A divorce won’t change her being your grandaughter, so yes you will have her forever.

However, many people who are racist, and I’m talking white people, don’t even realize it. They have rationalized blame on the victim such that it is no longer racism but instead some type of twisted justice.

I would agree with this but it includes more than just white people. There are racists from all racial backgrounds that don’t realize it. The problem is that it is accepted from some racial groups and not from others. And it’s not an issue of who has power and who doesn’t because it has nothing to do with what race has the largest population. If you as white guy apply for a job at a black owned business and don’t get the job just because of your skin color or racial background, THAT IS RACIAL DISCRIMINATION!

Dude, what planet do you live on? Are you trying to be funny or are you just a dumb ass?

How the hell is it possible to tailor a society to the whims of every racial group that happens to show up on its shores? Implying that anyone coming to a country different from there country of origin should not have to fit into the mainstream society is idiotic. In order to function, societies have to design their laws, process, and infrastructure to fit the majority of people. And they are not going to change that for a minority of people. And you are an idiota for implying they would.

This again leads to the rationalization that minorities deserve what they get as some type of justice because they refuse to fit in good enough, refuse to work hard enough, refuse to take enough responsibility, whatever. This is precisely the battered wife analogy.[/quote]

No, minorities need to do what everyone else does. We need to work as hard and fit in just as well as everyone else. No more, no less.

Lorisco,

I don’t understand your deep need to keep bringing up the fact, which nobody has disagreed with, that there is such as thing as discrimination in other directions.

You lack of understanding of power in society and the moderation of the influence, in the big picture, that discrimination has on society is simply amazing.

Anyway, you also miss the point with respect to fitting in. Again you bring up inane commercial issues… which have nothing to do with the discussion at all. We aren’t talking marketing and the fact that minority interests aren’t catered to by businesses.

If you want to fit in, then of course, you need to conform, and you need to conform enough to actually be qualified for the work environment you apply for, but you don’t have to conform to anything beyond that.

That’s the beauty of living in a free country, most things are choices.

I just read this essay.

I thought that it revealed a lot while showing how pervasive and insidious racism is.

Some key words : Ursula Le Guin, Science fiction, Marketing, Racism…

Ok, sounds like we agree on conforming to the business/work worlds requirements. So what other conformity are you referring to in terms of minorities and the majority? Give me some examples so I know what you are talking about.

you guys have to be kidding me…Who cares what is what…cant you just look at the other guy as a person? Thats what i try my hardest to do. To me…whether the definitions of bigotry and racism are different…they are still negative to me. And ignorance isnt something that should be tolerated. Hate is somewhat ok when directed at injustice. But hate is not ok when its irrational…like hatred of a whole race. Hatred of a person can be tolerable.
