Rebirth of the Juggernaut: Brute Force and Ignorance (Part 1)

Took the dogs for a quick fasted walk this morning, then ran our half marathon. Meals beforehand were some greek yogurt mixed with PBfit, 2 omega 2 eggs, 2 finibars at the start line with a bang energy drink and 1 celery stick with some “Nuts n More” peanut butter on it.

We finished at 2hrs 6 mins. Not a PR for me, but I stayed with the Mrs as her sciatica started acting up around the halfway point. She pushed me through the first half, and I pushed her through the back half. We were both proud of how much we accomplished with how LITTLE we trained for this. Last year, I was running twice a week with a very rigid approach focused on getting into “half marathon shape”, and this year I ran once a week at most with no real progression. Just relied on being in good general shape. It showed. My cardiovascular system had no issues with this, but calves cramped up pretty fierce.

Glad to be done. Onto the next phase. I wanna get some more strongman stuff back in the rotation.

Kudos, dude. Always impressive that you pump serious iron and pump out half marathons.

I’ve always toyed with the idea of training for half/full marathons and triathlons in the spring/summer, while strength stays on maintenance. Then reverse that in the winter. I think it would be a fun and interesting challenge.

Thanks dude! They are solid for mental anguish. Way different from lifting. My goals are always the same: no stopping and no water

I’m 100% with you on the water in everything. I can have a SIP of water, but people chugging water during things is totally weird to me - I feel like I’d vomit. I just hydrate before. There are exceptions, of course, but ultramarathons aside, if you’re trying to hydrate during and you feel dehydrated, it’s already too late.

Also, one look at hyponatremia seizures and you’ll think twice about chugging tons of water while working out - at least, without electrolytes/salt.

Yup. Just never made sense to me.

I also went unconventional and recovered with fat rather than carbs. Post race I ate 3 more celery sticks with PB, 2 almond butter sandwiches and 1 PB sandwich. Seemed to work well.

Nice work on the run man. The fat for recovery makes perfect sense. A farmer has to change the oil in his tractor after all.

Belated happy birthday!

By the way -
I don’t know if you’ve already selected your new laptop, but I got a gaming laptop (that looks nothing like a gaming laptop) not long ago that’s been awesome. Sleek, awesome keyboard, outrageously fast, and half the price of an equivalent macbook. Figured I’d give a vote for it, as it’s perfect for work and and open world games.

There are faster models up to 2K, but it doesn’t seem necessary to spend that much, unless you already have that much in mind, in which case, get all the technologies.

Wow, considering the specs, that’s a really good deal. The only downside for me is I’ve never heard of the name

I understand…you’re Batman.

Just had a chance to catch up on everything around what @kdjohn said above and have to agree with him on the health side of things. Already feeling mentally lighter now that I’m using training to support health, rather than the other way around. Sometimes you gotta take a few steps back to keep progressing.

Also, I feel for you on the cholesterol issue. High blood pressure is genetic in my family, exacerbated by poor lifestyle choices. I held out longer than most of my family by avoiding said poor lifestyle choices, but it eventually caught up to me and I had to go on meds. A lot of the trick is finding a balance between your mental health, physical health, and medications. I might could get my BP down to juuuuuust below the “need medication” threshold, but would have to be absolutely nuts about my lifestyle to get there. Having to focus so hard on just keeping BP low enough to avoid damage would likely make my anxiety unbearable, so I went on BP meds and still work hard to stay healthy. The first meds I went on for BP almost killed me, so had to do some experimentation to find one that works. Maybe that’s the path for you, or maybe you can sustain this lifestyle and your mental health. You’re inhuman in most exploits, wouldn’t surprise me if you could pull this off as well.

Congrats on kicking ass in the marathon too man :metal:

@mr.v3lv3t Thanks dude! And LOL at the analogy. It was honestly a technique to keep me away from junk. I had a giant chocolate muffin from Costco in my foodbag that I had promised myself, but I told myself I had to eat all the peanut butter/almond butter stuff FIRST and THEN, if I was still hungry, I’d have the muffin. It worked out well: I was satiated after all that fat, and felt “better” loading up on stuff that had some sort of health benefit to it compared to just being yummy.

@whang Thanks dude!

@flappinit Much appreciated for the recommendation dude. My home laptop is legit just a machine I use to write up blog posts on word, surf the net, and play video games from 1998 on, so I tend to go pretty bargain basement. It’s most likely going to be a shared x-mas gift between my in-laws and myself, so I’ll see where I land.

@kleinhound Come on man: at least give me The Punisher. Batman is lame, haha.

@garagerocker13 Appreciate the perspective dude. For me, the meds are just a no sale. My frustration comes less from the medication and more from dealing with my medical provider, which is not say, NOT dealing with him. This dude has still never actually laid an eyeball on me and sees fit to prescribe all sorts of meds and treatment and exams, and I’m getting frustrated trying to “beat the tape” just to get him off my back. It’s one of those things I know I can do, but I’m just tired of having to do it for HIS benefit rather than my own.

AM WORKOUT (0700 ish, slept till 0430, then dozed until 0530)

ALTERNATING SETS (incline and flat bench)

1x9
2x6

DB bench press 105s
1x7

DROPSET

1x12
Lots x 11

Dips w/rest pause
50+22+2x20+whatever else to get to 200

Poundstone Curls
131xAxle

Notes: 2:00 between sets of benching. Day after half, still a bit tender and hungry, so kept rest periods and expectations low and just went for it. Crazy the rep drop off on DB bench when you do it at the end vs the beginning of the workout: good data point. Chest was totally blown up at the end. Getting a bit better at figuring out the slingshot: need to wear it higher up on the arm. Always works better with DBs for me.

Had my second elk sirloin yesterday: melted a little grassfed butter on it and it went a long way. I’m making elk tacos tomorrow using some 1 net carb tortillas I bought online. I’m still buying science experiment foods. I really need to stop.

I just got back from the grocery store where I picked up some cauliflower and spinach gnocchi. The ingredients list is actually pretty tame as far as science experiment foods, but I saw it and couldn’t resist. Would’ve purchased it even with one of those encyclopedic lists haha.

How long are you waiting after the dropset to hit the last set with the 50s?

Those things are just too damn tempting. Haha. I wait 2 minutes between those sets.

Going to take some more photos when things are cleaned up a bit better, but look what I got today

@simo74 Thanks man! Had my other rack for 13 years. Was sad to see it go, but this upgrade is awesome.

@mr.v3lv3t Definitely dude! Titan has really stepped up their game.
