Rebirth of the Juggernaut: Brute Force and Ignorance (Part 1)

I’m a fan of Fahrenheit because it doesn’t see the temperature that water freezes as being the baseline of cold. It seems like a tougher scale to me. “Water is freezing? Alright, we’ll say that’s 32 degrees above ‘cold as hell’. Check back when we get to 0”.

Plus, with Fahrenheit, I get to talk about the time I experienced -60 with windchill, haha.

Regarding leaving reps in the tank, you definitely need to keep pushing your limits. Benching without a spotter has helped me in that regard, because you REALLY end up pushing hard knowing that, if you don’t make it, you’re going to have to deal with some pain.

Even that video of the bench I posted wasn’t a case of me having “nothing in the tank”. Yeah, that last rep was a super grinder, but I’m sure if I took it down for another rep I’d be able to at least make it halfway up. Maybe even more. You don’t have to go to Metzer levels of failure, but you gotta keep pushing.

Fair - though -60F is -51C; when you get down to that cold the scale you use doesn’t matter because everyone knows that it’s fucking cold regardless. For similar reasons my favourite temperature to talk about is -40F, which is -40C.

Anyway if I die on my 5+ sets squatting and/or benching tomorrow I’ll know who to blame!

I always thought that was pretty nifty. Yeah, once you get to -25, the body runs out of ways to convey to your brain how cold it is. I start having to look at outside factors, like how my car won’t start, or how the whole world basically stops moving. Air seems thinner too.

Best of luck on the + sets. Those are my favorite, haha.

AM WORKOUT

8 Rounds of the following

Log viper and press away 210
1x3

Viking squat 235
1x3

Band pull aparts
1x20

Circus dumbbell clean and press (right arm only) 115
1x1

Notes: This was heavy, but not as brutal as what I’ve been doing, and in turn I wasn’t as big a fan. Really focused on making that viper press fast on the first rep, as that’s what I’m going to want in the competition. Viking squats kept beating me up; the screw in the bottom of the harness kept digging into my stomach, and now I have a pretty nasty gouge there. Missed more in the CDB than I would like. I think my next cycle I’m going to start with the dumbbell, because that’s my weakness now.

Woke up at 197.6.

Just because it’s weird, wanted to document that I spent the entire workout listening to “Dancing Mad” from the Final Fantasy VI soundtrack.

I find, the further I get into competition prep, the more I empathize with Kefka.

Do you only train the right arm on CDB because that’s what you use in competition?

At this stage in the training, yeah. Earlier in the cycle I was training both arms, but as I’m getting closer I’m having to get things more precise since weights are getting heavier in training.

PM WORKOUT

250+lb sandbag pick up and carry
10 rounds of 20 seconds on/10 seconds off

Notes: First time making it through all 10 rounds. Didn’t travel very far, but I managed to at least lap the bag everytime. With this being training for the natural stone, it bodes well.

AM WORKOUT

(4) Texas Deadlift bar touch and go mat pulls
5x135+chains
5x225+chains
3x315+chains
1x405+chains
12+4+3x520+chains
17x405+chains

Standing ab wheel
4x8

DB lateral raise stripset
6x10lbs
6x15
6x20
6x25
6x20
6x15
14x10

Band pull aparts
1x50

Notes: Got called in to work Friday night-Saturday morning, so split my workout in half and go the deadlift done this morning. I was feeling beat up. Biggest issue was some bad forearm/bicep pain, which I realize is a result of lowering the log gently down from overhead. I’ll have to allow myself to be a little more aggressive. Got through the workout, but the ab wheel and lateral raises weren’t fun, and I was a little hesitant on the intial pull of each mat pull. Moving a little slower than normal, but still got the rep totals I was looking for. Pain seems to be gone now, so might just be an early morning thing. This training cycle has been beating me up, but it’s starting to really let me appreciate the whole “accumulation/intensification” dynamic.

Woke up at 196.0. May get a cheat meal in later.

What do your cheat meals consist of? Out of curiosity

Ooooooo, have you read Ecce Homo, or Human, all too Human?

I had a report in my Philosophy class a while back last year, but it took me almost five months to finish my paper. Besides the point,

I found both books to be interesting.

Human, all too Human confused me at first because Most of what is written is a series of aphorisms, but all in all interesting.

I did so-so on the paper though. My professor thought my paper formed into more of an apologetic, which wasn’t my intent, but I also am rather interested in Schopenhauer, and had to do a piece on him too, and I tried to combine their philosophies together due to subtle similarities, and I guess she got the wrong message.

Read them both. I’ve read just about all of Nietzsche’s works, haha. Unfortunately, it was all around the same time, so many of them blend together in my head. I’m working through Schopenhauer right now, and really enjoying him as well. A lot more clear than Nietzsche was, but part of the fun of Nietzsche was unpacking his thoughts and figuring out what he was getting to.

For cheat meals, my current go to is a Panda express 3 item with fried rice, just because one opened up like 3 minutes from my house and it’s easy to hit on Fridays. I’ll do a pizza every quarter or so, sometime sweet maybe every 6-9 months, but otherwise it’s just something really high in fat or high in carbs, and bigger portions.

Notes: Operating off 2.5 hours of sleep, I’m pretty happy with this. Needed to fight more to lock out that 9th rep, but it was good enough.

What are your thoughts on deloads? I’m currently on a deload week and I hate it. I feel like a lazy slob.

I think I shouldn’t have taken it because waves are flat so I haven’t been on the water; therefore, “work” has been drastically reduced. I feel like I could get away with blasting through and not taking one.

On the flip side do you think it is more beneficial to take a deload as to never actually need one, rather than being forced into one?

Hopefully you followed all that!

I take a deload week every 7 weeks, but I usually kick off the deload by doing some workout so incredibly stupid and taxing that I REALLY need that week off. That was how I ended up doing the 20k deadlift challenge in 11 minutes a while back, and other stupid workouts before.

I do like to deload BEFORE I need one. I’ve done it the other way before, and I’ve paid for it.

Yeah this is on week 7 as well. I was surfing really hard right up until this week as well so overall work got cut out pretty drastically.

You still follow a 5/3/1 progression, correct?

For bench and press, yeah. Right now squat and deads are ROM progression, based off a model that has worked for me.

What’s your ROM progression for squats? I know you do the mat pulls for deads but don’t think I’ve seen you mention this before.
