Rebirth of the Juggernaut: Brute Force and Ignorance (Part 1)

You ever take a crack at DB man makers? They check a lot of “this sucks” boxes.

I saw in here that you’re a fan of high rep trap bar deadlifts. Reminded me of a surprisingly brutal “challenge” workout I did after seeing some guys talking about it online:

100 reps at 225 as fast as possible.

I got it done in a hair over 7 minutes, and I remember seeing some real heavy hitters get it done in about 3:30. Would be very interested to see what your time is if you feel like taking a stab at it.

@ChongLordUno You’re gonna get a real kick out of this one…

@mr.v3lv3t You reminded me about that movement! Haha. I threw it in today.

@TrevorLPT I might give that a go sometime. I was doing 4 plates for max reps for a while, and I’m working on my 135 deathset for the holidays. Do you pull high or low handle?

AM WORKOUT (0600) Post night shift

100 rounds of 20 seconds on/10 seconds off

Rotating between the following in no set order (all DB movements done with 45lb DBs)

Devil Presses
Clusters
Thrusters
Front squats
Manmakers
“Armor”
Burpees
Burpee over dumbells
Chins
Alternating DB snatches

Notes: This was so effective yesterday that I decided to repeat it with a few more movements thrown in. It’s just too damn good. Bit of auto-regulation in it. If I start to gas out, I’ll run a few of the easier movements back to back until I feel ready to go again.

I’m saying up all day to re-adjust my clock, so probably going for a long walk later to get out in the sun.

How often do you end up doing this? I don’t feel like I’ve seen you mention it for a little while but a while back it seemed like it was happening more often.

I’m taking an EMT course this spring, and thinking of becoming a firefighter/paramedic after college. I assume most departments run on similar schedules but in my town, it’s 24 hour shifts (8am-8am) on/off/on/off/on and then four days off. I don’t mind the shift length, but the staying up to reset my clock wouldn’t work great when I have to do the same thing the next day. Most of the time I’d just sacrifice the sleep but when it’s a multiple-times-a-week thing and for a job that requires some level of energy and alertness, I’m not sure how that’d go. One of the guys I talked to said most of the workers who have families struggle to balance the demands from home and at the job, and marriages can get dicey, as well as missing out on kid’s events. That’s really my main concern (should I go into that field) - making sure I’m taking care of myself well enough to do my job well, but also not neglecting my family.

I don’t have to do it often any more, as my job has me working a 9-5 far more regularly, but this is a unique circumstance.

I’m going to express my ignorance here: do you need a college degree to be a paramedic?

No degree is required. Probably just a GED. But I’ve firmly decided that I want to get at least a bachelor’s degree before moving onto anything else, simply because I have no idea what the future holds and want to have something in my back pocket should circumstances change.

And I don’t think I’d want to become a career paramedic. 20+ years of that seems too long, at least for my situation. So it’d be a few years while I’m young and then move into some other field.

At least up here, it’s generally its own course that lasts about a year. No degree required.

Your conditioning is top freaking notch man. This is absolute insanity dude.

@jshaving Don’t know if you’re still thinking military, but if you get your bachelors and want to stay where you currently live, you might look into the national guard. You could commission as an officer, which would make immediate use of that degree. Would allow you to get into a system with a pension/retirement plan.

@kdjohn While you’re here, I’m about 3/4 of the way through the Viking art of War book and halfway through that Muay Thai book. The viking book is pretty dry, very factual, but occasionally there’s a cool flourish of facts about our Scandinavian ancestors. HEAVY emphasis on naval strategy, which makes sense. Muay Thai dynamite is cool: it’s written by a native Croatian in the mid 80s who trained in a camp in Thailand. Much like that “Championship Streetfighting” book, what’s cool about it is the epoc in history it documents. This dude “discovered” Muay Thai before the UFC saved us with it, and he’s in the book being like “Dude: MT has you training HARD CONTACT! It’s crazy! No wonder it’s so effective!”

@boilerman Much appreciated dude! It’s a terrible drug: I’m chasing the dragon and have to keep upping the dose, haha.

Got in a 2 hour walk to help stay awake. Been listening to the Chaos and Pain hatecast while I walk. Jamie is just on my wavelength.

@EmilyQ I’ve been meaning to write this down/tag you and I keep forgetting. First, thank you for being my on call sympathetic ear, considering I know you perform this work as a profession and I’m taking advantage of that for free. That said, I’m in the same geographic place I was a year ago and it’s been a solid reminder of how I’m NOT in the same headspace as far as my relationship with food goes. This time last year, I was obsessed with food. I was spending my free time googling nutrition facts, agonizing over what I was going to eat for my next cheat meal, having serious anxiety over going out to eat with my co-workers, etc. Now, funny enough, I’m EATING the same way as I was, but there’s no denial or agony or anxiety: I enjoy the foods I’m eating, I’m not “tempted” to eat off menu, I’m not fetishizing food or looking forward to a binge. I look forward to the EXPERIENCE of a meal, and, in turn, it’s not something I want to do by myself, getting a bunch of fast food and scarfing it down alone in my room. I want to come home to my wife and kid, take them out to a nice meal, and enjoy my time with them.

Getting a clean bill of health at my last physical went a long way in helping me have confidence in my choices, but it’s also just taken a fair bit of introspection and awareness, and you expressing concern and your helpfulness was really awesome. I appreciate what you do.

Thanks man! Been a helluva past few years for growth.

Aw, thanks, but taking to curious, introspective people like you is what I do for fun. I’ve also learned a great deal from you, so it’s all good and fair.

@EmilyQ Absolutely! In that regard, I felt it proper to give you a follow-up. Didn’t want to end the series on a cliffhanger, haha.

@ChongLordUno did this one and thought of you.

AM WORKOUT (0450 wake up via alarm) FASTED

6 count burpees

10 sets of 50

90 seconds rest between first 8 sets, 30 seconds rest between final 2

Total time: 56:22

Notes: A hotel gym classic. Travel day today, and got up before the fitness center opened. This will make the flight home a breeze, and motivated me to eat all the remaining food in my room.

Superb my man

Can’t beat hitting some high reps then rewarding yourself with some premium burpee fuel

I’ve only ever heard of people thinking of the Guard as a bit of a joke. Weekend warriors, or whatever they say. (Not saying that that’s the right view of it.) I really have no knowledge of what it’s all about or what it entails, but I suppose the benefits could definitely be worth it.

@ChongLordUno absolutely dude! No better way to start the day.

@jshaving I gave up on being cool in high school, haha. As far as securing a future goes, it’s a solid use of a degree.

Haha, I wasn’t saying I wouldn’t do it because of what other people think, just that that’s all I’ve ever known about it. I’ll definitely check it out - I think I’ve got about 30 emails in my inbox from a school recruiter anyway. Maybe I can get him off my back if I finally give him an answer.

One of my best friend is in the Reserves, so a bit different than the Guard of course.

He’s gone on to win several accolades, and has completed Ranger school, Airborne school, and will be going away to Green Beret school next.

Not suggesting you do any of those things, but you can accomplish some really awesome stuff without going full monty.

What brand of weighted vest do you use? I have a human-x vest that I got 5 years ago, but it doesn’t fit snug and isn’t really good for push-ups or doing a lot of movement.
Do you use weightlifting shoes?

Just want to say thank you for providing my daily dose of entertainment this morning.
