want to make, and don’t let the Academy limit them. I mean if Schindler’s List couldn’t win best picture under the new rules, should the award be taken seriously?

The thing is a lot of these movies wouldn’t even have been made if the producers couldn’t make the case that oscar buzz would generate profit for investors.

Awards shows are stupid anyway. How miserable does your life need to be to actually care what movie, album, musical, actor, whatever, wins a little statue?

Totally agree. My wife and her sisters and mom are into the celebrity stuff. I just don’t understand why they care about who some country singer marries or divorces. It doesn’t hurt anything, but I don’t understand it.

As I said, I used to trust the Academy as a source for a couple movie recommendations. The few films in the running for best picture were probably worth my time. I stopped caring the year Django Unchained lost to Argo. I remember there was some stuff about the Academy not wanting to award Tarantino because his movies have the N-word a lot.

That’s why I don’t completely accept it. I accept it as a possibility, but I maintain my skepticism.

I used to refer to film critics. But in the age of wokeness you can’t trust them as much.

Explain what you mean by moved away?

I am very curious, since you were out Catholic-ing me for a good while. I just hope it’s not because of a woman…

I don’t identify as Catholic anymore.

Heh. I really focused on the underlying catholic (small c) beliefs in my life. While I’ve done some apologetics for Catholic thinking and practice, I never really settled into praying to saints, for example. Or, even Mary. I still think Catholics are misrepresented (worshipping Mary) on these and other things. However, I did find that such became increasingly distracting and unnecessary in my life.

No hard feelings for the faith.

Are you being deliberately vague? If there is something deeply personal going on that you don’t want to discuss in public just say its private and you don’t want to talk about it.
Changing one’s faith is usually a seismic shift in someones life. Given the situation with the current Pope, I can understand the discouragement with the faith.
Basically, something happened and you certainly have my curiosity.

Agree. My Baptist HS taught that Catholics were worshiping the saints as false gods. Not a very generous description of the practice.

Nope, just the evolution of my own thought concerning Eucharistic adoration, pedobaptism, prayers to Saints, and the development of the Papal office. Etc. I’ve wrestled with a number of things, but put it aside for a good long while. Lately I’ve re-examined a number of things and this is the result.

Yeah, I completely understand that the church doesn’t teach worship (which to me requires intent). More like asking church members to pray on your behalf. Except they number among the church body in heaven. These members also recognized as having lived exemplary and holy lives.

I just can’t agree in the necessity and effectual power. That’s my objection.

Not that they worship. Well, they’re not instructed to.

This is what I got from one of my Catholic friends. I also googled and that also agreed with what you and he said.

I realized that the Baptists school I went to did a lot of strawman arguments about ideas or organizations they didn’t agree with. I don’t think anyone would accept evolution if they thought it worked how my school said it did. Same with radiometric dating, age of the earth, big bang. All misrepresentations. I hope they aren’t purposely doing this (there would be some pretty serious implications in that situation), and are just victims themselves (living in an echo chamber).

Fair enough. You do what’s right for you. Heathen!

Really?

I guess you’ve already forgotten our earlier exchanges.

Its a bit ironic. Stating Pat will need medical treatment if he were to ever meet you in person. But aren’t you the same person that told me you had reported my account and actions were being taken against me when I asked if you were familiar with The Protocols of the Elders of Zion.

That is funny to me. Not very consistent in your internet tough guy persona.

But I suppose that is classic zecarlo.

Can’t wait to see what sort of witty barb you have to this one.

Agreed, but lots of great, low/moderate budget movies would never have been financed if they didn’t have award potential.

Check out the Martin Scorsese movie called Silence. It got snubbed by the academy(see the plot and you’ll probably know why) and flopped really badly and probably won’t even make back it’s budget on DVD sales.

IMO it’s one of his finest pieces of work but who in their right mind would finance a movie(50million budget) like this unless they expected it to make a profit riding on oscar buzz?

*It’s a movie about religion and faith. Fits the context of this thread. It’s very slow moving and contemplative so one really needs to be in the right frame of mind when he watches it.
