Rebirth of the Juggernaut: Brute Force and Ignorance (Part 1)

This one has really stuck with me. As I’ve had to drastically reduce the quantity of food over the past few years I really do appreciate the quality more. But after that discussion and bringing that particular thought to fore, it’s hard to avoid the fact that a lot of my food choices are just to fill a space, and not really of any significant nutritional value. In fact, some of it is a net detriment And not very palatable/enjoyable.

I had to laugh today though. Went for a cardiac check up. Stopped in to the cafeteria of a “heart hospital” and there was very little of any decent nutritive value and it was all loaded with sodium. Not a damn thing actually worth eating.

@dagill2 Still very relevant: definitely keep sharing.

@simo74 Very much appreciate the kind words. And full concur. My wife and I started mandatory date nights because we realized just how robotic life had become with COVID. It’s too easy to lose your humanity in these situations.

@boilerman It’s funny: I don’t really care about the eating, but I’m VERY much becoming a fan of cooking. It’s meditative for me. I just finished making another batch of hotel room tacos, and it’s just nice to be “in the moment” there. And I’m absolutely loving my Ninja grill/air fryer my wife got me for my birthday. Something about making something and it being yours really adds to it.

@tlgains Those rituals are definitely a part of what makes food fetishized. In turn, what we can do is keep the ritual but change the center of it. You wanted a fast food feast after DW: how about a DW feast instead? Be a great time to make a big steak with a side of some seafood and delicious veggies.

I actually AM a fan of the mental strategy of telling myself “later”, much like you’re doing. I want a 20 piece KFC meal? Cool: I’ll have that LATER. Often times, when later rolls around, the craving is gone.

@SkyzykS I remember reading an elitefts article talking about them holding a seminar at the Compound about bodybuilding dieting and, when lunch rolled around, Dave Tate ordered pizza for the crowd. Only ONE dude in the audience brought his own food to the fat loss seminar, haha. We’re our own worst enemies.

Definitely hear you on the filling the space thing. Learning how to eat until satiated vs stuffed was a big trick, to say nothing of eating the GOOD things to get satiated and not relying on junk.

Dude that is a great idea! I can either cook a huge feast or just order DW approved foods from restaurants.

This gets tricky. Keep in mind DW was big on organic foods/quality nutrition. A lot of restaurants will add stuff to the cooking process to make foods more palatable. Butter and salt are the primary offenders. Nothing wrong with those two things on their own, but quite often the dosage is the poison.

But ordering “good foods” is still a step in the right direction.

Absolutely, dude. When you go out, and eat a dish consisting of generally healthy ingredients, and it just tastes amazing and all “restaurant-y”, that’s whatever fat it’s cooked in, and HEAPS of salt.

Ever watch pro chefs do cooking videos?

“Just a glug of olive oil”

holds the bottle over the pan for 10 seconds

“Just a pinch of salt”

heavily dusts with a shower of salt

I’m curious, why would salt be considered an offender?

It’s a thing that gets added to the food. “Offender” is written in a context here.

ahh okay, out of context

It’s why I wrote the sentences after that one

I feel this. Those damn peanut butter Oreos…always got me jonesin’ for that sweetness.

@jshaving As though Oreos needed improvement, haha

Although getting healthy and lean has been ultimately the right call, in my heart I’ll always want to be a 308lb powerlifter.

AM WORKOUT (0800 wake up) FASTED

Tower of Babel DB thrusters w/50lbs +5 burpees between sets

1-2-3-4-3-2-1

Transition immediately to

ToB DB front squats w/50lbs + 5 burpees between sets

1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 (capped out with a final burnout of 8 front squats and 8 burpees)

Total time: 29:44

Notes: DB thrusters continue to be just kinda crappy compared to a barbell or kettlebell, but this was a lungbreaker and a great way to start off the day. Planning on getting in some walking as we got a day off today that was unexpected. I hit this fasted to get the metabolism humming and, in full disclosure, it’s enjoyable to fast before the training and then come back and eating 3 of my meals all at once vs splitting them up.

I am not to far from this weight but without the associated power lifter strength :sob:

@cyclonengineer With your height, it’s gotta be SHW or bust, haha.

Went walking around downtown for like 2.5 hours. Went to Carl’s Jr for lunch, thinking I’d be able to eat inside but they are still carryout only. Ended up getting a lettuce wrapped grilled chicken sandwich and then coming back to the room and mixing up some salsa, canned spinach, tuna and beef jerky into some sort of monstrosity. Gotta love travel cuisine.

Did it taste good?

It was pleasant. It was the Santa Fe sandwich, but given I take most of the yummy stuff off of it, it was a chicken breast with green chilis wrapped in lettuce.

AM WORKOUT (0700 wake up) FASTED

BLACKJACK: THE HOUSE ALWAYS WINS

Notes: Just going to explain this one. Traditional Blackjack workout is alternating between chins and dips where the total number of reps is 21. Start with 20 chins and 1 dip, then 19 chins and 2 dips, etc, until you end up at 1 chin and 20 dips.

I stuck with chins, because chins are awesome, but went with a DB complex for the alternate movement. The complex I picked was a Devil Press into a thruster. So devil press the DBs, then catch the weight from the press into a front squat and then thruster it up. That’s 1 complex. I used 25lb DBs. Was debating between that and the 20s.

I set a 1 hour cap on this, primarily because I was training fasted.

I started with the chins, because I knew getting through 20 of those complexes was going to blow me out and make me pretty worthless for the rest of the workout. Better to save that for the end.

In the 1 hour cap, I was able to get through the 16 rep complex, go over and do 4 chins and get through 5 reps of the 17 rep complex. The house won here.

For you visual types: 20 chins/1 complex, 19/2,18/3,17/4,16/5,15/6,14/7,13/8,12/9,11/10,10/11,9/12,8/13,7/14,6/15,5/16,4/5

When I was done, it looked like I had gone swimming: I was soaked.

Finished up with some ab work. Came back to my room and ate a lot.

PM WORKOUT (1800)

Got in what @ChongLordUno would call a “Wee Cheeky One”

Did 10 burpees, then lunged the distance of my hotel room and back, then 9 burpees, all the way down to 1 and then back up to 10. Took about 30ish minutes. Good way to get in some activity after a nap and get my body reset for night shift.

Cannot beat a wee cheeky one to get the blood pumping and keep the voices at bay

AM WORKOUT (0600) Post Night Shift

80 rounds 20 seconds on/10 seconds off

Rotated between (all DB movements w/45lbs DBs)

DB thrusters
Devil Presses
DB front squats
Burpee lateral over DB
Burpee
Chins
DB snatch

Notes: This was a solid one. Some of those movements are easier than others, so I’d slot things in and out as difficulty scaled. No real set pattern, but played it by instinct. Some dude came in, saw me, did 3 sets of lateral raises and peaced out. Pretty funny.

I am gravitating toward this stuff these days. I feel like, when I “settle down”, this is how I’d train. All this WOD stuff. It’s nice to get the conditioning and lifting done all at once.
