Reaction to Whey/Cottage Cheese

I tried a protein powder once and ended up going to the hospital, because I had a pretty sever allergic reaction. At the time, I wasn’t sure what I was allergic to, because I did a test and it said I didn’t have any food allergies.

Milk products have caused me a little discomfort in the past, especially some ice creams, but nothing as sever as my experience with the whey powder.

Anyway, when I got into lifting weights I inevitable came across the recommendation to eat cottage cheese. When I did eat it I had a reaction, again not as sever as the powder.

I did some research on the net and learned that the liquid part of cottage cheese has whey and the solid part has casein protein. I did a little experiment and strained the cottage cheese so that I’d only be eating the solid stuff.

Interestingly enough, I didn’t have a reaction when I ate it. It seems to me that I’m allergic to whey. Here are my questions. Why didn’t this show up on the food allergy test I took? Why is it that I can drink milk and experience little discomfort? Doesn’t milk have whey too?
