Rebirth of the Juggernaut: Brute Force and Ignorance (Part 1)

I may be just inventing this memory but isn’t there a rest pause variant of 531 in the OG book?

There is. Don’t think it’s in 1st edition, but the “rest pause challenge” is here in the articles.

That was mapping DC onto 5/3/1, whereas I’m trying to map 5/3/1 onto DC. Use DC’s split and frequency but 5/3/1’s percentages for the specific lifts.

That is a serious kettlebell. The one thing I don’t like about my current program is there are no kettlebell movements for the dynamic/explosive work.

My time at my in-laws really had me fall in love with the kettlebell. It’s such an awesome little tool. Always ready to go: no loading or set-up, just grab it and hit some swings or some snatches.

Of course, I can still find a way to explode slowly, haha, but such is the life of an oaf.

Dont have my copy at work but think it is in beyond (where is @dagill2 when you need him).

My vote is for second breakfast, or n+1 where n = the number of breakfasts you currently have

My son and daughter both both got invited to the next grading which is a week away. My daughter is a Brown belt so wasn’t too excited (not her first rodeo), my son on the other had (age 8) is a white belt and this will be his first grading, he was so happy and proud of himself. Even if I don’t agree with a belt and grading system for martial arts I can not deny the positive effect it has on the children and how it effects their motivation to train and ‘improve’.

This is interesting. What I am taking from this, is that the more you do whilst fatigued the better you adapt and potentially improve your recovery rates. This is at the other end of the scale to my don’t do too much conditioning because it might impact on the strength training thoughts. I really need to listen to better people more.

Yep, in the challenges section from beyond.

I’m in the same boat here. My little ones will likely be getting a bullshit stripe added to their belts in the next few weeks, more or less as a participation trophy. I’m instinctively dead against that kind of thing, but I can absolutely see the value from their reactions, as long as its pretty clear that it’s a reward for commitment, not achievement.

@simo74 I don’t even name the meals anymore, haha. Even breakfast gets nebulous. But I’m thinking a midday meal here. And the belts definitely get the kids going. My kiddo is super proud of their 3 stripes, and truth is, they earned them. What I like about this school is that it really is merit based; My kid showed up the most junior one there and has already advanced to the third most senior student in their class of 9, because they practice at home, put in the work, and they have technique better than most the adults in my adult class. Some of the kids in the class got heart burn over it, and the instructor flat out said “You know what it takes to get another stripe: you need to do it”

Regarding the conditioning thing: I’m a big believer in the idea that the body will adapt to whatever stimulus it faces, for good OR for bad. So, if you train really hard, your body gets beat up and you baby it, the body learns “Hey: if I get REALY sore, I get a day off. Let’s get REALLY sore so we can get a break.” If, however, you train really hard, you get really sore, and then you just keep smashing that body part over and over again, the body goes “Hey, if I get REALLY sore, I get smashed into pieces. F**K THAT. We better heal FAST.”

It’s the missing element in the recovery discussion. If you give in to your body demanding recovery, it will always demand it.

DEEP WATER BEGINNER, Week 4, Workout 2

AM WORKOUT (0500 wake up via dog, 0640 workout)

Chins (various grips)
4xFailure

Bent over rows 215
4x10

Clean pulls 215
3x10

Axle shrugs against light bands
1x90

Kroc rows dropset
16x130
6x90

Band pull aparts
1x50

SUPERSET (hyper-abs) no rest between movements

Reverse hyper 230
3x20

Standing ab wheel
3x7

Notes: 2:40 between sets of back work. Clean pulls are becoming more and more natural. Got some solid explosion out of them. Got to test out my Ironmaster add ons, and they’re clutch. They also look like a before and after add for some sort of supplement.

TSD was a decent enough workout last night. We did a kicking drill where we’d hit one wavemaster, run to another, hit it, then lunge our way back to the start. Got to officially learn the roundhouse yesterday, which means I can start using it as part of my striking. I liked how they taught power generation for it: very similar to the Thai roundhouse, stepping out with the non-kicking side and pivoting. Not a big fan of striking with the ball of my foot vs my shin, but I’m here to learn.

Oh yeah, also did 100 single armed swings and 50 dips this morning before breakfast, just to get some blood flowing.

To be fair, we even do that kind of thing around here. I got fatter during that transformation deal, and folks said “good job” for putting up a picture. I’m the oldest-school “everyone’s a weakling” guy on the planet, but I’m trying to get better about recognizing the value in just congratulating effort (even though it feels very, very wrong to me).

Considering how few humans put ANY effort into anything, celebrating effort seems really worthwhile these days.

I agree. It’s honestly hard for me to parent my son right now. The “village” is not what it once was and I have a hard time understanding what fair expectations are and how much praise to give.

Oh man, tell me about it. I was so happy for my kid to get into school and socialize, but they came back with some AWFUL habits that we had to immediately course correct. You wonder what the hell other parents are teaching their kids with the crap that comes out. It’s so frustrating, I wanna shake these parents and go “Dude: same team! What the hell are you doing?!”

I praise the hell out of my kid when they do well. They’re honestly not great at accepting said praise, haha. That’s a lesson in itself.

@TrainForPain, @T3hPwnisher - Hi guys. Sorry to break in here, but this conversation hit home.

Can I ask how old your kids are? My son is 8 (like @simo74’s) and I’ve run into similar attitudes as well… Drives me up a wall.

BTW, it kind of goes without saying, but I’ll say it anyway: @T3hPwnisher - you do amazing work and I’ve honestly begun to rethink a lot of my approach because of what you write here and over in your Mythical Strength blog. So… Thanks for that!

I prefer to not divulge too many details about family/personal stuff. Internet be weird sometimes.

And appreciate having you as a reader dude! Glad it’s been helpful.

My parents always set an early bedtime and there was a pretty strict rule of “no TV on weekends”, also we ALWAYS ate dinner together.

This was the norm for our little Chinese community and I had no friends outside of that bubble, so I knew no different.
Really shocked when I found out that my classmates were allowed to watch TV on the weekdays and had about a year of full on rebellion (then realized that I actually enjoyed studying).

My little bro, who’s much more social, really struggled with the rules after making friends

n = 2 but my little bro and I didn’t really care about praise or lack there of. Comparison is what really hurt.
Mum realized she took it too far when I stabbed a kid with a pencil for beating me on a maths test and my little bro started hating his old friends

I was just thinking about this in my own life and in my siblings’. I didn’t know to call someone gay as an insult or make people feel bad about not being as good as me at something until I started playing parks & rec soccer with other kids my age. One of my brothers who’s too young for school has learned most of the little “bad” stuff that he knows from our cousin who’s now in elementary.

Some kids suck, haha. And so do their parents. Actually, maybe just humans in general.

I love behavioural science and wouldn’t want to be studying anything else, but I REALLY REALLY wish there wasn’t a need for it

Humans (including me) tend to be lazy and self serving

There’s a blog post in here (if you haven’t already written it)

I’ve definitely touched on it through out the blog, but probably never just sat down and spelled it out. Great idea! I’ve got a few posts already set up, but that one can easily work it’s way in.
