Worked underhooks from standing to get to the back.
Good rolls afterwards too. Gassed, drenched in sweat by the end. Tapped out a few times, but also countered (to survive a little longer!) against the advanced guys.
Requested some extra submissions from mount (all I’ve been taught thus far is kimura). Worked kimura’s, then counters, where you grab around the neck to get towards the back, alternatively moving up the body and getting the legs around the neck (forget the term/move name!) for submission finish.
Then some quality rolls with fellow beginner where I held my own nicely, then duly tapped out multiple times vs advanced opponent whilst also surviving and getting out of a number of comprimising positions.
Worked wrestling predominantly, getting to the back from arm hold/pulls, and also from neck hold postition in close.
Need to keep working the basics, but more good learnings early.
Rolled a few times, countered plenty then they got me in arm bars, etc towared end of rounds.
Rested yest, chiro yest arvo. Found some massively sore spots deep in the lat zone under the armpit, along with bicep tightness on rhs. Would be all linked to shoulder, so another session booked in for next week.
Totally agree mate, it’s been great. Found out there’s 2x morning sessions a week, which work better with work & family routine. So I plan to attend both of those plus maybe 1 beginner evening class.
Then sprinkle in some random gym work inbetween, whilst monitoring recovery. Confident the shoulder will come good, bicep and one of the rotator cuff muscles need some massage/manipulation etc - reckon there’s referred pain from those and the shoulder is likely fine.
Rolled 4x times, the first roll against a fellow beginner. He has a bit bigger frame but my technique and speed are a bit better. Cue trying for the triangle from mount (after setting him up for the kimura - with no intention of actually going for that), getting up onto his shoulder, leg around and under neck, and hey presto - nailed my first triangle with him tapping - with 2 seconds left on the timer @burien_top_team - never forget your first?
Good rolls after, plenty of learnings and humblings from advanced guys.
Worked other triangle variations, including from bottom guard, when oppoent is reaching in over (foot to hip etc), arm bar (more achilles pressure than full lock).
Rolled twice, more pointers from advanced guys on slowing things down when rolling, converse the tank… still tapped out a few times.
This is some of the most valuable training you’ll do. I don’t have many regrets about jiu-jitsu (other than wishing I’d started sooner). But one of them might be training escapes more aggressively earlier. It helps make you more willing to take risks as you improve.
Our club organised an internal comp, where the two schools we run combined for some random matches etc.
A few one on one matches early. Then I was in a 5 vs 5 thereafter. When one person taps they leave and the next person comes straight in. If no submission within 5mins, both people are out and next people in from each side start again.
Unfortunately I didn’t last long, my opponent had a brutal grip (same weight as me), he took the floor straight up. I worked my way in, to an attempt to pin his lower leg with mine, but he was in bottom guard before I knew it. Cue some wrestling trying to break his grip alas no good and his leg went up to my shoulder, and I was in a triangle before I knew what was going on. Tap.
Later on there was a random 16 draw with handicaps for white belts etc, so my first match against a bigger guy meant I needed 1 submission, but he needed 2 to advance to the next round. I worked my defenses well early but his 30kg weight advantage took it’s took. Americana submission on me after a few minutes (hurt my elbow too, felt it click a bit), then > go again with no rest. After a few more minutes in bottom guard he’s managed to crush my upper body with mass. I almost got out a few times. He was totally gassed by this point, and relieved to get me to submit with most of his weight and arm across my neck. Bah… Tap.
Got to witness some great matches thereafter.
Once all the matches were done, we had 5min timer on for more casual rolls. After some tutoring with advanced guys during the rolls (i was looking for the darce choke - poor choice given size difference), but with some teachings, amended it into an anaconda. Tried that a few times then nailed a nice submission against a smaller opponent later on in another roll. Hit a number of different submissions in later rolls, good fun.

-Just getting in some movement today. Elbow still sore from Saturday bjj inhouse comp, but improving daily.
Rolled three times - good rolls again. Starting from side control, bottom guard. Aim is for one to get free, the other to hit a submission, then switch roles.
In the latter roll managed to get out of his comprimising triangle by driving bodyweight into him, rolling him up. A small win and more learnings!
Elbow feeling better daily (phew). Plenty of general sore spots though.
