Rate of Muscle Gain

Interesting. Have you experimented with long duration sets (>2 min sets) yourself or with your athletes/clients for muscle mass?

While I’m pretty new to the game, I got more out of 20 rep breathing squats than I did out of 5x5. I only timed a few sets, but they usually lasted around 3 to 3.5 minutes. More out of it = more mass gain.

At this point I don’t know of any better tool… but that could just be because of inexperience.

Not really. I do density work where the goal is to get as many reps as possible in a certain time frame (e.g. 5, 8 or 10 minutes), but 75-85% is used so normally we do micro-sets of 3-5 reps with very short rest intervals.

I did this with front squats and chin-ups for a month. It seemed to have a better effect on my legs than my chin-up muscles. In fact, my quads “grew” an inch during that month. I really enjoyed it and I hate doing leg work.

If I recall correcty, there was a US Olympic speed skater named Eric Hayden–or Hyden, not sure which is correct–who had massive Tom Platz-type thighs. I remeber that part of his training was squating for ten minutes with 225 pounds. He is now a sports medicine doctor somewhere in California. He won several gold medals in speed skating in either the 1980 or 1984 Winter Olympics.

Thanks Chris. I actually have done a lot of Density work over the years and it is very effective. Very enjoyable way to train too.
