I remember when it was my goal to out strict press that 200lb axle press Matt Kroc did like 10 years ago. Funny you mentioned that a while ago. And yeah, sadly, my disgusting press comes back to me very fast upon training it. I’ll probably do some insane 300+lb strict soon. Sadly, even IF I outdeadlifted you, I’m still like 25lbs fatter than you. (Literally, you’re lean, i’m not :()
So funny we both had that Kroc press in our minds, haha. I also want that 5x640 deadlift one day.
And being lean is easy; it’s just not eating. Being strong is way harder. I think you’ve made the right call, haha.
Truth be told, I’ve been dieting somewhat strictly lately. The onslaught of Stan Efferding videos and his promoting of eating for athletic purposes has changed my view a bit on my diet.
I mean, I’m not fat, but I don’t have visible abs. I figure, why am I holding onto this fat if it doesn’t help me, and is likely a result of some faulty metabolism that could be improved? I’ve literally been eating eggs, oats, and steak and rice for a few weeks now and I’m down about 5lbs (hopefully bodyfat!). Been doing my circuits before training to get the heart rate up and just additional movement. It seems to be helping.
If not for my physique changing, I simply wanna perform better. After nationals, something bit me, and I feel like I have so much to prove…
That’s pretty awesome man. I had a similar thing happen when I was 29. Just looked in the mirror one day after I had finished a competition and let my weight go up and thought “What the f**k? Why do I look so awful if I’m training so hard?” Cleaned the diet up, dropped some excess weight and just moved and felt better. Rarely does a lot of extra fat help that much in this sport.
Great to see that fire lit. It does awesome things. Hope it keeps going.

Notes: This was a great bench day. Those 4 reps of 331 were smooth, and I may have had a grinder 5th in me, but I wanted to be fresh for the 5x5. That was a significant milestone. 275 was my max my first year of college, and I hit 300 on a standard weight set at home that summer, and since then those numbers have always been somewhat significant to me. To hit damn near 300 for 5x5 just feels great. Big fan of SVR II. Left knee is feeling strong through the Viking squats, and I’ve been slacking on my rehab otherwise, so I think things are on the mend.
Woke up at 195.4. Been having some GI issues. Mrs. brought home some baked goods for work that I’ve been eating in the morning before training, and I’m thinking there may have been something in them that don’t agree with me.
EMOM Stone of Steel w/60lbs over bar and remainder of minute on airdyne
10 minutes
Notes: Bar set to the 20 peg. On the last minute, went for a triple on the stone. That technique I figured out last time goes a LONG way. Far less back pain and more successful reps. Tried with 70lbs loaded and it kept slipping down my shirt. As much as it pains me, I might pick up a grip shirt.

Notes: Final workout of the cycle before deload and program change. Another solid run with SVR II. Jim knows exactly what he is doing with this program. Knee is feeling solid. I have some everyday pain, but squatting is painfree. Upperbody was a little jacked up, so took things light on dips.
Woke up at 196.0. Cheat meal yesterday was Panda Express, fried rice, orange chicken and terryaki chicken. Going to be a little loose on nutrition over this long weekend.
Merry Christmas T3h. Rooting for you to break 200 lb bodyweight over
Christmas.
You are always so excited about me getting fat, haha.
Merry Christmas punisher
Hey Pwnny, dunno if you’ve seen this before but I just discovered it today:
It’s a podcast basically telling us that we’re really not that smart. I thought you might like it because you’re smart, which makes you smart enough to know that in the grand scheme of things you know absolutely nothing.
Enjoy!
@duketheslaya Much appreciated dude.
@Yogi1 Thanks for the link man. Sounds very Socratic. I might start doing some weighted vest walks soon, and these would be good to pass the time.

Snow shoveling: 45 minutes
Notes: Wanna describe how this broke down, because I’m pretty happy with it. Started the workout warming up wit giant sets of mat pull, ab wheel and bench. I hit the topset of the mat pulls right before the set of 246 on the bench. At that point, I finished out the bench workout before coming back for the backoff set on the mat pull. Threw in the chins after shoveling snow. Workout was a little lighter since I was still figuring stuff out and had to shovel snow, but the structure is there. Felt right coming back to this. I thrive with this sort of training. However, my time with 5/3/1 has certainly paid off. My recovery between sets is ridiculous, to include on the rest pause of mat pulls. Was traditionally resting in the 90-120 second mark, basically doing small sets while still strapped to the bar. Now it was like 40 seconds, and still able to produce solid results, and then come back, hit a great bench workout, and then come back again for a solid backoff set. I think some great things are going to come out of this cycle.

Notes: I wanna explain the layout here too, as I liked this. Began the workout with giant sets of squats, log and rows. Once I ran out of log reps, switched to dips. Hitting the axle rows double overhand because I heard we’re doing an axle 18" deadlift unstrapped for the competition, so I wanna bring my grip strength back up.
Next week, I need to set the chains to 14 links; forgot I switched to 6 week cycles instead of 7. Will probably go heavier on the weight too, but this was my first time back after my injury and wanted to see what my knee could do.
Overall pleased with this set-up, and think it will carry me far. Assistance work needs to find a place; maybe on my events day. Missing out on some ab work and upperbody fluff. Leg drive is garbage too, but I can see some of it still there.
Built a 250lb sandbag today during some downtime, so I have that to play with now. Should bode well.
Woke up at 198.0. Lots of sodium the past few days.
PM WORKOUT
30 minute circuit EMOM
-Minute 1: Stone of steel over bar (20), 60lbs loaded
-Minute 2: 3 reps powerstairs w/205lbs
-Minute 3: 250+lb sandbag pick up/extension
-In between: Airdyne
Notes: This was exhausting, but a great workout. Back was fried from putting together a trampoline beforehand, so was having some issues with the stone. I can see in the video my technique has regressed; going around the stone rather than on top. Can’t really see the power stair implement, but I’m focusing on pushing it forward with my quads rather than swinging it with my hips. I noticed the guys that were faster than me in my last competition did that. Sandbag is heavy as crap but a good challenge. I think between that and the SOS I should be able to handle any natural stone.
Left knee is a little achy from this. The sandbag seemed to put some stress on the patella.
Woke up at 194.4. this morning. This workout was from last night.
Really cool training session! I like the way you put these things together. So simple, but so Smart! Specific and General!
Thanks dude. It’s taken me a bit to figure it out, but I like how this unfolds. Get my events and conditioning in all at once, and learn how to perform under fatigue. I stole the airdyne between minutes from Bud Jeffries, and it’s been such a game changer. Was curious what I was going to use the bike for.
Only limiting factor is shoes. I’d love to throw some Circus Dumbbell into the mix, but I like to hit that from weightlifting shoes while stones and bags I prefer something flat. Such a silly thing to get wrapped up about though.
Inspiring stuff as always brother!
That SoS looks like such a bitch man. Are there any contests that have used or are leaning towards using one for reps over bar or anything? Just seems like the one thing you really can’t train for without it
It’s pretty much where all major competitions are moving these days, at least in Strongman Corporation competitions. Kinda similar to how it used to be wood logs and then they started making them out of metal, SoS is a little easier on promoters to put together a show. You can get good without one, but to get great you’ll need one, but it’s true of just about every implement in strongman. Sadly, as things get a little more standardized, it becomes a bit more about who has practiced more.
That said, as a home gym owner, I love it. Much smaller footprint than having a bunch of concrete stones.
@furo Thanks dude! Great to see you back.
