Rapid-Onset Gender Dysphoria in Adolescents and Young Adults

Commenting to stay along for the ride. I’ve known a few trans through out my life, which means very little to me, they surprise act like regular people, but this upcoming generation seems to be a gender confused dumpster fire.

It is long, but did anyone read it? Any thoughts? Any parents notice more gender dysphoria among school kids?

Hi lucasmon. Yes, I read the study.

And to answer your question, yes. Some schools are seeing this phenomenon of several kids in a high school or college friend group all deciding that they are TG together. Three high school girls who are all friends, and all in the brass section of the high school band. It seems very, very unlikely that they are all TG. That has every indication of a kind of contagion effect going on where some kids want to fit into an LGBT peer group.

Have you seen what has happened since the Brown study was published?

Search for Brown University Censors Gender Dysporia Study

As I understand it, the TG advocates want to see unequivocal and unquestioning support of any young person. And the reasoning is that the incidence of any LGBTQ identification has been historically under reported, so people are now more comfortable coming forward. Of course, there could certainly be truth to that.

However, I have a big problem with the idea that to question a rapid onset/ a group of peers coming out together as TG on the part of concerned parents is a sign of parental transphobia. I find that very disturbing. I looked at some of the LGBT activist groups and they will say there “is no such thing.”

There is more to say, particularly about college-age females identifying as lesbian, queer, or bi. It’s well known that some women are much more flexible in terms of orientation, and that some impressionable young women are more likely to identify themselves in one of these categories if they have a lot of college-age friends or mentors who are involved in gender studies, identify as queer, etc…

given the likelihood of diagnosis in girls is .002% to .003% (2 to 3 in 1000) I’d say if not all of those girls, then 2 of the 3, are just young and confused.

It is disturbing that there are (fringe) groups (with loud voices and powerful backing) who push for unquestioning support. It’s disgusting and irresponsible.

To clarify my last thoughts above.

I understand that Evergreen University has about 40% of it’s students identifying as LGBTQ. Of course I think that’s partially a self-selecting group. If you’re gay or trans, you might want to go somewhere where there are other people who relate.

I believe it’s Brown that has the unofficial motto, “Queer within a year, or your money back.” Of course, more LGBTQ students are likely to want to go to Brown.

BUT - Yeah, this isn’t news to anyone. Some adolescents and young adults are very, very impressionable. Something like 17% of women have some inclination toward same sex attraction. And in some peer groups or gender studies classes, your young person is likely to be asked “How do you know you’re not bi?” “Have you kissed a girl?” Maybe you’ll like it, and if you do you’re bi!" Or perhaps get into a friend group where all the girls are shaving their heads, putting a bunch of metal in their faces, and identifying as queer feminists. I know that’s a stereotype but a lot of us have seen this. Yes, peer pressure is a real thing.

We’re going to see a lot more people identifying as Q. Hey, I’m a fem hetero astrogender (like a star!!) who likes to lift weights, that’s a traditionally masculine thing so I’m now Queer, or I don’t fit into a gender binary! How special is that? Now I can be a bit more cool and interesting with all the gender studies chicks who I look up to and want to hang with. Erg…

It’s also a bit strange to hear how the LGBTQ advocacy rhetoric has changed. It has been assumed that gender identity is very fixed, and is very difficult to change which is why therapy for TG persons to stay the gender of their biological sex, has become less popular. It’s not considered a mental illness under new guidelines, and it likely can’t be changed with therapy, so we’re going to need to support transition. Surgery, hormones.

For the person who has felt TG since childhood, maybe. Has always felt that their biology doesn’t match their neurology if you will, always identified as the opposite gender, or from a very early age. OK. That’s not a rapid onset.

Now, the advocates are telling us that gender identity is very fluid from one day to the next and that gender identity and sexual orientation change and flow over the lifespan. This idea that gender identity is very flexible is new.

Any day now you could realize that you’re TG female, or gay.

Reminds me of the nutrition “experts” who can’t make up their damn minds on how they feel about eggs. Are they or aren’t they healthy dammit!!?!?

Very, very funny.

Holy shit, we’re having a rough enough time with the transition from super nice daycare to hard-knocks kindergarten (even little kids are just fucking horrible now), with the Lord of the Flies afterschool care program. Great to know I can worry about this later on too, what a nice day and age to raise kids.

Your math is wrong, and I’m only pointing it out because I’m not sure which one is supposed to be correct.

I think 2 or 3 in a thousand is an awful fucking lot, while 2 or 3 out of 100,000 (IE .002% or .003% or 20-30 per million) seems more likely.

I am glad I’m not living in the Middle Ages, thanks for the amazing perspective.

Edit: wait never mind, I’d put the plague on par with Facebook, so it’s a tie.

You’re right … mine is .2% … 2 to 3 in 100,000 would give us .002% to .003% … thanks for making me feel stoopid

@polo77j and @Steel_Nation and math.

This article says that .7% of Americans between ages 18-24 now consider themselves TG.

I believe this number was also cited by an endocrinologist from Boston University in a PBS series on TG, called TG in America, but I’m not sure if he was talking about people in that age range, or talking about young people with some kind of G Dysphoria.

This article talks about the Brown study, and also about how the idea of Rapid Onset Gender Dysphoria (ROGD) seems to disproportionately impact girls.

Fwiw

A story re: gender dysphoria

There was a girl at my primary school, knew her from kindergarten to year 6, was a little tomboy-ish but still wore full girl clothes
Was a little bit of an outcast, was super nice but she was very much an outcast, and her “personality” showed it. Had plenty of friends, but was never quite… right?
Fast forward to high school, and you could tell as years went on that something wasn’t right with her, frequently skipped school, but no one knew what was up.
We all liked her, wasn’t bullied etc.
The last year of high school, she just left.
Completely vanished, we assumed maybe she moved until senior school started, and “she” came back as a “he”
He fronted up, and said his entire lift as a “she”, that it was never right
From being old enough to not feel comfortable (he said he noticed at around 7 that he never felt like a girl, and always wanted to be a boy)
He was a completely different person, such a confident person who was obviously right in his skin now he had become a FtM trans, surgery and all

I get that, it was obviously inbedded into the developing brain that he never felt right as a she.
He was still my friend after the sex change, and still to this day is a friend of mine and I completely respect that sometimes anatomy isn’t always right, and it’s up to the select individual to decide in due time

I’ve also known someone who was a normal functioning boy whom had no previous incklings to be trans or gay, who went to a phsyciatrist after having some mental demons regarding home life, who tried to convince him because he had “daddy issues” that he was either trans or gay, and forcefully encouraged him to come out (when he wasn’t and even told the doctor he wasnt)

Your first example makes sense - these instances exist and I wouldn’t disrespect someone who goes through this.

My issue is with making this trendy. I’d imagine it’s really not fun, or cool, to be afflicted with this gender dysphoria and it seems that the spike might stem from the “normalization” of the phenomenon. It’s not normal. It will never be normal. That doesn’t mean these individuals should be ostracized - but it shouldn’t be encouraged for otherwise normal human beings. It will be destructive to those who are not legitimately affected by the dysphoria.

Thanks for sharing and illustrating the two cases.

@anon96032531, great post. Thanks for sharing those. TG individuals exist, and deserve our respect.

I’ll just leave these two things here as resources for anyone who has a child, younger sibling, or student who seems to have gender identity issues.

The philosophy behind this is changing really rapidly, so I’m trying to keep up. I continue to find a lot of the new discussion about gender incoherent, and circular.

Anecdotally, I’m seeing more therapists (including lesbian therapists) in another forum I participate in with people in my field, who are very concerned with this issue in young adolescents.

They had a situation in the UK with twelve young adolescent women at the same school who all came out as TG. Anyone who works in a high school is about to see a lot more of this as some vulnerable kids find “support” on the internet, many of them with body image issues, anxiety, autism, or kids who aren’t yet comfortable with their sexual orientation.

Some nice examples of the confusion in adolescents here, and a great resource for parents. She had a lot of experience with support of LGBTQ kids, and is reasonable about this new gender situation.

More academics have come out and condemned Brown University for censoring, pulling down the research article posted in the OP.
