Ranzo Training log

Man I tell you. We had three guys including myslef who all had a fight in October. Shit was awesome until after the fight. Everyone “took a break”. May be different for me because I never actually got in the cage but nobody even had injuries or anything they were all submission wins or losses.

I am going to start trying some boxing just got to get my schedule figured out. I do like my gym for the most part but it can be hit or miss sometimes. This weekend I will be going to a two day seminar so that should feed my desires for a bit. Hopefully I can retain a few things from it and work with some people in my weight class. Seems I either get a fat ass or a twig.

I will train tonight for sure and I will post it in my logs.

Ok so for all my bitching and whining last night proved to be one of the best nights of training ever. We had John Renken teaching class. I got there early to do some training before the regular class started. John showed up about 10min after I got there and started working with us MMA folks. Really all I can say is Holy Shit I want to train with him every day, not even joking. I really think that regular classes and the bullshit I been doing is never going to satisfy me again. His ability to look at you move and see what is wrong and how to make you better is awesome.

I also discussed with him about some of the boxing vs. mma discussion we have here on the board. In particular my stance and bobbing and weaving. Got some real time demonstration of what works and why. Did some great Judo stuff and takedowns to submissions as well. Training with a real fighter for about 4 hours was simply awesome. There were a number of pics and some video taken. When I get the links I will post them.

Well It has been a hot minute since I posted a log. Life has been coming fast the last week or so. I was hoping to have some videos from the John Renken deal but they all turned out to be total wastes of time so that is out. Can never depend on other people to have any sort of idea of what the hell they are doing.

I did attend a Two day seminar for MMA with several good coaches. Covered a ton of stuff from basic to advanced but the classes were focused on Muay Thai techniques, Jiu jitsu, submission grappling(jiu jitsu in my mind) Boxing. The grapping stuff focused more on takedown/clinch style situations than acual rolling on the ground.

The camp was great and I got to meat our Own Melvin Smiley and we partnered up for the first day. Feel like a made a good friend and hopefully we can be a resource for each other as well.
The first day went pretty well and I feel like I have retained something from each area and have implemented some of it to my game pretty well. Second day I had a horrible partner though. the dude seemed to not give a flying fuck about fighting at all yet had a “know it all” attitude. I really would like to get in the cage with that guy! Didn’t know how to hold focus mitts, bounced around during standup like he was on a dang pogo stick. Doing a takedown defense he would barely even go for the leg, making it hard to work on the defense.
Despite all of that there was some good learning there.

After that weekend I had to do my round on the late shift at work and was just way behind on so many things I have not made it to train at all in the school. I did finish out my 5/3/1 and will be starting up again with some bigger weights.

I’ve got like 5 pages of notes from the seminar if you want to review them. Joel Gingery is one of the most underrated coaches around IMO, I really like the stuff we did Sunday afternoon.

I liked that class too, apparently there are plenty of people who don’t like him around here though. I have videos of that session too. Im gonna put it on you tube. I will link it up for you.

Sorry Have just not had any time to post lately, which corresponds pretty good with my training. The School has been on a wierd schedule due to some remodeling and getting new mats as well. Have had a couple good sessions but mostly just lifting and trying to keep my cardio by road work.

I hit some PR’s in the gym though and was pretty exciting. I think the rest from holiday helped out quite a bit on that. Maybe I have been overtraining, or I am just finally getting old…

Be back in on Saturday for some good stuff and back hard on Monday again. As if anyone REALLY cares.

You’re accountable. People may not ‘care’ whether you’ve been to the gym or not, but you have shown your seriousness, posted videos, and been a valuable contributor - your return is that people will follow your progress, and take the time to offer advice and input where appropriate. Any prospect of some fights this year?

Didn’t have a whole lot to add.

Fight prep is out of my lane.

If you need cheering up, try this video. I thought it was awesome, of course I should probably be under supervision.

Otherwise, I second what London wrote.

Regards,

Robert A

Yep. We may not be saying much now, but if you start half assing we’re all gonna bust your balls.

So think about that, pal.

(Just kidding.)

(Kinda.)

Thanks for the support guys. It is not all my fault. Renovations at the school and the holidays put a damper on several days. Im back to the grind now. Was in the gym this morning.

overhead press day felt good in the gym and I am heading to jiu jitsu tonight. I really need to spar for a number of reasons but mostly because I want to smash somebody.

As far as a fight prospect. Nothing right now probably a little later on in the year. My weight is back up about 185 ish depending on the day. Not too hard to loose that though I will just have to see what plays out.

Finally got a good night training last night. Got there early there was a “kickboxing” or heavy bag class going on so I jumped in on that for a few minutes for a warm up. Then worked on some shadow boxing and footwork while the other MMA guys were doing some drill sets. I was the odd man out so I did my own thing for a few.

Muay Thai. Our coach has been off an on for a while now but seems he is back pretty steady now.

worked on lots of kicks and reaction kicks if that is a term. Basically countering with a kick from a perry and working punch kick comobos from that. Lots of different options with combos especially if somebody throws you a lazy low kick. We did about 4 different sets working back and forth 10-15 times each.
Sparring for 20 min. 2 3min rounds and switching partners 9 rounds total.

After Muay Thai moved straight into some more fight prep for mma doing a cardio drill but working ground and pound skills. Each person does 9 2min. rounds in the defense from the ground fighting a fresh body every round. This is absoulute murder by the 4th round you really start to not give a shit and you want to hurt the other guy badly so he will leave you alone. Anything goes but limited power on punches except there were a few busted lips and noses last night as it went on. By the 9th round you just are happy for it to be over so you can suck wind and sip water.

Was pretty much lifeless after that but did some light rolling and position work and called it a night. Today my back hurts and my nose is still wearing glove marks and scratches on my body. I feel really good though getting in some bad ass stuff and training like a warrior.

Are you still training or…

Update, or I will post another video.

I realize that a threat may rub you the wrong way. Doesn’t matter. Sometimes the right thing to do is buckle.

Robert A

Robert,

I am training. Just not posting been too lazy er umm too busy to keep track of it and post it lately.

I have been given the great fortune of teaching Krav Maga at my school on Monday nights level 1 and 2 so after that I go and continue on with my normal training but the time is cut down greatly on that day. Also I can’t lie There has been a special someone come into my life and really has cut into my training.

seems though I am training about 3 days a week and have cut out the weights for a little while at least because I simply do not have the time.

Rough outline looks like this

Monday 6:30- 8:30 Krav class
8:30- 9:45~10 ish MMA

Wednesday MMA Striking wrestling and sparring

Thursday MMA and Gi jiu jitsu.

Saturday Depending on schedule normally 4-5 rounds of shadow boxing and working on heavy bag.

Things are starting to normalise for me again and I post up some training soon but righ not I am been beaten by a pussy.

Ranzo,

Those are excellent reasons not to post in this log.

I am glad you are doing well.

Regards,

Robert A

I appreciate that, but it doesn’t have to cut into your training. We could train together even.

Wait, what…?

dude why you telling everybody I know my jiu jitsu rubs you the “right” way but damn…

Monday Feb. 4th.

Again teaching Krav Maga level 1 and 2 early in the evening. This has been a challenge and a blessing in some ways. Teaching cuts into the time I could be doing what I want to do which is working MMA stuff but I really do love Krav and it is a great way to teach striking, aggression and get some good conditioning.

I am struggling being the instructor, I do know the techniques but coming up with drills and organising students to make it all work is hard for me. I guess experience is the teacher here. This day went well we did straight punches and focused on the almighty Jab combined with advancing and retreating. Went from that to doing hammerfists in all directions. Blah blah blah its a level one Krav most people punch like crap, cant kick and have no cardio etc. I like it because I can stress the importance of technique and how Krav builds on itslef and one technique leads to another and eventually you learn to fight based on what the opponent presents to you. Some schools stress aggression and being wild but we all know if you agressively come in with your head up and hands down somebody will clean your plow.

I finished the 2nd class a bit early because there was not a lot of students and I went to the back and worked some ground fighting with strikes etc. then went right into no gi jiu jitsu working on escapes from side mount and mainitaning contorl from the bottom. Had a couple good rolls and called it a night.

Teaching basics can help your own game too, it’s good to get back to basic basic fundamentals. Sometimes when I’m slumping I’ll help out with some of the kids classes at our gym, seems to get me going again.

Back to training pretty good now. Life has settled down somewhat.

Taught Monday had a great level 1 class. Students are soft and most left after level they can’t handle the workout and i don’t allow nasty technique.

Worked on some No gi Jiu jitsu stuff after teaching since I was warmed up already. Had a good roll with one guy we quit after 15 miunutes nobody tapped but I did maintain some good positioning and my gurad felt real strong.

Tuesday 2/19/13

Got to the gym and did 3 x 3 round of shadow boxing/ kicking putting a lot of focus on my footwork and movement.

Heavy bag. Worked power shots and power combos with hands and feet. I lost count on the kicks but tried to keep the kicks as high as possible because I kick like a little bitch to the head and I need to work on that aspect.

Did some pull ups 3 sets of 10, situps and shadowed some more. Took a small break and put on Bas Ruttens Muay thai bag workout and did Three rounds of that.

Teamed up with some other guys and did light sparring with takedowns and ground work. 3 rounds total of sparring. Then headed over and got in some Gi jitsu. Rolled three different people tapped the first guy with an armbar got the second in a mounted triangle and I tapped on the third when he got my back with a choke.

I like it better when I can hit the other guy in the face and I hate wearing that Gi. I will say that Gi makes me more technical because those fuckers are always holding a damn sleeve or something and it makes it hard to pass guard sometimes. Felt great to be doing my own stuff in the gym and working on being stronger and tougher. Will be heading back tonight hopefully and Thursday for sure. Got Three guys with fights coming up and we gotta work.
