Coach John,
I am in an odd place. I am 20 years old, and for the past two years I played D3 football. This WInter/Spring I became seriously depressed and bi polar, and as a result, I was asked to leave school. I now am on groovy meds and more stable. I used your one-lift-a-day program to regain much of my strength lost due to my lethargy.
Well, to get to the point, I find myself with a lot of time on my hands, and NO FOOTBALL TO TRAIN FOR! This is the first time in six years I won’t be doing what I love this summer and fall.
Well, to get to the point, I want to do something athletic. I used to throw the disc and shot back in high school. Now, I am a decently strong, short, fat dude (265 power clean for reps, 405 dead, 405 squat, and press numbers so bad im not going to type them @ a bw of 240 lbs.) However, in High School, I was the worst thrower. Well, not the worst, but I was never good enough in my opinion (around 122" disc, 42" shot) and I didn’t do field senior year but ran instead to get faster for college ball. Now, I never had a throws coach, and I know for a fact that my technique was terrible. I didn’t spin for the disc, and my “glide” was more of a jump. Anyway, I am thinking of taking up throwing to fill in the void left by football. Any advice on how to learn proper technique without a coach?
Thank you for all the inspiring words and simple but HARD programs. I’m a big fan. BTW, you left the Bay Area for UTAH?! Two years in MN weather drove me nuts.
For years, I did the O lifts only and never had the problem and I was damn strong. Then, since it worked so well, I went in another direction! So, yes, the O lifts will do it, but Front Squat…

You know, a few years ago, I would argue with you, but I have seen too many “big” squatters with “big” bellies. I was fine until I started pushing big squats. Pavel T agrees with me on this, too…just an observation.
Caveat: when I say “Big Squat,” I mean over 600+. Don’t think a 135 half squat will do it…
How would you get around this problem? Do heavy deadlifts have the same effect? Basically I want the best of both worlds- super strong and lean stomach

Call 1-800-456-SHOT and ask for the shot and discus videos…I taught myself and then mentors simply appeared…

I don’t mean to hijack this but have you considered playing rugby?
It is an awesome sport and you will meet a lot of great people.

DJ: I have always used 3/4 bodyweight as the first big lift…or 175 pounds…

I’m not nearly as experienced at this stuff as many of these guys, but I just did a full bodyweight powerclean at 190lbs last week. What am I most likely doing wrong that makes it easier to do? (Did that make sense?) I wouldn’t have expected to do well on something I hadn’t tried before, so I’m thinking I must be doing something different from a true power clean.
